2023 uni applications for those pursuing art and creative routes

1000 replies

Duchessofmuchness · 04/09/2022 21:56

The other thread discussing Uni applications for RG and academic routes isn't so relevant for DS. He's considering Art Foundation year or direct entry to uni for fashion design.

Anyone care to join a thread on similar creative paths. (Not just fashion!)

He's looking at art foundation at Kingston, Central St Martin's, UCA,

For Fashion BA looking at Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, Manchester Met, Nottingham Trent, Liverpool John Moores, Leeds Beckett.

Most seem to accept without art foundation but he would need one to Central St Martin's so if he wants to try for that will need foundation.

Lots of open days coming up and hopefully school will give him some more advice next week. No start on his PS yet!!

Has anyone visited UWE Bristol or Bath Spa, if so, what did you and your DC think?

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 02/02/2023 21:14

DS off to library to bang out his last contextual study before he has to submit his most recent 2 units for assessment tomorrow (both 5 week projects). Printed his last etchings only this morning.
Then a weekend refining his portfolio as he has to get 3 off by Weds, and UWE also requires a piece of writing he still has to do...
Still not heard from Brighton Uni or Leeds Uni with portfolio requests! But guess they might follow!
He is a v busy boy. He'll be glad when his portfolios are off and he can concentrate on his final major foundation project which starts after his assessment week next week.

mondaytosunday · 02/02/2023 23:51

OMG @Lottsbiffandsmudge! Ditto here! First application (to Foundation at Kingston) went off yesterday though the hyperlink to Dropbox and her animation reel didn't turn blue... no one answering the Foundation office phone either.
Her A level first unit was due on Tuesday and it's not that she left it all last minute but that everything took so much longer than anticipated! Her art teacher couldn't have been less helpful. I think the other applications will be a doddle. But it's like she didn't have any other A levels this past week - back with a bump and work has stacked up for them too. So much stress!

ziggy50 · 03/02/2023 00:06

Did anyone apply to MMU graphics BA? If so has a portfolio request been made yet? Wondering if my DD may have missed an email for this. Thanks.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 03/02/2023 07:21

@ziggy50 not applied this year but DS applied for Foundation at MMU last year and they were vv slow at everything.

OneFrenchEgg · 03/02/2023 16:21

Sounds like Kingston is on a lot of lists!

So far we have to still submit portfolio to AUB, should do this weekend

Applicant day booked for UCA

Informal review booked for NUA

No others applied for

They all want different things - think the challenge is to get it all ready within the same timeframe.

OneFrenchEgg · 03/02/2023 16:22

I say we, obviously dc is doing it I'm just keeping a calendar so I can remind/check up if need be/ drive them places!

TJworried · 03/02/2023 20:51

Dd just received an Unconditional for Heriot Watt to study Interior Design.

PhotoDad · 03/02/2023 21:43

Congrats to DC receiving offers! Exciting times!

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 03/02/2023 21:54

Great news!

FancyFanny · 03/02/2023 23:44

Hi, Ive skimmed through the thread, and couldn't see anyone else applying for Foundation at Leeds Arts. My DD has just submitted her portfolio- last minute before the deadline! Does anyone now if they're likely to interview- I got the impression at open day that offers were made on application and portfolios alone, but her Are teacher was sure they would interview her?

mondaytosunday · 04/02/2023 09:29

@FancyFanny all the Foundation courses we looked at it was based on submitted portfolio with no interview. But Leeds may be different. I checked out Leeds out of interest and did they really only want six images? Sure beats the 35 Kingston asked for! Good luck to your daughter!
I think the art does loose a lot in being presented as a digital image. You can't see the texture or detail or appreciate the scale etc. But if they get 100s of applicants I guess it's impractical.

PerkyBlinder · 04/02/2023 11:14

@mondaytosunday - the seeming lack of rigour/interest in the application process is what put my DD off Leeds. They were the first to offer a place and it made her wonder if they give an offer to everyone who just completes the application process. She got the request for a portfolio the day after they received the application. She threw together six images and sent them in and got the offer a week later.

