Following on from the Oxbridge rejects thread but I've got rid of those two words. I for one am interested to know where they all end up and when Durham might finally deign to reject/offer DS...

@fishingeagle one of DS’ friends still waiting for D/LSE for IR too. Hope you hear v soon.

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango and @Geamhradh have a fab open day tomorrow.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 09/04/2022 05:58

Up bright and early ready for our open day @Geamhradh Grin Yes to the chicken!!!!!! Can you imagine walking around campus with that!! There is no doubt it is a beautiful place and I hope she loves the campus too. Please feedback and let me know what she/you thought and have a lovely day, I suspect it will be a busy one.

@Eightytwenty Very sorry to hear about Durham BUT sounds like a blessing in disguise yet rejection still stings....we all know from the Oxbridge situation it will be short lived and our lovely brilliant DC will find their place soon. I would feel the same as you secretly happy to have them closer to home Smile

fishingeagle · 09/04/2022 08:50

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango and @Geamhradh hope you have a great day.

Geamhradh · 09/04/2022 12:29

Loving it so far.
The tote bag and light lunch are quite impressive Grin

SayYouDontMind · 09/04/2022 12:36

Geamhradh A tote bag AND a light lunch - that’s more than what we got at St Andrews!

Bath is such a lovely place - I hope you and Tango enjoy the rest of your day.

fishingeagle · 09/04/2022 17:37

@Geamhradh so glad you're feeling the love! Well done Bath - quite right too. Contrast with the disdainful hauteur which the total radio silence on the part of DS's remaining choices seems to betoken. I'd quite like a bit of love and fuss too to be fair and after such a horrendous wait if we ever get to an open day I'm definitely gonna want a tote bag and a light lunch.

threestars · 09/04/2022 17:57

Btw, late decisions from universities are meaning pupils are missing out on offer holder days. Son was sent an email inviting him to one that took place over a month before they made the offer:

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2022 18:14

I'm still upset that we somehow missed the tote bag handout at Birmingham. Lovely they were too.

Stockpot · 09/04/2022 18:28

No light lunch or tote bag at St As, but we did get a free face mask and some biscuits and juice at the end of the day!

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 09/04/2022 18:35

Where were you! I was eyeing up any mum and daughter and thinking is that them?? 😂

Geamhradh · 09/04/2022 18:48

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango
Me too Grin

I am tall and blonde and had a cornflower blue jumper and an ffp2. Grin DD is short and has masses of long curly blonde hair.
When everyone went off to the activities I stayed in the foyer place with the tea urns and flapjacks and thought how lovely the floppy haired student ambassadors were.

We arrived late and flustered as we walked from the centre thinking it would be a long but pleasant stroll. Arrived feeling like I'd been up Snowden. We latched onto a tour group which had already set off (and found ourselves with 2 other Italian families which was too funny)

We've just had a wander round town and mused on how there are more people in Waterstones than Primark which is rather lovely.

Talking to some other families, there was a guy with his son also holding Exeter and Bath and rejected by St. A (I said at least they've let you know!) DD was talking to a girl who will probably firm LSE and have Bath second.

Think DD will now firm Bath.

This is the conversation I was having with the lad and dad Exeter/Bath combo. By the time his son heard from Exeter there was no place left on the Open Day. Also as DD pointed out st Andrews were the ones promising everyone would hear by the end of March at the latest.
TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 09/04/2022 19:18

@Geamhradh I am petite short and blonde had a striped top and long beige Mac on. I did spot a girl with a mass of gorgeous curly hair wonder if it was you?! I can't believe you walked up the hill you'll never do that again it looks brutal!! We noticed lots of international students too so hopefully a lovely mix of students. I am glad she liked my DD thankfully came away today knowing she'd chosen the right place for her, was worth the 6 hour round drive 😴 When do you fly home?

fishingeagle · 09/04/2022 21:36

Love hearing happy open day tales. I am living vicariously through you all.

Eightytwenty · 09/04/2022 22:04

@fishingeagle one day you too shall go to the ball xxx

@Geamhradh @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango glad you had a good day. We didn’t get anything from St A. Love a freebie.

