Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Offers are in for some, others on waiting lists, others doing their A levels and planning a gap year.

Best of luck everyone for great results on 18th August, we will be here to celebrate, commiserate, advise and generally support you for the last stage of the 2022 journey. 🍀

@Bimkom the formatives are like mocks, summatives are the ones that count. Notts timetables change every week all the way through 😊. Suppose it depends when the doctors are available.
Hope he's enjoying himself - loads of extra curricular sports. And the medics are amazing musicians. Tell him to do the Medics musical in 4th year - it is amazing.

DS2 (in his final year Sheffield) always says he found the hardest thing has been knowing exactly how much to study and what bits to revise or not, because nobody can conceivably learn all medicine or even everything that is covered in lectures. I know he had a sort of impostor syndrome in his first year because it's so unlike A levels with mark schemes etc to work out where you stand in terms of keeping up with the course and your peers. It was only after he'd passed a couple of exams did he relax a bit and know he wasn't completely out of place.
DS1 in Yr 1, Bristol, seems to be busy most days but has Fridays free for study meaning he's been able to keep on top on things and have some weekend time.
@KingscoteStaff your dd must be exhausted. It is stressful but I think the balance between study and socialising gets easier as they go along and find out what's enough but not too much of either.

KingscoteStaff · 06/11/2022 21:39

@Haffdonga At the moment she’s really buzzing! She’s always been a ‘better busy than bored’ type, so she seems to thrive on a packed timetable. She’s sorted out her house for next year, which has been a relief. Main excitement is her first day in hospital on Tuesday, wearing her scrubs!!!!

Haffdonga · 06/11/2022 22:07

Ah, @KingscoteStaff I meant to aim my exhausted comment at @notmedicmum but actually it applies equally to them all, I'm sure. Glad your dd is buzzing!
I don't think ds gets to see inside a hospital until much later on and because of Covid limiting previous opportunities I imagine he'll have seen less of the inside of a hospital than any medical student ever before him by the time he puts on some scrubs!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 07/11/2022 08:06

DD is another taking it all in her stride. I think the fact she did 4 A levels helps as the work load seems quite modest by comparison. She's having great fun socially - mostly hanging around with other medics as they are on a different campus to most other students, but she's in a University lacrosse team so playing matches every Wednesday and meeting lots of other students through that. All in all, so far, so good....

Sorry, I know this has been mentioned ‘up thread’ but I can’t find it.

DS is in y1 of Med School and has asked for a stethoscope for Christmas. Is it a Littman Classic III that everyone gets? Lots of websites- anyone have one they recommend? (I remember the tips about getting it engraved so you get it back…. :-)

Thank you!

KingscoteStaff · 28/11/2022 12:50

That’s the one DD has asked her Granny to get her for Christmas. In a lovely shade of mauve…

KingscoteStaff · 09/12/2022 06:33

@Monkey2001 How did your DS’s interviews go this week? DD was helping out at the Newcastle ones on Thurs - SO pleased that she had online last year rather than MMI!

Monkey2001 · 09/12/2022 09:05

Hi @KingscoteStaff . UEA went well on Monday, Newcastle today. Yes, on line was easier, he has done a lot of travelling this week! Luckily he can fit visits to GF in Nottingham around each interview by being creative about routes! He started with an old friend met at an orchestra last night who is doing music in Newcastle.

Bring involved in interviews is great for existing students,, was she one of the interviewers? DS1 is interviewing at St Andrews this year, it is such good experience for them to see what it is like on the other side of the table!

No, the puny first years were on ‘chatting and putting at ease’ duty plus a little light biscuit snaffling.