But then maybe other places other than the very few competitive courses such as UAL, Kingston, etc send out offers to almost everyone too but just get students to jump through more work intensive hoops to give the idea of a rigorous process! Who knows! 🤷🏻‍♀️😬

My DD has applied for photography at MMU and got a portfolio request about a week or so after submitting her application and sent her portfolio in before Christmas but nothing since. She’s still waiting on LCC too.

Meanwhile she’s booked an offer holder day for NTU as has an unconditional from them and she really liked the course and vibe of the city. She’s got an interview with Falmouth and has an offer from Leeds but that’s no longer on her shortlist.

PerkyBlinder · 04/02/2023 11:37

When I say waiting on LCC, I mean she had request for portfolio about a week after submitting her application, sent her portfolio off through Pebblepad and is waiting to hear. It was a bit of a last minute choice because she had originally discounted London as too expensive and just not a great student experience but then saw their commercial photography course which is just starting this year and looks incredible but her application isn’t purely tailored to commercial and she’s straight from a levels so we’ll see…

She’s taking a gap year so if she really loves that course and doesn’t get an offer, she can always apply next year with more work - she’s planning on building her filming and film editing skills on her year out as her photography skills should transfer to that and her thinking is very sequential plus her interest is in story making/narrative and all commercial work is moving so much to moving image so that seems a good avenue to explore. All the photography courses she looked at include moving image as well as stills work.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to do offer holder days for all courses if offers take a while for arts courses?

Dc is going to an offer holder day but hasn't accepted the offer if that makes sense? Has accepted the day but still waiting (just submitted portfolio elsewhere) on others.

PhotoDad · 04/02/2023 18:08

Speaking with my schoolteacher-who-does-UCAS hat: the universities should time things so that there's an offer-holder day between when they issue the offers, and when the DC has to decide. But you can certainly go before you've made your final decision on Firm and Insurance!

Picking up on a point upthread... DD also decided not to pursue the one place which gave her an offer without looking at her portfolio. And, in fact, went to offer-holder day after she had already accepted, but she'd missed the Open Days due to Covid and then a clash.

OneFrenchEgg · 04/02/2023 19:10

Well we had a mild panic - dc prepared portfolio on school software on personal device and then found sharing was restricted to internal only!
Luckily they sorted it but that was a bit of a stressy 30 mins

luluposs · 04/02/2023 19:15

Hello all, been lurking a while although was an early adopter on this thread started by @Duchessofmuchness ! Thought it time to check in with an update, it's been crazy busy over here!

Daughter is in the thick of it right now with 2 down, 6 to go of her applications to both degree courses and foundations, all to begin this year, all in London, which is the only place (other than New York! If we'd stayed in the US she'd be applying to Parsons and FIT!) she wants to be. Which at least made it "easier" (?) when it came to narrowing down choices: no Farnham or Brighton or Manchester for us!

She's applied through UCAS to 5 BA courses, 4 in Fashion Design (Kingston, her top choice, LCF/ UAL, Ravensbourne & London Met) and one Design (Goldsmiths). She's also applying to 3 Foundations: Kingston (again top choice), CSM/ UAL and Ravensbourne.

She was advised it was going to be super stressy to try to do all of the above at the same time as completing A level coursework (Spoiler: IT IS, arggghhh, not just for her!!), but she wanted to throw her hat in all the rings as is undecided about FAD (everyone always advises it, but she is pretty certain she'd rather just get stuck right into a degree and due to the school she is at and the A levels she's doing she is covering a lot of ground already). Also although she'd get free FAD tuition as she's under 19, we can't get a maintenance loan and as we don't live in London we just don't think we can afford that option without some sort of scholarship or bursary.

It's been a bear of a month, only a couple of her year group are doing two coursework based creative A levels and their 60% project deadline was last Tues, day before the KSA FAD deadline (WHY did they want only 300 word PS when everyone else is 500 and requires practically entirely re writing!), and 2 days before LCF wanted her portfolio. She has had to get an extension on the A level c/w to Monday and is at school right now (Sat, it's a boarding school) finishing up her art project which will be 60% of her final grade. They then get 8 weeks to work on the timed exam condition part of the A level worth 40% of both fashion and art (she has to do them in the same week), so it should get easier for her as the months go by. She's been ill in between all this and super stressed, but at least focused and described it as "productive stress"! I do think she's forgotten about the geography mind you, and hasn't finished her independent study worth 20% yet....argh.

