Update with the DD1. She was employed for the summer by primark, but he waned to extend the contract to Christmas if she could as first term was more quieter than second term, and they have said yes. So shes continuing working there for a bit. Shes hoping to apply for a Phd in the northwest area, but would consider moving further afield if the phd is the right one. Her masters thesis is going pretty well. She has to do the literature review by the first couple of weeks of first term, so shes been doing a lot of reading and typing.
We went to visit Lancaster with DH and DD2 to see DD1, and the bank holiday weather held off from the rain. We stayed at a place called the lodge near a placed called Hest Bank and it was really nice. Took both DD to Blackpool for the day. DD2 went on the rollercoasters with her dad, DD1 went to Ripleys believe or not with me and it was a lot of fun. Then a walk on the seafront and the chippy.
Got some bits in Lancaster for DD2 uni haul.
Just preparing for when DD2 going away 2 weeks tomorrow, then DD1 comes back to ours 22nd of September when shes got a gap between housing contracts, and then back again 30th of September where she will be in uni owned accommodation in the city.
Hope everyone is having either nice relaxing time off, or settled in new jobs, ready for 4th year :)

Frenchyq25 great news

DD has ‘graduation’ on Wednesday but two of her modules are still unmarked due to the strike. She is so stressed as she has applied to teach in South Korea and can’t without her degree. She is still working her supermarket job but there isn’t much overtime.

she had a solo holiday to Barcelona which did her good.

sammyjoanne · 04/09/2023 21:19

@aibutohavethisusername Oh wow I hope she gets the marks soon, and what an opportunity, South Korea.

@sammyjoanne thank you, graduation was a special day and DD has now received her grade of 2:1. Very proud Mum.

sammyjoanne · 10/09/2023 16:02

@aibutohavethisusername thats fantastic well done to your DD :) still awaiting at the moment. UCU have said on twitter marking boycott has ended, but DD said they still have to do the marking, so sh dont think she will hear for a couple of weeks yet.

@Daisysway looks gorgeous :) would love to go there soon .

Dropped DD2 at Reading. Shes settled in well and socialising with lots of people. got drunk first two nights, so tonight its bingo at her halls and no alcohol lol. had a few dramas with email set ups, a lost phone (was in her room but couldnt find it when i rang it lol), app not giving verification email, her job interview(campus job) being moved to accomodate a welcome talk, lol the drama and a few tears from her. Not missing home, only the cat lol.
DD1 will be back on saturday night after her contract ends with summer accommodation Bowland halls. Then its a week with us and back on the 30th to move into Chancellors wharf in the city.

sammyjoanne · 05/10/2023 17:08

Update from the one above. DD2 is now home from Reading. Made lots of friends but got homesick when she was on her own in her room and would be crying herself to sleep every night and again in the morning when she woke up. shes now back home, applying locally for next year and is taking a gap year and has a job in tescos until christmas so she gets some work experience behind her.
DD1 has now mived into Chancellors wharf accommodation in Lancaster for her final year. She gets her missing 3 module results by the 31st of October. Lectures start next week, so shes gettting all the hours in this week from Primark, and then will just go back to the 8 hours at the weekend again. Meeting the boyfriend this weekend (DD1's) on facetime, so will see how that goes :)

@sammyjoanne sorry to hear dd2 didn't settle but sounds like she has a great plan in place . Being away at uni isn't for everyone and brave of her to admit she wasn't happy.
Ds gone back for third year into the most hideous house I've seen, bathrooms and kitchen ok but bedrooms full of mould. They all phoned the agent the day they moved in and there's been a flurry of activity from contractors which is encouraging. Freshers week This week so lots of partying then hopefully settling down to actually doing some work !

sammyjoanne · 05/10/2023 17:34

@specialted oh wow I hope they get the mould sorted for your DS, having the contractors in already is a good thing. And freshers, its always still good to get the freebies even if not a first year lol. DD's room is smaller than some of the other chancellors rooms, but its enough to store everything just about. Moving in was a bit of a challenge as everyone all turned up at once. First drop off was ok, but getting the things from armadillo storage and the stuff her friend was holding for her, parking was a nightmare. People on double yellows, some parking at Aldi across the way. She has got a balcony so thats nice for her :)

Hope everyone is doing alright :) Specialted hope the mould issue got sorted for your DS.
Update on couple of fronts. DD2 applied to NTU and Derby. she got an offer at NTU, and wants to study there. We went on the open day and the campus has lots of animals so its pretty hands on, so she loves that. And its 40 mins on a bus to notts city centre and then 20 on a tram so she can come back at the weekends to see us which breaks up the week so she wont feel so homesick. Shes got a job until christmas at Tesco so thats good shes got some work experience as she did not get chance at sixth form.
DD1 got her 3 modules after the marking boycott. She ended up with a 2:1, just. so she knows what shes got to do to keep that. She is applying for phds, and spoken to the supervisor and they have said they feel she can still get one and because she did so well in flavour physics exam, and also her internships on DUNE/Fermilab it will help if she applies to that side of physics. Shes looking at Lancaster, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and Birmingham and got a post grad open day at manchester on the 15th november.
Shes still working at primark Sat morn, Sun afternoon, and shes seeing her boyfriend in Manchester Wednesday evening, and he visits her Saturday evening. And she sees her friends on a Monday for an hour at the pub and Thursday at her friends house. Rest of the time shes working on problem sheets and her masters project.
I hope everyone is doing well, and settled in their jobs/masters/year 3/work abroads :)

