Following on from the Oxbridge rejects thread but I've got rid of those two words. I for one am interested to know where they all end up and when Durham might finally deign to reject/offer DS...

And you will doubtless already be aware from yesterday, but for offer holders who were not able to attend, the academics giving the subject talks all made a point of saying they were always happy to receive emails with any questions applicants may still have.

Eightytwenty · 03/04/2022 12:15

@AmeliaShepherd how funny that you had such a different spread of participants for your courses. IR & History had a large number of US participants - they were very focussed about their graduate opportunities. There were also some voices from NZ/ AU (could be expats) and Europe.

Stockpot · 03/04/2022 12:40

@AmeliaShepherd thanks for the run down. Smile
If it’s not too outing, what does your son want to study?

fishingeagle · 03/04/2022 14:14

@Eightytwenty interesting to hear your St A's IR & History perspective. May I just ask where the US participants' focus on their graduate opportunities landed - I'd be really interested to hear what US IR graduates do afterwards and if they do postgraduate stuff is there anywhere they typically go? DS has expressed an interest in maybe something in the US after undergrad but we would need a whole ton of financial aid so it may be a non-starter.

AmeliaShepherd · 03/04/2022 15:09

No not outing Stockpot His offer is for languages and he is considering History or Classics alongside so it was useful to ask about any pre- requirements. Yes, that is slightly odd Eightytwenty we were aware of lots of international students acting as ambassadors but not at the talks we attended. We just put that down to different arrangements being made.

Eightytwenty · 03/04/2022 15:19

@fishingeagle I think they were just looking for reassurance about their investment!

Stockpot · 03/04/2022 15:24

Two different US parents confided that it has been a chaotic application year in the US due to covid upheaval and the cancellation of the SAT tests (national aptitude tests used universally before covid to sort students.)

SayYouDontMind · 03/04/2022 16:38

Thanks for the run down on the academic stands Amelia we missed them too. I noted that most of the ambassador's were from overseas and heard a few American accents. I expected it to be busier - it was busy enough - but I guess a lot of the US families don't travel all that way just for an offers holder day.

We visited the McIntosh Halls and my DS was amused by all the pizza boxes and bottles of vodka sitting outside some student's rooms in the corridors. The view from one of the study rooms was spectacular and seriously impressed him. We are trying to work out whether self-catered would be a false economy and should we go catered.

I hope all those waiting on offers hear soon. It's not a pleasant experience waiting. And I feel for all the students who have got such stellar results and are getting knocked back.

fishingeagle · 04/04/2022 17:03

Thanks @Eightytwenty - I would imagine so! But so glad to hear of good experiences at the St As open day. Hoping we get the chance to see Edinburgh properly soon.

Good luck to all those still waiting - still radio silence from Durham and LSE here.

doubleshotcappuccino · 04/04/2022 18:06

@fishingeagle ditto xx

Igglepigglesblankie · 04/04/2022 19:23

DS and his girlfriend were just looking at the student room offer spreadsheet for Durham as she is still waiting. They have deduced that some departments have only don international, home and RUK contextual offers so hopefully the standard RUK offers will be next - crossing my fingers for all of you still waiting!

Eightytwenty · 05/04/2022 07:54

How is everyone doing? Sorry wait continues @fishingeagle and @doubleshotcappuccino. How are things @kitnkaboodle?

Is everyone else close to being sorted or are others still waiting?

threestars · 05/04/2022 09:35

DS finally received an offer yesterday- Warwick for Economics. Still waiting to hear from UCL and LSE.
If LSE end up waiting until the last day to make offers/rejections, do they even hold offer holder days? Or is it best to go to their Open Day (tomorrow!)? There was no in-person Open Day before DS applied due to their Covid measures.

