Good luck @QuintanaRoo ...

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 02/08/2023 14:55

@Daisysway sorry to hear your DD didn’t get that masters but I hope she finds something more suitable.

@QuintanaRoo Well done to your DD being the squeaky wheel. She should be proud of herself for helping all her course mates. I hope she gets her first.

DS3 seems to be taking the summer off as he didn’t get a school based job before the schools broke up. (Wants a school based job for a year before starting teacher training.) He can afford it as he lived very simply at uni. I hope he pulls his finger out in September though!

Daisysway · 05/08/2023 08:39

All smiles here, dd received alternative Masters course offer on Friday and we are off to sort accommodation today... Warwick have been amazing.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 05/08/2023 11:32

Ah, that’s good news! A better course for your DD? Congratulations! Was she already at Warwick? My DS1 did his degree there. Most students live in Leamington. (He lived in Coventry, cheaper!)

aibutohavethisusername · 05/08/2023 12:06

Fantastic news! DD still hasn’t got a grade from UCL.

specialted · 05/08/2023 12:20

@Daisysway that's great news!

sammyjoanne · 05/08/2023 13:54

@Daisysway great news :) Warwick too, my DD is considering that an option for her phd next year. the campus looks great, and im sure your DD is going to have a super time :)

the Remark for dds cohorts final module came through. Everyone has been upgraded. The 30 people who failed have now passed and looks like dd has got a 1st overall.

sammyjoanne · 12/08/2023 22:21

@QuintanaRoo thats great news, well done for your DD :)

Great news! Well done to your DD for being persistent as well as getting her deserved result.

specialted · 13/08/2023 17:36

@QuintanaRoo brilliant news!!

Daisysway · 13/08/2023 22:23

@QuintanaRoo Thats super news well done to your Dd and i hope she secures a Masters at Cambridge.

Dd's completely sorted in terms of accommodation at Warwick, selected her modules and booked on the induction day....

Its just so sad that some students don't have their résults yet :-(

sammyjoanne · 13/08/2023 23:06

Glad she sorted @Daisysway at Warwick and got everything done and dusted and ready for the start of the new term. DD busy doing lots of hours at primark at the moment trying to get in the pennies, and working on her literature review for her masters project. Couple of her friends have come back now so shes been seeing them. Still waiting on the 3 unmarked modules. DD2 at the moment waiting on alevel results so will know on Thursday where she will be.

DD missed her final exam so had to take it the day after she graduated. She got her grade this week and she ended up with a 2:2 which means that cannot do the masters she applied for. She has decided that her degree was a waste of time now and she should have done zoology, not marine biology (could have told her that 3 years ago!). So is now frantically looking for a full time job as she's just signed a lease on a flat in the down where her uni was as her boyfriend still has 2 years to go. Trouble is, she's only ever worked in pubs so even getting an employer to consider her with her lack of experience is proving difficult.

mumsneedwine · 15/08/2023 12:28

@Frenchyq25 could she sign up with a temp agency, to get some experience and also see lots of different jobs. Can keep applying for other stuff too.

sammyjoanne · 15/08/2023 23:34

@Frenchyq25 Aww I doubt the degree was a waste of time, with a 2:2 its still a degree and regarded highly. Hopefully she will get a job in the meantime and soon. Maybe she can work with an agency or with her working in pubs continue for a while until something else comes along. Its september and unis starting Im sure they will be needing staff soon.

@Frenchyq25 ...its not been an easy journey for this cohort and my dd stated the same just before results were out ...she felt that she would have wasted 3 yrs plus lots of debt had her final grade been a 2:2.

I had quite a lengthy discussion with my dd, she held her hands up to a lot of mistakes, not just academic but a bad houseshare in Yr2.....I think she had a shock when she was so unprepared for her Yr2 exams. She's exceptionally lucky because she has the opportunity to do a Masters (after initial rejection - this was another lesson).

Don't be too hard on your Dd. After poor Yr2 results and the loss of her gran (shortly after) my dd hit the bottle and was knocking back 2 bottles of wine a night and walking the streets of Leamington at 2am in the morning...(totally out of character)... Losing self esteem and feeling like they have let you down really does affect their mental health....they really do need a shoulder....or in my daughters case a counselor to offload too.

There will be opportunities for your daughter, its a little tougher because she's now got to show drive and passion for what she wants to do and start at a lower point ...

Maybe start with listing down her career aspirations and then start searching for rolls within companies that are in that sector maybe admin jobs to start with and then she can work at showing she's worth more.

sammyjoanne · 17/08/2023 08:45

DD2 got into Reading uni for Zoology today, her firm choice 😀

sammyjoanne · 17/08/2023 19:12

Thanks @specialted she is off out celebrating tonight😀
@Daisysway sorry to hear what happened with your DD. our DD had a bad flat share in year 2 and everything went sour and she got depressed about it and was very lonely, and then someone she was seeing for 4 months split up with her and was all upset about that too. It was not until end of year 2 she met her people and got out of the flatshare and went private halls instead for year 3 which was much better for her. But the damage was done and year 2 grades were not what she hoped for. I just thank the support she had at Lancaster. If it was not for the supervisors and head of department she would have been on a 2:2, so im glad they helped her turn it around. Shes in a much better place now she got her friends. Still a hurdle to go to maintain/improve her year 4 so she can do a phd, but shes in a better space mentally and feels its achievable.

Thank you all....we are just proud that she graduated, she's not had the easiest of 3 years what with COVID/strikes and her own mental health.
The good news is she's got an interview for a job working in a lab in a couple of weeks which seems to have helped her mind set this week, so fingers crossed it goes well!

Daisysway · 18/08/2023 21:22

@Frenchyq25 Thats brilliant news, crossed fingers.

@sammyjoanne well done to your dd2.
I think my dd could write a best seller about her Yr2 houseshare...but in saying this she still has a strong bond with 3 of her housemates the 4th young lady unfortunately was a total selfish individual who caused so much conflict within the house moving drug dealer boyfriends in with gbh history, moving a cat in where 2 housemates were allergic and had severe asthma (one of which was my daughter who was regularly coming down with hives)...the kitchen became a no go area because of maggots etc (my daughter loves to cook). One student could not afford rent in third term and the rental agency were awful threatening letters, adding extortionate interest..(I ended up intervening). Im surprised she just missed her 2:1 in yr 2 because I dont think she was taking anything in...but somewhat annoyed that universties don't seem to ask why a students grade dropped 14 percent in a year.

She's an incredibly thoughtful young adult but unfortunately she's too nice, she paid for all the food for one term for one of her housemates (whose money mgmt was awful). Im hoping the counselling has given her skills that means she values her self worth but she's still avoiding any form of percieved conflict even if it means she loses out or is not happy...but i guess a lot of young adults are the same.

sammyjoanne · 18/08/2023 22:50

@Daisysway wow shes had a lot to deal with, and so glad she worked through it.
Im just glad that third year was such a better year for her and shes found her friends who are such a rock for her :) DD and friends are all part of a great friendship circle, and the amount of support and love they have, shes always got someone who is there for her and vice versa. Its just nice everything fell into place in the end :)

DD had an interview yesterday to get on a trainee teacher course (she had to do a lesson plan and do written tests) . She found out this morning that she has been accepted and starts next Friday, she seems really excited about it, we always joked that she'd end up being a teacher (she's really good with kids and did work experience in a school in year 10).

specialted · 01/09/2023 16:35

@Frenchyq25 that's brilliant news! Congratulations to your dd!