I'm glad everything is going ok with DD1 & 2 @sammyjoanne . All ok here, thankfully ds got mould sorted and room was repainted which was a good result. He seems really happy in his house in town, and has joined the gym in town rather than the uni one, it's more expensive but open 24h which suits him better. I think he's suddenly realised how much work there is to do in year 3 but hopefully it's all under control! I can't believe it's his final year !

sammyjoanne · 09/11/2023 19:26

@specialted same, the 4 years have gone so fast. In the summer when moving her into her uni temporary accommodation ( was bowland) we watched her year for Grizedale graduate for faculty of science and technology and it was quite emotional seeing 3 of her townhouse flatmates graduate getting their bsc. One her friends wore a kilt. We also went to Grizedale college for drinks and they did a superb job of setting the place up with balloons, flowers, a marquee and they had a jazz band. And the 2 for 1 cocktails of course 😀It was lovely they made a really nice effort for them. Hopefully if your DS faculty is on the same day we might see each other in the college bar 😀Ill probably be a mess though from all the proud mum crying lol

I can't allow myself to get excited about graduation yet! I feel like I'd be tempting fate!! Confused

Daisysway · 10/11/2023 00:30

So pleased that both your Dds have their future plans sorted @sammyjoanne .

@specialted ...I think year three comes as a shock to the system!

My dd is enjoying her Masters she had imposter syndrome when she started her first module (full of older GPs and Consultants) but she's found the lectures much more engaging and delivered really well (interesting). She found one of the group exercises interesting and said it was a bit like the Apprentice with a few individuals wanting to be top dog - passive aggressive !

She's away at the moment, on a long weekend in Rome with a friend, but seems on top of her work and she's managing her Anxiety really well (definitely more confident)...I think she's looking for a career in the civil service - public health.

choirmumoftwo · 10/11/2023 09:45

Really pleased to hear how everyone is getting on.
It's an interesting point about how teaching is delivered. DD is responding much better to the teaching style on her grad scheme (Big4 accountancy) and consequently is really enjoying the learning, despite having to work much harder than she ever did for her degree! Obviously the salary helps 😂😂

sammyjoanne · 08/01/2024 22:54

Hi happy new year everyone :) hope everyone is enjoying their masters/Gradschemes/ and final years.
DD1 came back for 10 days then spent new years with her boyfriend who lives west manchester. She had a really light first term module wise, so shes been cracking on with her masters project and is not far off getting all the data in now. But this term shes got a full on timetable so shes glad shes got most of it out of the way. Phd wise shes just about finished the applications, ready for submission end of this week. Shes narrowed it down to to Manchester Liverpool Lancaster and Sheffield. She hopes to get Manchester. Its close to her b/f, its also one train ride to us as well. At the end of this year theres only going to be couple of 3rd year friends and a phd friend left in Lancaster. Everyone else is now moving on to London, going home, or further education elsewhere after this year.
For phd its a bit of a minefield, some are offering ready made projects with funding, other unis dont even advertise and its just a case of reaching out to the right people and if theres a possible position, then she has to wait until April or before to see if the uni will get funding for the project.
DD2, she worked in Tesco until Boxing day. it was only a seasonal job, but shes looking for something before she starts uni in september. She saw her b/f and his family for new years as well n Cardiff. So, it was just me and hubby watching tv on new years.
Hope everyone had a nice Christmas with the family and you all had a lovely time x

Nice to hear all your news @sammyjoanne , glad everyone is doing ok. Ds not gone back to uni yet, he's going back on Monday as wanted to have a solid week at home focussing on his dissertation and he finds he has a lot less distractions at home! He's still not sure what he wants to do when he finishes, he says for now he's just concentrating on getting the best degree he can and will think about that later. I'm sure it'll all work out in the end! Hope everyone is doing ok!

sammyjoanne · 20/01/2024 09:35

@specialted. thats nice your DS had stayed at home. It was only a short one for dd as chancellors is quiet to study there. We are going to Lancaster 2 weeks today to meet the b/f. We have chatted on FaceTime but not met him in person yet.Manchester application gone in, took 4 hours and 13 pages lol . hope everyone is ok 👍

OP posts:
Daisysway · 20/01/2024 18:58

Nice to hear how everyone is doing my DD finds working at home easier too @specialted ...she went back last Saturday although no lectures until W/c 29th. To be honest the way her Masters Program has gone she would have been better living at home and just finding accomodation for 4 night blocks every 6 weeks but she seems happy enough and has enough friends still at Warwick.

She's just had first marked module back and achieved 72% which she's happy with on what is a difficult module for her (mainly statistics and she doesn't have A level Maths)...she actually achieved 84% in the sole Stats element!

She's been approached by head of course about applying for a 4yr PHD in her ideal area of research so its a bit of a quandary given she hadn't intended to do a PHD.

Would be lovely to hear how everyone else is doing....

aibutohavethisusername · 20/01/2024 20:16

Good to hear everyone’s updates.

dd goes to South Korea for the year on Thursday!

Daisysway · 20/01/2024 20:52

@aibutohavethisusername

Would love to here how she gets on....Im sure if my Dd had the confidence she would love to work in South Korea (she spends too much on Kpop)
