Following on from the Oxbridge rejects thread but I've got rid of those two words. I for one am interested to know where they all end up and when Durham might finally deign to reject/offer DS...

@272Newnames Welcome! My DD is going to study Politics and IR. I have been looking at the accommodation too and read that. I have booked a hotel for the Friday as most of Dd choices arrive that day. I am going to make it a mini break and saunter around Bath like a lady of leisure. It's lovely that you went there and enjoyed it too, DD knew instantly it was the place for her. I hope all our dc will be happy there.

MillicentFaucet · 19/08/2022 12:47

Hello again, I've been having a 'mare trying to post from my phone so had to plop & run yesterday.
Huge thanks to all the supportive parents on here who have helped me to keep everything in perspective after the initial disappointment of rejection. It's great to see the familiar names again and catch up with where we're all at.
Yesterday was a bit of a drama as we drove off the overnight ferry after a 4 week holiday, the plan was to get to school for results at about 10ish but border checks etc meant that we didn't get there until almost 12. DS refused to look at UCAS preferring to open the envelope (he couldn't really explain why?!?) so I was a knot of anxiety for a few more hours. His results were exactly as his teachers predicted A* for Maths & Physics and an A for Art, his offer was AAA so it was a huge relief to see he'd aced it. We dropped him at the pub, his mates were already a few pints ahead of him😁
Any fellow Bath parents who are staying over on drop off weekend be warned that the hotels are already filling up (and bloody expensive)

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 19/08/2022 12:48

Also as a single parent DD has chosen the cheapest options her first choice is actually the really ugly building that looks like it's been on fire 😭😱 Her thinking is it has the best views as it's the tallest (ignoring that it sits over the student union and has the potential to be noisy!). We shall see - just hoping for on campus as quite a few got allocated city centre accommodation last year.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 19/08/2022 12:50

@MillicentFaucet Well done to your DS I admire his restraint!! Yes I noticed the hotels booking up to so have booked one for the Friday but it could potentially be the Sunday she arrives, hope to hear from the soon.

MillicentFaucet · 19/08/2022 13:06

Oh I didn't realize the accommodation had different start dates, I've booked for Saturday - eek
It's a 6-7 hour drive each way for us so not a lot of flexibilty, I hope it'll be OK

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 19/08/2022 13:18

Bath move in dates

Here you go hopefully this works. Its a 3 hour trip for me and I could do it in a day but I want to relax and enjoy Bath after my shitty summer 😂

MillicentFaucet · 19/08/2022 13:25

Thanks for that Tango I know his top choices were all on the east side but looking at that it could be any day. Can you tell that we went on holiday and just forgot about all this stuff until yesterday morning🤔
I hope you get to swan around Bath, I went down with DS for offer holder day and loved it. He'll be fed up of us popping down to see him.

272Newnames · 19/08/2022 13:31

Yes I saw the move in dates too, we are a 3-4 hour drive away so a 9-1 slot will involve a very early start if we don't stay. Our move in dates vary from Friday to Sunday so I really can't guess when it will be. And I know many people who went last year and didn't get any of their choices so until that email comes, who knows!
We currently have a triple room in the travelodge booked for the Friday at Saturday (at £400+!) but it is cancellable. Booked months ago.

DS has also gone for the cheaper end of accommodation. Norwood is about 6th on the list though. When I went I stayed on the top floor in the corresponding building at the opposite end of the Parade (Wessex) which is no longer accommodation but was identical. The rooms are smallish but they're really ok, I am a strong believer in them having to rough it a bit at uni like we did.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 19/08/2022 13:55

@272Newnames Yes me too (roughing it that is). The problem for us won't be the first year as DD will be able to get the accommodation bursary but private rents are £££ so I'm nervous about the subsequent years. She knows she has to get a job and her dad and I can help out a bit but I have a DS going next year too so it's going to get expensive.

@MillicentFaucet Yikes £400 😱😱 that's the problem with Bath it's a tourist hotspot and always pricey - beautiful but pricey.

