@aibutohavethisusername wow I really hopes she enjoys south korea. what amazing place to be :) Please let us know how she gets on :) DD would love to go to Japan as they do a a few projects there for a few months, so would love to hear how your daughter finds it.

@Daisysway Phd is pretty awesome. If you can get one in the ideal area of research and get the funding is most definitely worth doing. DD's applied and shes got 3 dream catagories that she would be happy with. Theres plenty of topics shes ruled out so if she gets something shes not happy with or not get anything at all, shes going to get work and apply again next year, or check out find a phd.com as some can drop in during the year. She needs funding provided by the uni, or the STFC as no way she or we can afford to do it. Its really nice that your DD head of dept has approached her about it. They obviously feel that she will do really well in it.

DD had interview at Manchester uni last week and shes got a fully funded phd position at NEXT project in neutrino physics today. Shes accepted and is looking at accommodation, not cheap thats for sure.
She will be going to the south of the pyranees for data collection for 1-2 weeks at a time every 6 months or so and also doing 5 hours per week teaching others at the uni, as well as some outreach programmes. its for 4 years so she will be 27 when she finishes, but shes chuffed and were all chuffed. After a rottten second year and her crying on the phone from her results, to get a first in 3rd year and average a 2:1 and on track for 2:1 for year 4, shes worked her socks off.
She will be only train ride away from her lancaster friends, and 10 mins away from her boyfriend (shes doing halls for this year). Excited is an understatement.

DD2 boyfriend is moving in with her and they have a student studio in nottingham. He has course at notts college (they will be both 19 when they start in September) and DD2 will be at NTU, and shes got a part time job at greggs in the city so that will also help money wise. Its a year b/f g/f anniversary today. Shame hes working, (hes from Cardiff) but will be here in 10 days time to house sit with DD2 whilst we go on hols.

Hope everyone is doing great :)

Thanks @specialted .She didnt want to get her hopes up after what happened with Oxford 4 years ago (she got to interviews). So when I asked her how it went, she just said ok I think, so shes very happy to have gotten a place. Shes looking at accommodation there at private halls. Super expensive. like £200 a week for an ensuite per week, much more than Lancaster.

A little update on my two both of whom graduate this summer. Exeter DD will be starting an internship at a church on the South Coast with the aim eventually of being ordained priest. York DD is applying for nursing jobs. She'd like to do prison nursing for a while and eventually move into community nursing with an emphasis on palliative case. I seem to have produced two very caring young people.

sammyjoanne · 16/04/2024 23:23

@Empra123
Wow thats amazing, very much worthwhile jobs, you must be very proud :) To go into jobs helping people its lovely 😁 Its very strange now as a lot of peoples YP have left here as they graduated with a bsc last year, so it has been quiet. So its really nice to hear how everyone is getting on still. Not much to report really on my two DD. One is revising for 4th year exams and the youngest is doing part time work during her gap year before she starts in september.

Good to hear what DC are up to. Ds swamped with coursework and has just finished dissertation. He chose modules that are assessed by coursework over exams so he'll only have one final exam in June . He's secured a grad scheme in a food production company starting in sept, so he's looking forward to a summer of fun before that. He'll be so sad to leave Lancaster as he's just loved it there .

sammyjoanne · 18/04/2024 23:16

@specialted thats so nice hes got himself a grad job, you must be chuffed to bits hes set up. And wow 1 exam thats great. Is he still going to be local to you, or is he going somewhere new?
DD has masters project which is 40% due in two weeks, a computer module which was also coursework based, and 5 exams. Shes home tomorrow to spend time with us at the weekend. DH and my birthday and his anniversary so were going out for a meal. Then shes back at Lancaster revising and finishing her work. No more lessons now, but has to do a presentation in June. She will also miss Lancaster. She does have some friends staying there still so she will go back on occasion. If she gets the grades for Manchester she will be there, but if not, then she will still be west of Manchester to be close to her boyfriend and get a job in data analysis or coding she thinks as a back up plan.

Good to hear everyone's news. Dd is still enjoying her grad scheme although the exams are getting tougher! She's enjoying life here but does miss Lancaster and has been back every six weeks or so to visit friends. She's also looking to buy a house if she can find time to do any viewings. Now that's a really scary thought Smile

sammyjoanne · 21/04/2024 22:42

@choirmumoftwo House buying wow thats amazing :) DD has a boyfriend who shes been seeing since August 2023, so she will be closer by being in Manchester and hes is to the west on the outskirts, but its too soon for this September; so they might get themselves a place renting together the following year. I hope your DD exams go well, and go well for anyone else who has exams this year. x

DD's finished her degree 😀She finished her exams a while ago, but still had to do a presentation with a poster and her VIVA infront of a panel this week. She was pretty emotional and so was I. I love Lancaster and its been a brilliant uni. She went out with friends to one of the college bars, then yesterday met up with her boyfriend (he lives in west manchester), and today they plan to go to the Sandcastle swimming, tube slides etc at Blackpool.
As she plans to stay in Manchester any way (phd or job wise depending on grades), his mum has said she can stay with them over the summer, so over the coming week or two she plans to start bringing her things to them and just leave the bare essentials in Lancaster until she graduates. She will be visiting Lancaster to see friends who are staying up there a bit longer. The week after graduation she will be moving out.
I hope everyone is doing well and your DC, do we say Dear Graduates now lol, are doing great 😀

Nice to hear an update on your dd @sammyjoanne and its great that she's enjoyed her time at Lancaster.