Bless you what a shitty situation to in, I really do feel for you. I was listening to a lad behind us yesterday saying he is still waiting on Durham and LSE and that he wishes they would just put him out of his misery now so he could make a decision. The girl who gave us a campus tour said she was putting in halls in the city last year so didnt get any of her 10 choices but that there were loads of them in the same situation. This years DC are really feeling the after affects of grade inflation and it is absolutely crap for those still waiting, I wonder if it will be any better for DS next year?
nativityplayreject · 10/04/2022 14:34

Hi all. Parent of one of last year's OR's here. Dc took a year out thinking they wanted to re-apply this year but then, after a lot of research/consideration, decided against the idea so just applied to 5 other Unis instead.

They have offers from all except one and as research here plus elsewhere appears to show that many have already had Economics offers from Warwick, despite no rejection yet, it looks like they won't be getting an offer from them which will be a blow as it was their absolute favourite.

They were really hopeful for an offer especially as their GCSE results (top grades) were achieved through actually sitting the exams and not assessed grades. School said the personal statement was as strong as any they've seen for an Economics applicant of somewhere like Warwick/LSE etc and dc already has all A*s in hand.

It's starting to feel like last year's Oxbridge rejection all over again but without the interview/pooling/rejection process.

It's encouraging to see this years OR/CR cohort picking up and moving on but from reading the various threads it's obviously proving to be as challenging a year to be applying as last year, with excellent candidates being rejected by some Unis but with offers from others.

Clearly Durham/St A's/LSE/Warwick/UCL/Bath et al seem to have rather different ways of deciding who does/doesn't get offers.

Anyone else still waiting on Warwick ?

doubleshotcappuccino · 10/04/2022 14:59

@nativityplayreject a wave and a welcome .. don't have any Warwick news as she didn't apply there but just wanted to say that it's great to read your post and see how much they grow and evolve in the year .. I can see this already; the No from
C seems such a long time ago now and the sting subsides .. I'm sorry you are still waiting though

fishingeagle · 10/04/2022 16:02

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango and @Eightytwenty you are both lovely. We have got Edinburgh to look forward to but since his offer is so very high I'm trying to keep it low key. It would be great for him to get something with a few less A* in it!

@nativityplayreject welcome aboard - I can only imagine what it must have been like for you doing this two years in a row! DS is at an independent and v few of his cohort who have applied to the usual suspects have heard back from all five unless they've applied for STEM or languages. It's great that your DC has got four Economics offers though; some of DS's friends have none or only one offer for Economics, Business and similar. Warwick apparently v slow this year too. Hope you hear soon.

The methodology this year as far as I can make out seems to be to drip-feed offers out and see who accepts, but given that according to UCAS a far higher percentage of applicants than usual have used all five choices I'm not sure how that helps the places we all seem to be waiting on. But what do I know?

Piggywaspushed · 10/04/2022 16:35

nativity. DS's best friend hasn't had an offer from Warwick yet for economics.

Stockpot · 10/04/2022 16:41

Nor DD’s friend.

nativityplayreject · 10/04/2022 18:42

Thanks for the welcome, really feel a bit less isolated now.

@Piggywaspushed and @Stockpot any idea what those ds / dd's friends' GCSE profile/ predicted A level grades are ? Dc is despairing somewhat over trying to figure out whether it's worth holding on or to start looking at accepting elsewhere to just to be able to get the accommodation booking process started as they would prefer to be able to select rather than have to take what's left accommodation wise.

Having grades in hand means no firm/insurance, they'll have to accept one offer and that's them committed.

Dc is working full time and finding it hard to fit in open days/offer holder visits as employer is proving very inflexible. Warwick's offer holder days have passed now and unless those still waiting hear back soon. they'll all miss the only remaining option of an online virtual offer holder session which I think is in 2 weeks time.

Piggywaspushed · 10/04/2022 18:53

DS's friend at state comprehensive school of dubious calibre. Not sure of all grades but 9s and 8s, I believe (certainly with the TAGs and the way they were done he is the reason whey DS didn't get 9s for business and Spanish cos he got them...). Predicted 3 A*s - maths, economics, history. Doesn't do further maths, which technically is not a requirement. Hmm.

Piggywaspushed · 10/04/2022 18:55

It's really shoddy that they are having offer holder days before making many many offers!

Stockpot · 10/04/2022 20:42

DDs friend is predicted 3 A*s and one A.
No News from Warwick or the LSE.
