2023 uni applications for those pursuing art and creative routes

1000 replies

Duchessofmuchness · 04/09/2022 21:56

The other thread discussing Uni applications for RG and academic routes isn't so relevant for DS. He's considering Art Foundation year or direct entry to uni for fashion design.

Anyone care to join a thread on similar creative paths. (Not just fashion!)

He's looking at art foundation at Kingston, Central St Martin's, UCA,

For Fashion BA looking at Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, Manchester Met, Nottingham Trent, Liverpool John Moores, Leeds Beckett.

Most seem to accept without art foundation but he would need one to Central St Martin's so if he wants to try for that will need foundation.

Lots of open days coming up and hopefully school will give him some more advice next week. No start on his PS yet!!

@mondaytosunday just managed to lose a long message I typed out to you.
Shorter version, we're going to UWE Bristol tomorrow, so anything you or your DD would like to know, let me know. Also anything you want to know about AUB, Herts, UCA & Falmouth, just ask. We were surprised at the large number of Year 12s at Falmouth when we were there recently, it seems as if they combined the offer holders day with a general open day.
You may already know, but The Student Room is excellent for information about animation, two users in particular, PQ and Moid (doesn't seem to be active now), is or was a lecturer at Herts.
(3) Arts university bournemouth or Edinburgh University for animation? - The Student Room scroll down for Moid's comments about 2D animation at AUB.
(3) good animation universities with integrated foundation year? - The Student Room

CSM foundation offers out! It's funny, I was just catching up with my daughter on the sofa & asking if she'd heard anything yet as I'd predicted they'd send out by end of this week (again, she's not interested in attending anymore having decided to go straight for a BA in Fashion Design, but one of her pals at school is absolutely set on CSM and they'd just been discussing it today. He hasn't done UCAS so has rather put all this eggs in the FAD basket / and only really wants CSM!).

I totally agree with what's been said - she got a terrible feel for the place at the CSM foundation open day. Really chaotic and poor facilities not to mention horribly oversubscribed. 500 students in one cohort! @mondaytosunday I'm sure your daughter will be so much happier at Morley!

PhotoDad · 29/04/2023 07:28

I would always opt for smaller courses myself, and DD was the same when making her choice! She knows all her tutors really well (and vice vesra), which is lovely.

I got a little carried away starting a new thread with an info-dump of what I wish I had known when we started out on this path. Please feel free to chip in!

Would probably help if I didn't cut off the link one character too early...

@luluposs nothing from UAL Camberwell still 😫. Think she's fairly set on accepting Morley but it would have been nice to have a choice. Do NOT understand the delay! Anyway I've already posted on the new thread - see y'all over there!

PhotoDad · 29/04/2023 09:10

@mondaytosunday Oof, it really doesn't say good things about the organisation of a course when they can't get offers out! And thanks for joining in on the new thread.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 29/04/2023 18:50

Been at UWE offer holders day today and safe to say we really liked it! What did you think @Soma ?
The Fine Art guys seemed amazing, great facilities, good industry links, v positive students. The studio space at Spike Island is shared with 70 prof artist's studios and a renowned art gallery. Workshops at Bower Ashton were good, print was incredible and even bettee than DMU that we didnt think was possible!.
80 per year in Fine Art which seems like a good size.
Some logistics issues with commuting between accom in city centre, Spike Island for studio and Bower Ashton for workshops means a bike is a necessity!
Good bus links to Frenchay Campus for his extra curricular sport and music.
Think DS will firm it.

PhotoDad · 29/04/2023 19:36

That sounds really positive, @Lottsbiffandsmudge!

DD is writing a CV and putting together a portfolio website right now, to apply for some freelance opportunities over the summer. It's unlikely she'll get through as a student, but the experience is a good one and so why not?

Localher0 · 30/04/2023 01:21

@Lottsbiffandsmudge that sounds brilliantly positive. It's a really good for them to feel it's such a good fit. Just wanted to say my DS is at Bristol and they all use scooters as it's so hilly 😳. He took a bike with him but it was never used in 2 years!

Pourmeanotherwine · 30/04/2023 10:13

It's pretty flat from city centre to Bower Ashton, I live near Bower Ashton and cycle daily. Though you need a really good D lock to leave a bike in central Bristol, I wouldn't bring an expensive bike. The scooters aren't bad, if you avoid potholes and cobbles.

Localher0 · 30/04/2023 10:33

@Pourmeanotherwine Thanks -your local knowledge is much better than mine. Maybe DS is just a lazy git too 😬

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 30/04/2023 12:13

Thanks guys. Cheap ebay bike with a D Lock it is! The accomdation issue is a big one (not enough for all 1st years) so we need to really be on it on app day and beyond. Honestly it's the first art school he has really gelled with. I am glad commuting and accomodation aren't ideal as it stops it being 'too' perfect!

