Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Offers are in for some, others on waiting lists, others doing their A levels and planning a gap year.

Best of luck everyone for great results on 18th August, we will be here to celebrate, commiserate, advise and generally support you for the last stage of the 2022 journey. 🍀

DD felt it went well

Same here!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 13/06/2022 20:05

"As expected" was the message from DD today. She's got Maths 2 tomorrow and then will be at the half way point... 6/12 done!

kackle · 14/06/2022 19:20

Imperial is in ucas extra for medicine for anyone who has sat the Bmat

mumsneedwine · 14/06/2022 20:09

@kackle saw that. Really great timing in the middle of exams 🤬

maryso · 15/06/2022 14:25

It's best to call admissions to check about ucas extra. Others including a Cambridge college were in either extra or clearing over the years, and they were simply opening up a pathway to take on a few candidate they wanted, not an open invite. Admissions will very quickly let you know if they are not, possibly due to a diplomatic "admin error".

Given the variability of candidates straight from school, it always seems to me that if med schools invested more in committing their admissions people to a slick clearing operation (and a similarly slick winter op), they would do themselves and candidates a favour by reducing the risk of unmet offers as well as that of choosing the wrong med school. It would be like combining the best of pre and post results offers. It is a bigger advantage to the applicant than the med school to do this, so perhaps that's why they don't, especially the ones who seem to struggle with the main winter process.

Monkey2001 · 15/06/2022 14:31

Somebody on TSR called them and they confirmed that they are willing to look at new applicants who meet the thresholds -

BMAT Thresholds for Applicants with Home fee status
Section 1: 3.5
Section 2: 3.5
Section 3: 2.5 C
Minimum Sum of Scores of Sections 1 and 2 (inclusive of all uplifts): 10.9

I called them this morning. Extra is mainly being used to give places to previously rejected candidates who have already been interviewed. They said it is v unlikely to get an offer if not applied before.
Notts and Plymouth have popped up on Extra too. Need to call them tomorrow.

My lot have decided a gap year is less stressful than relying on Extra.
You can only apply to one, they lock you in for up to 21 days, so if anything else comes along you can't apply. And you still might not get a place. So OK if it's your dream Uni, otherwise it's a risk.

Monkey2001 · 15/06/2022 17:17

@mumsneedwine both Notts and Plymouth are also managing re-activating applicants with waiting lists by using Extra, so could be the same story. I do think Plymouth might end up in Clearing though.

mumsneedwine · 15/06/2022 17:18

@Monkey2001 thanks, I thought that might be the case. I think quite a few might end up in clearing with all the poaching going on.

KingscoteStaff · 16/06/2022 22:45

Good luck all for Biology 2 (The Return…)

coffeeandbiscuittime · 18/06/2022 21:12

DD went to Liverpool open day today and they said that they are going to invite people interviewed onto a waiting list. This won't include DD as she did a dreadful interview but it may give others hope.

MangoSmooothie · 19/06/2022 11:51

Checking in…DS has a firm place at SGUL for next year but is on the waiting list for this year. He’s completed all the checks in case he is given a place for September - student finance, DBS, OH, immunisations etc.

MangoSmooothie · 19/06/2022 11:54

BTW, he’s on a gap year, so has his A level results from last year.

Good luck to anyone’s DC currently sitting exams.

There really should be a fair bit of movement on the waiting list, I hope his organisation pays off! Do SGUL let you know your position on the waiting list?

Not as far as I’m aware, I’ll have to ask DS. It’s just a waiting game now, I think.

KingscoteStaff · 20/06/2022 06:47

Go go go Chemistry people! Hopefully a little cooler than Friday…

Monkey2001 · 20/06/2022 09:28

Just booked UCAT for 31 August. Luckily DS doesn't mind doing it again, was sort of keen to try for a higher score as his actual was lower than his Medify mocks. He won't do anything for it before results day, but if no offer is forthcoming on results day he should be fine with 2 weeks prep.

OP posts:
coffeeandbiscuittime · 20/06/2022 10:41

@Monkey2001 Idaren't suggest applying for UCAT at present as just going to view Liverpool stressed her out and she has still got 2 exams left this week. She is stressing herself out about getting A's. She is overwhelmed at potentially having to do it all again - although at least this time she will listen to me regarding interviews. She is also looking at other unis now not just the RG ones.

Just a quick query can you remember where the list of med schools/ UCAT cut offs was- it was on a TSR thread but I can't find it. Thanks

coffeeandbiscuittime · 20/06/2022 11:22

@kackle thank you. How is your DD with exams , mine has just got home from Chemistry looking happier.

kackle · 20/06/2022 11:40

Havent heard yet !

MidLifeCrisis007 · 21/06/2022 08:13

I wonder if they will void yesterday's AQA chemistry paper? (Have a look on Twitter.... AQA chemistry leak)

DD thankful she sat Edexcel.

mumsneedwine · 21/06/2022 08:15

@MidLifeCrisis007 they can't. Would be too unfair to the majority of students who didn't cheat. It was a nice paper if you knew your stuff.
Hopefully they'll call the police in like the last Edexcell leak. There should be some students v v worried if they paid to see the paper in advance.

Our school seems to think they will void it
