2023 uni applications for those pursuing art and creative routes

The other thread discussing Uni applications for RG and academic routes isn't so relevant for DS. He's considering Art Foundation year or direct entry to uni for fashion design.

Anyone care to join a thread on similar creative paths. (Not just fashion!)

He's looking at art foundation at Kingston, Central St Martin's, UCA,

For Fashion BA looking at Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, Manchester Met, Nottingham Trent, Liverpool John Moores, Leeds Beckett.

Most seem to accept without art foundation but he would need one to Central St Martin's so if he wants to try for that will need foundation.

Lots of open days coming up and hopefully school will give him some more advice next week. No start on his PS yet!!

@OneFrenchEgg oh that’s interesting. I don’t think she attended a group discussion. They just asked her to email her portfolio. She just sent a power point of her work. Maybe it depends on which course they have chosen. Which subject has your DC applied for?

OneFrenchEgg · 05/02/2023 13:12

@mumma24 illustration (degree not foundation) - was either in person, teams or online

mumma24 · 05/02/2023 13:21

@OneFrenchEgg thats the same as my DD a degree not the foundation. Chose the online option I guess. Will speak to her later when she finished work. I'm hoping they invite her to an applicant/offer day

OneFrenchEgg · 05/02/2023 13:23

Oh maybe, just interesting how different all the processes are. They had it ask me because of getting there etc as they don't drive yet

Soma · 05/02/2023 13:44

Thanks @mumma24 , I think DD's course is at Spike Island, so no where near the main campus or accommodation, but her friends on the main campus rave about Bristol. We've only visited AUB & Hertfordshire and that was for an entirely different creative subject.

Does anyone know how straightforward it would be to swap out Falmouth for somewhere else at this late stage?

TizerorFizz · 05/02/2023 18:27

@Soma Uwe has bus services. It’s not that difficult to get around from studios to halls.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 05/02/2023 18:43

Ds has spent all weekend getting 3 portfolios together. Almost there just some measuring and rephotographing to do. A final Check with tutors and get them up loaded. Which doesn't look all that straightforward.

PhotoDad · 05/02/2023 18:47

I know, because I've helped students with it, that applicants for music conservatoires use a separate system to apply, with different deadlines and options (eg to upload stuff directly). Perhaps art schools should do the same? Probably complicated by the fact that most art schools are part of bigger universities now, whereas conservatoires aren't. Hmmm.

Pourmeanotherwine · 05/02/2023 18:53

@Soma i live near UWE Bower Ashton, it's an easy cycle from the city centre, or you can take one of the many electric VOI scooters for hire. It's near the docks, and also near North street which has nice independent shops and cafes.

@FancyFanny all the Foundation courses we looked at it was based on submitted portfolio with no interview. But Leeds may be different. I checked out Leeds out of interest and did they really only want six images? Sure beats the 35 Kingston asked for! Good luck to your daughter!
I think the art does loose a lot in being presented as a digital image. You can't see the texture or detail or appreciate the scale etc. But if they get 100s of applicants I guess it's impractical.

Yes, they only asked for six images, but dd uploaded 6 PDF slides with multiple images on each page. I've just rechecked the admissions criteria and it appears decisions are made without interviews! Got my fingers crossed because she's so intent on going there she hasn't applied anywhere else yet- the only other option she would be interested in locally would be Manchester.

OneFrenchEgg · 05/02/2023 19:06

Yes, they only asked for six images, but dd uploaded 6 PDF slides with multiple images on each page.

One of dcs asked for around 20 images/slides so they did similar (themed).

Soma · 05/02/2023 20:20

Thanks @TizerorFizz.

Soma · 05/02/2023 20:23

Thanks @Pourmeanotherwine that's good to know. Does anyone know if Marketgate halls is as "bad" as its reputation, or is it all hype?

TizerorFizz · 05/02/2023 22:16

@soma
Its a unite city centre hall. Students tend to like city centre for a reason. What have you heard about it as opposed to other city centre accommodation?

Localher0 · 06/02/2023 07:39

@Soma I 'think' that if you're within 2 weeks of the ucas deadline you can do a swap.... check the ucas page or message them.

Soma · 06/02/2023 08:42

Thanks @Localher0 . @TizerorFizz that it has a disproportionately high drug problem and it's hard to get away from it.

TizerorFizz · 06/02/2023 10:26

@Soma
I think that’s likely to be over stated. Many young people come into contact with others who take drugs. So are you saying they all congregate in this privately run university accommodation so it’s the “drug users” hall? That sounds ott to me. There will be a few doing drugs at any university (probably at school too!) A young person has to accept that. They also have to be strong enough to avoid temptation. There are other halls to choose from, so look at them.

OneFrenchEgg · 06/02/2023 11:07

@Soma have you looked at reviews? We didn't look at Bristol as all the current students I know through older dc at uni refer to it as really bad for drugs (incl those who like to 'party') and it wouldn't be ok for current dc applying.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 08/02/2023 18:38

Has anyone applied to Brighton Uni? DS has had acknowledgment but no portfolio request and we wondered if he should follow it up?
He got his portfolios to UCL and DMU off last night and should get UWE off tomorrow. Such a relief!

mumma24 · 08/02/2023 19:14

I read on a Facebook group ‘what I wish I knew about university - wisikau
someone else was saying they were waiting for Brighton.

mumma24 · 08/02/2023 19:25

@OneFrenchEgg hi 👋 just wondering if your DC has received an offer from NUA yet?

OneFrenchEgg · 08/02/2023 19:26

@mumma24 hi - no they have to attend a portfolio review with I think other students and tutors and submit work during this to discuss. Think this is in a couple of weeks?

mumma24 · 08/02/2023 19:35

@OneFrenchEgg ok I remember you saying now you chose teams option. My DD just sent hers online. I hope it goes well. We’re off to Norwich on Saturday just to have a look round as missed open day

Did she get an offer? Amazing! Dc decided to do the discussion - still waiting on AUB and have a day at UCA coming up.
