Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Offers are in for some, others on waiting lists, others doing their A levels and planning a gap year.

Best of luck everyone for great results on 18th August, we will be here to celebrate, commiserate, advise and generally support you for the last stage of the 2022 journey. 🍀

@kackle thank you. Are they for this year? So kind.

Thethingswedoforlove · 21/06/2022 10:40

By that i obv meant the cutoffs applied to those selected for 2022 entry?

olafolaf · 21/06/2022 10:59

DD (rejected from Liverpool after interview) received an email yesterday suggesting some places may become available during the confirmation period and asking if she is still interested. Hopefully others will have received similar- suggests potential for further places opening up?

mumsneedwine · 21/06/2022 12:03

@kackle if they void it I expect every school that uses AQA to change syllabus next year. It would be so unfair on the majority of students as it makes every mark lost on the other papers worth so much more. And this could be their best paper.
They need to investigate, with police, and prosecute where necessary. It's been done before.

Thats v true. My dc said the paper was decent if you had revised for it

BabbleBee · 21/06/2022 13:43

Thank you @Monkey2001 for the link on the last thread to this one.

DD sat the AQA Chemistry paper yesterday and is obviously very concerned. She hadn’t heard anything about the leak until yesterday afternoon which is when the news (rumour?!) seemed to take off on social media.

She emailed her chem tutor yesterday, got a reply this morning and has been told that college is preparing TAGs for chemistry alone. Has anyone else heard of this happening? Or know what the implications are for uni? DD has firmed York, insured Keele.

Mollymalone225 · 21/06/2022 13:48

wow. that's great

kackle · 21/06/2022 16:21

Ours are also preparing for TAG grades for chemistry

BabbleBee · 21/06/2022 17:15

kackle · 21/06/2022 16:21

Does that give them fair representation in comparison to OCR candidates?

mumsneedwine · 21/06/2022 17:18

No TAGs being done here. Not heard anything about that at all (& I'm a chemistry teacher). I'm not doing them ! I refuse - exam board need to sort this out, not teachers. Otherwise they are all getting A stars 😊.

Are you AQA? What a mess with no fair solution! It sounds like the leak might have been quite extensive and there is talk of the 3rd paper being leaked too.

Not sure whether enyone has seen this. I presume the story is covered in other papers, too:

mumsneedwine · 22/06/2022 09:37

@Monkey2001 yes, we are AQA. Thinking we won't be from next year !

mumsneedwine · 22/06/2022 09:40

@NoNotHimTheOtherOne they need to sort out the number if F1 positions for existing students in the system first. Still some final year students gave no idea where they are starting work in August. No point having students ego don't have a job after 5 years and loads of debt. Should be easy, but ...

mumsneedwine · 22/06/2022 09:40

😳 should not type while making a cup of tea !

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 22/06/2022 15:09

I think the F1 capacity question will get squeezed out by bigger issues over the next few years, as the NHS - and particularly primary care - will not survive in its current form. You're right that students need to have confidence that they will have a job at the end of five years (assuming they are safe and competent) but that won't necessarily be in a foundation training programme like the existing one.

Unfortunately, planned changes aren't always coherent, and the introduction of the MLA (medical licensing assessment) doesn't look like it will line up with a move to full GMC registration on graduation, which is something that has been discussed on & off for a few years. Removing the need for F1 by having full competence signed off at the end of medical school would remove a specific bottleneck, although it would force students to make decisions on specialist training pathways before graduating, which is potentially a problem. I suspect any change in postgraduate training would also be likely to reduce graduates' choice about where in the country they work. Whatever happens, some unpopular decisions will have to be made at some point soon.

mumsneedwine · 22/06/2022 15:14

But they already get little say in where in the country they live. And they can't choose a specialty in medical school as won't give seen them all ! You'll get no one doing certain jobs 😂

Monkey2001 · 23/06/2022 11:01

Looks like AQA are going for analysis rather than TAGs - phew, TAGs would have undermined so much! But there will be people anxious about the impact of cheats on grade boundaries.

OP posts:
mumsneedwine · 23/06/2022 12:23

@Monkey2001 thought they would. It's not a perfect answer but better than TAGs - not sure any teacher wouldn't just give A* as we are so fed up the things (& after so many certain schools massively over inflated last year).
They'll pick up some anomalies and I'm sure that it's not so many to affect grade boundaries by much, if at all.
How the leak happened though needs sorting - it's a criminal offence.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 24/06/2022 06:10

DD got an email asking if she wants to go on Liverpool's waiting list. Obviously she has said yes. It has lifted her spirits up.
Last exam today, good luck all those finishing today.
We are going to Keele after the exam for an open day.

Monkey2001 · 24/06/2022 06:55

Oooh, nice news @coffeeandbiscuittime ttime! Good luck today.

Went to Keele yesterday - they had 2,739 applications for 164 places. The medical school and staff were really nice.
They say they are asking for A star ,A,A next year.

kackle · 25/06/2022 18:56

Fingers crossed for a place from Liverpool waitlist

i wonder if other universities will up their requirements to A*AA next year
