Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

Thanks all, it is such a relief, I kept reading on here about peoples DCs with multiple offers and I know that unis have till May but it's hard not to worry isn't it so really pleased she has one offer before Christmas

PhotoDad · 13/12/2022 18:07

Your regular update from a teacher who helps with UCAS; the applicants in my "bunch," all of whom submitted at least two weeks ago, range from five offers to none at the moment. This is perfectly normal although very annoying. Offers will resume in January and really pick up after then. Please don't panic! ( <- large friendly letters)

DinkyDaisy · 13/12/2022 18:09

My ds has 2 offers, Bath and York. Course he really likes is Surrey (lower grades to his predicted but likes course)... Nothing from them yet....
Bath is a consideration as well...

Neversaygoodbye · 13/12/2022 20:04

Well 3 weeks on and we"re still waiting for college to submit. Very frustrating as some friends who submitted after DD have already had theirs submitted to UCAS snd received offers back. Unfortunately DD won't chase.

Travelban · 14/12/2022 19:00

Manchester cancelled dad's interview today and will reschedule in the new year. I don't think we will hear back from ucl now so I think this is it for us in 2022!!

blametheparents · 14/12/2022 19:55

DD got offers today for her two least favourite options! Typical! But, it’s a start!

OriginalFlake · 14/12/2022 19:56

@PhotoDad thanks for the reassurance, that’s pretty much the breakdown in DD’s school too.

Can anyone explain contextual offers. DD has one and we’re not sure why.

PhotoDad · 14/12/2022 20:05

@OriginalFlake The two most common triggers for contextual offers are school performance at GCSE/A-level, and postcode (used to check what fraction of people go on to HE). But different unis use different thresholds and combinations!

The most common "postcode" measure is called POLAR4 if you want to google.

OriginalFlake · 14/12/2022 20:19

My guess is postcode then, it 100% won’t be the school performance. Thanks for clarifying @PhotoDad .

My eldest got a contextual offer even though we weren't in a polar 4 postcode and the school performance was good, it turned out that a large part of the catchment area was one with a low take up of university places and so the school was on the contextual offer list.

OriginalFlake · 14/12/2022 20:47

@Riverpebble thats interesting. Just checked and we are a polar 4 postcode, I find this puzzling too. Is it just the one contextual offer you have?

Yes, it was just the one. She's graduated now - last year.

Thingshavechanged · 15/12/2022 11:57

I'd like to join - long time lurker. DD predicted 3 x A* 1 X A (History, Econ, Maths & FM), although I think that's ambitious. Excellent GCSEs, but obviously TAGs. Applying for History at Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Durham, Leeds and Bristol. Very late with PS - should be submitted before Christmas hopefully. Good luck to everyone. Hoping for some offers in the new year...

Era · 15/12/2022 13:57

To be honest three of those are late responders anyway so it doesn’t really matter if you submit later. St Andrews, Durham and Edinburgh like to make it difficult for students

NotDonna · 15/12/2022 18:42

What course is your DS looking at @DinkyDaisy?

DinkyDaisy · 15/12/2022 18:54

BSc Politics at Surrey and Politics and IR at the others. He was impressed by the Surrey course, approach, placement year and campus. Felt a more applied approach than some courses and more contact time.
He will go to offer days on Bath (offer) and Surrey if offered. He will keep eye on others.

DinkyDaisy · 15/12/2022 19:10

@NotDonna
Sorry just flagging previous message.

HappySonHappyMum · 15/12/2022 19:26

Can anyone offer some advice please. My DD got a grade based offer from her first choice Uni which has ignored the existence of her EPQ - which they had previously emailed they would consider. My DD emailed to ask why the EPQ has not been included and has had a reply saying that if she misses her grades slightly then they would 'definitely include her EPQ if necessary'. They have offered to add this to her offer. She has acquired a pending A* for her EPQ - does anyone think it is a good idea to get them to amend the offer. My DD thinks yes - but will this disadvantage her come results day?

NotDonna · 15/12/2022 19:35

I’m not sure I fully I understand @HappySonHappyMum - does the uni website say they reduce the offer with an EPQ as not everywhere does?

NotDonna · 15/12/2022 19:41

If they’ve said they’ll lower her offer now then absolutely take them up on that. For example it’d be AAA or AAB plus A*EPQ - she has to get one or the other. They offer both if that makes sense.

NotDonna · 15/12/2022 19:46

If Bath and York have offered then I’m sure Surrey will. It is a lovely campus. And he’s very sensible looking at the course detail and choosing one he really wants.

HappySonHappyMum · 15/12/2022 19:47

@NotDonna They don't say on their website whether they reduce offers with an EPQ but my DD emailed before she applied and they said they were 'happy to take tariff points from an EPQ'. Of course her grade offer ignores her EPQs existence so I think their offer to add this is a good thing I think🤔

NotDonna · 15/12/2022 20:27

I would agree and think it’s definitely worth your DD saying yes please to their offer of an offer that includes the EPQ. Is it grades or tariff points on their website/literature/offer?

HappySonHappyMum · 15/12/2022 20:51

@NotDonna On their website it gives both grades and points - it's the only offer she's had that specifies grades not points so it threw her a bit.

Chickydoo · 15/12/2022 21:48

2nd offer in
York economics AAB
Lower than DC predictions, however, I think there is a more realistic chance of getting these grades.
Predictions AA A* (A star x 2 A x1)
Very happy
2,down 3 to go