My dd is just one month into her dissertation (I think it needs to be handed in the end of August). She's enjoying her Masters and been fortunate enough to be offered some research temping work at Warwick with nice pay 20.00...its a bit of a juggling act because i believe there's 100Hrs of work that needs to be completed by the end of June...but money is very much welcomed and the work will look good on her CV.

No other plans at the moment other than tentatively looking at opportunities she's decided against a PHD.

sammyjoanne · 16/06/2024 10:08

@Daisysway Thats good news shes got a research temping job. And glad shes loving Warwick and her Masters 🙂And to get in the extra cash is a huge help for any plans she may have for after her degree :)

DD is very bored at the moment. Until shes got the results end of June, early July shes not sure where she will be. Shes making use of the uni library to try and do some outreach information to keep her going.
Its either going to be one of two scenarios. A) get the 2:1, gradually moving bits out to her boyfriends and his mums, finally moving out of Lancaster 28th of July (contract finishes) and staying with them until 3rd of September where shes got accommodation at Grafton street round the corner from Manchester uni and does phd. Or B) She gets a 2:2, still moves out of Lancaster on the 28th of July to her b/f and mums, but starts looking for a permanent job where she plans to rent a 1 bed apartment/Studio in Manchester. As much as his mum is lovely to offer, she doesn't want to out stay her welcome.

OP posts:
Daisysway · 16/06/2024 10:20

@sammyjoanne did she finish year 3 with a 2:1? Crossing fingers for the right result i always look at these situations as what happens is meant to be and it will work out. Maybe worth having a look at Unitemps to see if there is any summer work available in her given field...Dds temp work was offered to her by her dissertation supervisor but its via unitemps and there's lots of well paid research jobs on the site.

bluebolt · 16/06/2024 10:42

@sammyjoanne my dd is the same, it was easier for DS as he was in the top 2 bracket so had his graduate scheme in place before he even finished, but for DD there is so much difference in the 2:1 2:2 grades she’s in limbo. She has plans for both but it’s a waiting game. Luckily for her only a few week to go now, but is finding it difficult as everyone around her is making or made plans.

sammyjoanne · 16/06/2024 12:29

@Daisysway She did finish 3rd year with a 2:1. Only just though. She had a great 3rd year but rotten 2nd year, so shes on the borderline. She said her exams for year 4 could swing either way. Unitemps thats a good idea, ill pass that on to her :)
@bluebolt Wishing your DD all the best of luck. Its hard being in a situation where it could swing either way, but in the end she will have a degree and look favourable in job hunting :)

Congrats to your dd @sammyjoanne ! Great news! Does that mean she'll secure her PhD? Ds also provisionally has a 2.1, am so happy for him. Now looking forward to graduation and a family holiday straight after. Ds just back from magaluf with house mates, then off on college football trip to 'somewhere in Spain' on Monday. Will be nice to have him home after that. We went to Lancaster to take home some of his stuff the other weekend, I felt abit sad we won't be visiting again after graduation.

Daisysway · 29/06/2024 09:37

Well done to both @sammyjoanne and @specialted Dd/DD....brilliant news.

choirmumoftwo · 29/06/2024 11:21

@specialted I felt exactly the same when we brought Dd home from Lancaster for the last time. She had such a great experience there. It was lovely to go back for graduation and she goes back every 6-8 weeks to see friends.

sammyjoanne · 29/06/2024 13:09

@Daisysway Thanks, hope your DD is enjoying her masters and her job :) @specialted Thats amazing he got the 2.1, fantastic news; and thats lovely hes coming back and you have a holiday together. Does he have any plans for afterwards? It is sad about not being back to Lancaster after graduation. I will really miss the place.

DD has had a boyfriend for the past year now and he lives in west Manchester. If she had or had not got the phd, she would still have lived in Manchester anyway and looked for a job and got a flat there. Theres not much to come back to in our little village in Notts, and when she left in 2020, her sixth form friends all went separate ways. Most of her friends will still be in the north west, so totally understand why she would want to visit @choirmumoftwo . Hope your DD is ok and enjoying her grad scheme and has found herself a place :)

Plans for the summer is that she is going to stay with her boyfriend and his family, so he is with her this weekend and bringing a few boxes back thats she has packed ready to go, just leaving the basics behind for the next 3 weeks. She graduates friday 19th in the morning, and the following day shes going to pack whats left over and she will be heading to live with them for 6 weeks. Then she moves to private student halls early September. We are staying at the Toll house for graduation and going to Morecambe saturday morning. During the summer she is coming back for a few days early August and heading to London to see Brian Cox the science guy with DH.

The Phd shes secured is funded for 4 years and she will be having several trips to northern spain working in a tunnel in the mountains with equipment which can detect these particles. She will be going for a couple of weeks at a time around 3 times a year. Shes hoping this will then lead onto research jobs where particles can be used to make things like clean energy.

Glad DC got the results they needed and doing great and living their best lives, they all deserve it :)

Well done to your dd @sammyjoanne and your ds @specialted

DD is still in South Korea. She went in January and started working in March. She is currently on holiday and is going to JeJu island for a week, my Mum is then going to visit her next month.
