How often do you speak to and/or your university student

Do you mean how often do you speak to your university student child?

If so I have spoken to ds twice since he left 5 weeks ago! I text him about three times a week and he usually responds eventually but he’s not a big fan of talking on the phone and neither am I. I’m really looking forward to seeing him in a couple of weeks though as he’s coming home for the weekend for his brothers birthday.

Male. Every day by text. Sometimes it's a "where in Tesco is X" - he knows I've never been in his Tesco so is continually amazed I know. Mostly it's pictures of food he's cooked.

I rang him once or twice a week. Won't hear much of him if I don't call unless he need something.

I have 2 daughters at uni.

DD21 rings every other day or so when she is walking home in the dark, just for the company. She is studying abroad for a year, so I won't see her till Xmas.

Dd20 does not ring, but will WhatsApp every 2 or 3 days, she comes home every 3 or 4 weeks.

When she bothers, never answers her phone. Not spoken to her for 5 weeks but she's texted for stuff to be sent once and that she's coming home this weekend

Speak? Hardly ever (dd and dd)

But I text/ WhatsApp a few times a week and generally get a response

Male. We message on Snapchat every day, and he sends me random pics. He video calls if something exciting is happening (like picked for the starting team at footy)

DD - we Snapchat many times a day, so no different from when she was here, and FaceTime 1-3 times a week.

Mainly it's him asking me questions like what's the password for or how do I cook this!

Every day, several times, but via WA rather than actual calling.

DS once in a blue moon ,only really if he wants something
DD ,she phones a few times a week
I don’t phone them as I don’t want to annoy them
I text them if I see anything that might interest/amuse them
They apparently speak to each other often

Male in his second year. Video call every week at set time with us his parents and his younger brother. During the week contact is daily or every other day, all sorts of random shares of information, some important, some trivial. We keep him in the loop with things happening here so he feels involved. Usually done via messaging but will speak if something is lengthy. Video call is him telling us about his week.

We are close as a family anyway so this amount of contact was sort of expected.

Went on to look for Christmas present ideas and came off feeling like the worst parent ever!

DD- daily, although usually whats' app versus speaking on the phone although chat every few days.

DS 1&2-less, much more sporadic and more needs based. DS2 also had a lot of ill heath and lots of messaging about that. He rarely phoned-once when he was hit by a car on his bike and once from A&E so the phone ringing was always nerve wracking!

Dd - video call every couple of weeks but message daily.

DS - second year. Texts every other day or so and calls about once a week - more if he needs to know how to cook/clean/find something. Pretty sure I'm more in contact with him than my other DS who is still at home being antisocial in his room all the time! I fully expect never to hear from DS2 when he goes to uni - unless he needs something. 🙄

Female, 2nd year. Chat about once a week, family WhatsApp most days.
She's often on facetime to her sister, which makes me happy.

What’s WIWIKAU?

2 female. Every day. I message them both in the morning to say hello. They both ring at some stage during the day for varying amounts of time. Today DD2 was out walking so she rang and chatted for 40 mins. Yesterday she rang on her way from one building to another for 1 minute. The both text daily, it could be anything from how to cook something to telling me about an exam. They both facetime the dog every week. They and their siblings are in touch daily. They both come home most weekends

DS - everyday. We have a family WA group with me, DH and all 4 adult and teen DCs and he’ll respond or start convos with comments on Tik Toks, current affairs, etc.

Speak every 2-3 days via WA so I can see him and nag him to tidy his room! Home this weekend and home for a weekend a few weeks ago.

What I wish I knew about university? What was it about?

1st year female, I rang twice a week for the first few weeks, now aiming for once a week, several chatty texts a week. I judged it a bit by responsiveness - less seems to elicit a warmer response.