I'm guessing quite a few of our dcs must be gearing up for Art A level exam over the next week or two? Dd is downstairs doing practice pieces.

Oh Yes! My dd has hers this week over wed/thurs/fri. I'm not convinced what she's planning shows her skills to the full but it's not something she's open to discussing. She takes any questions as a personal affront- never asks for advice, never says, "what do you think mum?" Fingers crossed it goes well! I'm dreading it more than she is!

mondaytosunday · 30/04/2023 14:50

A level Art exam starts on Tuesday for my daughter. Just ordered graphite transfer paper off Amazon and we were at Hobbycraft this morning for a few bits. She's painting on wood which the art teacher cut last week (to incorrect dimensions of course)!
Good luck everyone!

Acinonyx2 · 30/04/2023 16:16

@purfectpuss that's because we know nothing of course! About anything - not just art.

Similarly - I'm not 100% about this particular piece - just hope it does the job in the end. Went to the art supplies shop yesterday. Exam Wed-Fri here too.

Pourmeanotherwine · 30/04/2023 16:56

DD is about to firm Falmouth. Then figure out which accommodation to go for. Undecided whether to stay in Falmouth or Penryn for first year. Looks like they put their preferences in order, then there is a ballot in early June.

mondaytosunday · 30/04/2023 18:44

Ah now @Pourmeanotherwine I have just had a nice chat with a lad at Exeter - but as may not know some of the courses are actually at Penryn, which is where he is studying History and International Politics. He said got to live where your course is - though it's only 20 minutes bus between there and Falmouth it's a pain if you have to do it every day, sometimes a few times a day!
He says the accommodation is good (snd he was at boarding school so not used to roughing it). He is in a flat with ( think) 7 others, en suite with shared kitchen. He didn't go for catered but says anyone can eat at the dining halls if they want to on an ad hoc basis. He is enjoying it (the living there, obviously his actual course is irrelevant), and knows a fair few art students now.
I imagine second year they are on their own in terms of accommodation? Then your daughter could move as she'll know the area much better.

Pourmeanotherwine · 30/04/2023 19:18

@mondaytosunday thanks. DD course is at Falmouth rather than Penryn, but there is much more accommodation and a bigger campus at Penryn.
The Falmouth option are 1 cheap one which has some bad reviews online ( issues with damp etc) and 2 expensive ones. I'm inclined to suggest the cheaper of the 2 expensive ones as first choice, and one of the Penryn ones as second.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 01/05/2023 10:36

DS has firmed UWE. I am very excited for him. Just bought out hobbycraft of self adhesive velcro for mounting his foundation final major project. He spent all yesterday writing and editing his 1500 word critical appraisal (it was over 800 words too long!) This time next week he will be done except for the exhibition week which they all have to do shifts at. I think DS is intending to be there all the time!
Looking forward to a long restful summer!

Duchessofmuchness · 01/05/2023 10:46

Art and textiles exams for DS on Thursday and Friday this week.

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed about it all this weekend and staying out of his way. Seems that he's pretty much run out of time to sort out his course work sketchbook book - he still hasn't put the annotations and descriptions of his thoughts and process. Told me at one point over weekend that he wasn't going to. Now says he will. He has just over a week. School have warned him the impact this will have in his grades. I feel so sad for him as he's not lazy and he's talented. I just don't know what he's thinking - possibly it's a combination of limitations on his executive function, ADHD, Dyslexia. Comes across as stubbornness and self destruction.

@PhotoDad - thanks for setting up the other thread. Some fantastic info on there.

Shall I set up a 2023 continuation one for us all too? Been so great to have all your support through the process and still got a few more months to go to Sept! I can try do a round up of destinations and choices as suggested by @Soma if interested

Great idea!

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 01/05/2023 11:22

@Duchessofmuchness that sounds tough. Pls remember that grades are not really ever an issue applying to art courses (somw require grades but not many). And there is never much writing in a portfolio! It's just hoops they have to jump through for A level. On FAD they have to journal as they go (in a separate note book) which is really scribbled thoughts, to do lists, www, etc. DS has not annotated a single sketch book whilst on foundation!

purfectpuss · 01/05/2023 11:32

My dd is very stressed about the exam- she's gone down with an awful virus and feeling very unwell. Hopefully she'll start to feel better soon for the exam on Wedsday- but not feeling well enough for her prep and other revion hanging over her too she's not good.

Does anyone know what happens if they are too unwell to attend the exam- can schools roll it over to the following week or are they tied to the date they set?

PhotoDad · 01/05/2023 12:13

I'd love to join another thread continuing this one, @Duchessofmuchness! The A-level annotations are box-ticking, and the grade won't make a difference to offers, but I hope he can get something done. DD in first year has had to do minimal annotations (nothing like A-level) and also write a couple of essays.
