Following on from the Oxbridge rejects thread but I've got rid of those two words. I for one am interested to know where they all end up and when Durham might finally deign to reject/offer DS...

The prom will be great angie . DS1 really, really enjoyed his. He got the 'glow up' award- apparently it means he's scrubbed up well since the beginning of secondary, turned out more handsome than they thought they would or something! Kids!

Stockpot · 27/06/2022 19:41

Ahhh, I love seeing kids coming into their own and getting a boost!

Cambridge 2022 offer stats (interactive graphs) now published, just in case anyone is interested? Very competitive year.

Shimy · 29/06/2022 19:24

@Darbs76 Congrats on your promotion. Sound great.

Darbs76 · 29/06/2022 19:36

Thank you so much @Shimy. Kids growing up now, will just have one child left (from 3) at home full time from September and she starts GCSE’s, so all change and time for me to start focusing on my career now. Obviously being mum still comes first but kids becoming more independent now which helps

Shimy · 29/06/2022 19:54

What a fantastic time to have a promotion @Darbs76 Just as they're all flying the nest plus they're old enough you can really focus on yourself and your career now.

Darbs76 · 29/06/2022 20:59

Thanks @Shimy - we intend to celebrate a lot of things during our August holiday, my promotion, DS’s 18th (5 days before holiday), DS’s A level results (day before holiday). Cannot wait. After the last 2yrs things seem to be on the up

TangowhiskyAlphaTango · 30/06/2022 05:34

@Darbs76 I missed your promotion, congratulations!! 💃💃💃 Hope you enjoy your celebrations xx

Thanks for posting the stats. It confirmed what I already knew HSPS was very competitive and Dd chose one of the most popular colleges. If she did it all again (shudder) then a more strategic approach would've meant a better chance. Actually really glad she didn't get in I just know, after the level of study she put in for A-levels, it would've been a tremendous amount of constant pressure. Dd flies off to Majorca today with her BF on a very much needed break, wish it were me!

Darbs76 · 30/06/2022 06:05

Thanks so much @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango. I hope your daughter has a great time in Majorca!! Very jealous.

Startoftheyear2022 · 06/07/2022 08:08

IB results day. Anyone else waiting for the portal to go live later??

Igglepigglesblankie · 06/07/2022 09:18

Not waiting for DS but my DNephew is waiting for IB results….he thinks UCAS might update before IB is published at 2:45….good luck to everyone waiting for IB!!!!

Valleyofthedollymix · 06/07/2022 12:12

Mine off away doing lord knows what in Greece with a huge gang. Managed to burn his hand on a kettle with five minutes of arriving.

It's odd not being able to commit mentally to university at the beginning of September without the caveat 'if he gets his grades'. It's such a daft system.

Congrats to @Darbs76 on promotion. We need to have our own goals and achievements.

I have posted on this a couple of times (and Oxbridge one also) and lurked too but my son got his IB results today, after 45 mins of it crashing and saying he was not registered. Anyway he got 45 points and is off to Durham, we are thrilled and relieved! I hope other IB parents are ok too.

Shimy · 06/07/2022 18:42

That's a tremendous result@StElwicks . That's the max you can get, isn't it? congratulations and a huge well done to him. What's he going to study?

StElwicks · 06/07/2022 19:29

He is going to do Nat Sci, but first a long summer of inter railing and family holidays and earning some money awaits.

Volterra · 07/07/2022 06:17

Congratulations to him @StElwicks , wonderful news!

Darbs76 · 07/07/2022 06:42

Thanks for the congrats on the promotion! Agreed it’s really important to have our own goals and aspirations too.

Congrats @StElwicks - what a relief

doubleshotcappuccino · 09/07/2022 22:10

Amazing news !@StElwicks !

Tiggertigerpants · 16/07/2022 15:30

Just discovered this thread! Wish I’d seen it back when DS started his journey this year….he got his IB results the other week and achieved 45 points and is also going to Durham! What a rollercoaster it has been. I am relieved he is not talking about reapplying to Oxbridge despite his school advisors encouraging him to do so…..he didn’t even get an interview when he applied the first time which was a bit of a shock (especially as there was no entrance exam for his subject and he had 45 predicted plus 12 9s at GCSE.) I read his personal statement afterwards thinking it must have been dreadful but it was actually pretty impressive so i’m pretty sure another attempt would be a waste of time as whatever they are looking for he clearly doesn’t have….besides he is thrilled to be going to Durham…

StElwicks · 16/07/2022 18:37

Well done to your son @Tiggertigerpants - and off to Durham too, how brilliant! My father-in-law keeps suggesting DS should re-apply but he has no appetite too. He is looking forward to Durham and has totally rejected any idea of Oxbridge. I think he will probably have a more fulfilling student life at Durham, I don’t know - but he is very very happy to be going there.

fishingeagle · 17/07/2022 17:00

@Tiggertigerpants @StElwicks Huge congratulations! DD at Durham received an absolutely superb education, loved every minute of it and is absolutely flying in her career. DS went to Oxford and is doing well, but I honestly think Durham prepared DD better for the work place. She was worked VERY hard so if it's academic rigour you're after, fear not!

Eightytwenty · 20/07/2022 17:08

DS has been assigned his St Andrews accommodation. He’s happy with the halls he’s been assigned - just have to hope he gets on with his room mate!