Right now, she's going to try and get the portfolios in for Kingston BA (her top choice, if she gets this she'll do it) and London Met BA (they already made her a low conditional offer so I think portfolio is a formality, not sure the fact the offer came the day after she submitted her UCAS form instills much confidence in them, but still nice to get a quick offer!) done this week before half term, and possibly CSM and Raves FADs too as the deadlines for those come right after half term.

She has an online interview booked with Raves BA Fashion for early March and she's still waiting to hear from Goldsmiths as to whether they want a portfolio. She didn't put the UCAS in until Jan 21st on advice of her teachers to give them time to gather all their materials, which was smart.

I wasn't even allowed to look at her UCAS form, but glad I insisted as there were a couple of minor issues (she was born and raised in the USA but been here just long enough to qualify for home fees and had input dates wrong so I caught that!) and haven;t asked to see anything to do with her portfolios at all so have been intrigued reading how much all of you seem to know about what your kids are putting into theirs! The other night she did show me briefly her London College of Fashion portfolio at least!

My big worry is London accom costs and availability at the moment -- her top choice of Kingston at least has halls, which is what she (and I) really want for her, but pretty much all the others with the exception of Goldsmiths (as a Univ of London/ UCL grad myself I am secretly gunning for this one!) don't have their own halls, and as we live down near the south coast she won't be commuting. Also trying to wrap my head around student loans as we're gonna need aaaaaall of those!

Anyway apols for the mega long post, but just saying hello and good luck to all your offspring - it's not for the faint of heart this creative application biz is it? I mean, she looks across at her peers applying to standard Unis to do biology or english with their one UCAS form, no portfolios, offers coming in already and nothing super important to do until May exams...but hey, no denying her passion!

Any thoughts on the above most welcome. I seem to remember @mondaytosunday saying something cautionary about London Met? Anyone have insight into Ravensbourne BA Fashion or Goldsmiths Design BA?

mondaytosunday · 04/02/2023 19:56

@luluposs only that when it was discussed upthread about dropouts on courses, I looked it up and London Met had the highest percentage (I think in the country!) drop out in the first year (degree courses). But the fact they offered a place without seeing a portfolio would make me think that the quality of students would be extremely variable and not particularly high.
Agree with you re Kingston deadline almost simultaneous with A level coursework deadline seems cruel! And my daughter really struggled with the 300 word limit - she couldn't add in about her extra work that she included in her extra but if the portfolio. Do you know how much the art essay is worth?
We were very impressed with the fashion at Ravensbourne when we went to the open day - far better than what was on show at the show at UAL.

mumma24 · 05/02/2023 09:36

Just updating you all.
after having a face to face interview at Portsmouth uni to share her portfolio DD has received unconditional offer from them to study illustration which is great she also received wonderful feedback on her portfolio from Norwich arts Uni after submitted it online. They have given her a conditional offer of BBB but We still haven’t had to chance to visit Norwich. We only attended the online event. So hard to know what to do. We missed open day so will only be able to drive up and have a feel for the city. Any advice appreciated

mumma24 · 05/02/2023 09:45

@Soma we only visited UWE but unfortunately not on an open day. Bristol is lovely but the only thing our DD didn’t like was the fact that the Bower Ashton art building (where she would study illustration) was on the edge of the city and around a 45 min walk to city centre and all the first year accommodation.

OneFrenchEgg · 05/02/2023 10:28

@mumma24 NUA have asked for a group discussion session for dc - about ten of them and submit a couple of pieces. Which option did yours do, dc has chosen teams as best option for them?

PhotoDad · 05/02/2023 11:35

@mumma24 Just pottering around a city for a day can give a really good feel for the atmosphere, and it's definitely worth doing! DD had NUA on her shortlist and would doubtless have been happy there (it was her second choice) but ended up going to first choice. Good luck!

mumma24 · 05/02/2023 13:07

Thank you @PhotoDad I think we will visit, will be 7 hour round trip in the car though but it’s worth it