272Newnames · 19/08/2022 14:04

I am fortunate in a way that university was not for elder DS, he has done an apprenticeship instead so only have one to pay for.

This DS has been lucky to be brought up in a financially comfortable environment but thankfully isn't entitled about it. He was fine with no ensuite etc but some of his friends going elsewhere have been really demanding of their parents, insisting on double bed ensuite newest accommodation etc. I think they have to realise that it doesn't just come on a plate.

Eastwood is top of the list here but who knows what they will actually get.

Volterra · 19/08/2022 17:08

DS will be applying for accommodation on Monday so who knows where he will be . We have now moved house and are about an hour’s drive away which makes life easy for drop off day. Broadband just installed, a week later than appointment so he is very very happy and has kindly sorted my washing out - good practice for university.

Puffalicious · 19/08/2022 20:08

So delighted to hear your good news fishingeagle. I was rooting for your DS.👏

threestars · 20/08/2022 08:42

Just a quick message to say THANK YOU for this thread. It made me feel less lonely when my DS missed out on Cambridge (pooled), was having to wait and wait for uni decisions which turned out to be rejections (especially looking at you, LSE…).
BUT you only can only attend one university and he met the requirements for his one offer!! Off to Warwick with his 2 A stars and 2 As.
Very relieved, and very grateful to all of you.

It has been a godsend hasn't it? Fab news for Warwick & amazing results. It feels good to know where they are going, just 5 weeks until drop off 🥺

threestars · 20/08/2022 09:12

Exactly! It’s been very comforting.
He’s been preparing me for his absence by having a ridiculous social life this summer 😅 but the thought of his empty bedroom not even crossing paths at midnight soon is starting to dawn…

LobeliaBaggins · 20/08/2022 10:02

DS was out till 4 am the last two days:)

I am now worrying that he is not a very good cook. He has spent 2 years studying all hours and spent the summer just recovering from the FM exam, or so he claims! I suppose he will learn.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 20/08/2022 10:16

Noodles, it's a staple diet for DD!

Volterra · 22/08/2022 08:32

DS has just submitted accommodation for Bath. Not much left, 4 really as other 3 are over 21 only and I think just there so form can be submitted as won’t submit without having all 7 slots filled. All 4 are city centre ones . I would have preferred him on campus but not the end of the world.

Volterra · 22/08/2022 08:36

Actually I think one on campus

278Newnames · 22/08/2022 10:05

@Volterra thwy have started to allocate but it will be in tranches over the next few weeks.
we know a couple of people that ended up in town last year and said it actually worked out great. Certainly Carpenter House is in a great location. The others are in decent locations too, just not quite as good in my opinion.

Volterra · 22/08/2022 12:52

Thanks @278Newnames. It is his fault for not sorting earlier for the first deadline but I think wherever will be fine as is used to being away from home in the week and being on time. End of the day it is only a year.

Stockpot · 24/08/2022 19:14

Tears to joy! Tears for the halls allocation at St Andrew’s; joy because one of her economics papers was reviewed and she now has 3 A*s.

Phew! That was good news when we needed it!

SayYouDontMind · 24/08/2022 21:01

That's great news Stockpot - on the results front anyway. Sorry she didn't get the preferred accommodation - I'm sure she'll be fine once she's there though. Is it more expensive than you wanted?

Stockpot · 24/08/2022 21:44

You are right, she will be fine. It is a little pricy considering it’s in catered. She certainly didn’t need an en-suite.
Space in Halls is limited and there is a lot of variation at St Andrew’s. It seems a lot of DC didn’t get their preference. What’s odd is that other DC who did want en-suites did not get them while my DD got one when she didn’t want one. Some got catered when they didn’t want it, while she did.

I think they need the Maths department to help them figure out their allocation process. They seem to be sub-optimising.

She won’t enjoy cooking every meal for herself in a small kitchen shared by 5, but she’ll adjust.

Puffalicious · 24/08/2022 22:00

Crazy stuff Stockpot. You'd think there'd be some way of matching accomodation to requests 🤔. If only there were clever people or a clever computer system that could do that...hmmm...