LillianGish · 05/04/2022 10:06

Hello @Piggywaspushed - apologies for intruding on this thread, but you’ve been such such a helpful source on other supportive university threads that I just wanted to add that DS is now at Birmingham and has been absolutely blown away by what a fantastic place it is to study. Stunning campus, fabulous sports facilities (some of which are being used for the Commonwealth Games in the summer) a full complement of departments and subjects so you meet a real diversity of students and a fantastic city on the doorstep though the university is so vast you never need go there if you want a purely campus experience. Also living in Birmingham won’t break the bank! I sometimes think Birmingham gets a bad press - it has a slightly unglamorous, unfashionable image - and we did wonder how DS, who has grown up in Paris, would find it (especially as he didn’t manage to visit before he started due to Covid), but it is properly impressive. It was also notable that Birmingham didn’t have a single place in clearing last year and everyone on DS’s course (and in his accommodation) had it as their first choice which seems to go some way to guaranteeing a certain motivation and diligence among students (certainly in comparison with DD’s experience at Cardiff two years earlier). Good luck to your DS and to everyone else on the thread.

Eightytwenty · 05/04/2022 11:36

@threestars congratulations. Are you an old timer who has name changed? Apologies if not!

threestars · 05/04/2022 13:09

Thanks @Eightytwenty !
I was on the old thread a few times but couldn't bear to look after a while as we were hearing nothing after Cambridge 'pool' rejection! He was rejected from Durham a couple of weeks ago, but DS was OK about it as it was a BA not a BSC.
I've definitely been more wound up about the process than him, especially since his school has been announcing all offers in Assembly every morning for the last term... My daughter said it was like everyone had an offer apart from him!
He's predicted highest grades and has always achieved them so I stupidly assumed he'd get offers easily. I'd given up asking him then last night he said "Oh, I forgot to tell you, Warwick made an offer" 🙄 😄 At least I can be more patient with the 2 remaining universities. I mean, it's only been 6 months...

Eightytwenty · 05/04/2022 13:41

Oh good grief. That is horrific. How to make yourself feel like you’re the last man standing. Really glad you’re on the bus with such a good university. As we keep saying it only takes one!

threestars · 05/04/2022 14:24

Thank you!!

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 05/04/2022 14:52

Birmingham "unglamorous" and "unfashionable" how dare you....said in my best Brummie accent.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 05/04/2022 14:57

DD college held a dinner with the Principle for the 10 "elite" (their words) Oxbridge offer holders a few weeks ago, nothing for the rejects and nothing for any other child who works just as bloody hard to get these grades. Glad to see them being taught about elitism at such a young age.

Eightytwenty · 05/04/2022 15:13

That’s even worse than prizes for attendance. What are we the 1950’s?!

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 05/04/2022 16:08

@Eightytwenty

That’s even worse than prizes for attendance. What are we the 1950’s?!
I know DD was smarting from it, especially as she is student governor and gives up a fair chunk of her own time to attend school meetings yet gets nowt. I know it was a PR stunt but it left a bit of a bad taste to be fair especially when we know how hard our DC also worked and had to deal with the rejection too.
fishingeagle · 05/04/2022 16:36

@threestars congratulations on the Warwick offer! I can't believe the whole announcing offers in assembly thing - I can see it was well-meaning but my DS would have been sat there like Spartacus in reverse until a few weeks ago so you have all my sympathy.

Likewise @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango - again I guess well-intentioned but I'm inwardly going NOOOOh - don't pile the pressure on, take it off at every turn lest God forbid any of them misses their offer by being completely stressed out, over-cooked and over-worked. I think girls in particular are prone to it. Less is most definitely more.

Lighthouseblue · 05/04/2022 16:43

Still waiting on Kings and Durham for Economics here. Rejected by Manchester and LSE but accepted by UCL

Puffalicious · 05/04/2022 16:53

threestars Well done! The assembly is shocking- so insensitive. As for the elite dinner, FFS! Never mind the pressure on the holders, but the sheet dismissal of the other DC who worked their bums off and are no lesser for not getting an Oxbridge offer. It really beggar's belief.

You all know about the school I work in- inner-city Glasgow, very, very deprived- and we run around celebrating and clapping for every kid who secures a positive destination, whether that be medicine at Edinburgh, a college place for hairdressing, a painting and decorating apprenticeship or a job ina coffee shop (all celebrated in the past 3 weeks). Sheest.
