Not sure if there is already a thread on this? My son is hoping to apply to Cambridge for Computer Science for October 2023 start.

@HoneyMobster my DS got them after half term

HoneyMobster · 24/06/2022 17:09

We got them this week

OnePlusOneEquals · 24/06/2022 17:51

Our 6th form is doing further tests after the summer hols, to give them a chance to boost their predicted grades. But they say they won’t lower them from the current ones. DS very happy with his, so not panicking at all. Just glad he knows what to do and when. We’ll just see how he feels about Oxford after next week and take it from there.

WhiteCarnation · 24/06/2022 18:45

Well that was short lived. DS has been predicted A (chem), A (Bio), A* (maths) and is of the view these won't produce an offer for Cam Medicine. So I thin he has decided to drop Cam off the list. I guess this means I will (sadly) be leaving this thread.

HoneyMobster · 24/06/2022 18:55

I think an extra A* would be better. Any chance one of those could be bumped up with a September extra exam? I know our school will consider that @WhiteCarnation

theoldhasgone · 24/06/2022 19:03

We had predicted grades this week, yes.

rifling · 26/06/2022 17:18

Hello. Can I join? My ds17 has decided he wants to apply for Oxford and is apparently researching it himself but I have no idea about the application process. We are in Italy and looking at the scores requested, I think it is unlikely he'll succeed but don't want to put him off!

HoneyMobster · 26/06/2022 17:52

Always worth a go @rifling if the predicted grades are in ballpark. What subject does your DS have in mind? My DS might be going for PPE but could switch to Economics and Management.

rifling · 26/06/2022 20:36

Same! Although this week he's been talking about English literature which would be a huge departure from what he's studied so who knows?

WhiteCarnation · 27/06/2022 09:46

@Honeymobster Thanks for your reply. He has submitted an appeal to the school to raise both As to A*s. But I suspect they won't bump them up. We shall see...

What is a September late exam?

HoneyMobster · 27/06/2022 10:58

@WhiteCarnation - some schools (our will) can allow a 'resit' of the end of year exam for a student to prove they're capable of a higher grade before the predicted grades are submitted to UCAS in the autumn. If your school doesn't normally do that it could be suggested to them so as to show your child is willing to make an effort over the summer.

WhiteCarnation · 27/06/2022 12:38

@honeymobster Thank you. I shall find out.

Codfishermen · 27/06/2022 15:21

Interesting, everyone saying don't apply to Scotland. Is this because Scottish students take priority or all Scots/EU students are applying to Scotland because of no fees? Or both? It drives me mad as a Scot my child can have no agency because she was born in England. She'll still put down Edinburgh but I'm making it clear to her that O and Edin are very long shots. It's a real shame :(

stayingpositiveifpossible · 27/06/2022 20:10

Can I join as well? Already a long thread I know. My main aim is for me to keep stress levels down and have some company on the journey!

My DD has her five UCAS choices pretty much ready. Keen on Oxford

(which is where she is currently doing UNIQ at Trinity College)
she has also been invited to Cambridge summer school and Bath.

So a lot of action here - over the summer holidays.

Will see what she says about Oxford when she comes back. Day 1 and she got there okay and I've not heard anything so presume she is enjoying it! No doubt it will give her a more realistic view of what studying there is like.

She is with the Sutton Trust and they produce good info for parents, although with mock exams etc I have only been able to process so much info. Just trying to keep the timeline of things we've got to do in my head - and getting used to it.

OnePlusOneEquals · 27/06/2022 20:21

@stayingpositiveifpossible which college is your daughter staying at? Would be interesting to hear her views - and which subject does she wish to study?

stayingpositiveifpossible · 27/06/2022 20:33

Hello there,
OnePlusoneequals

UNIQ summer school is at Trinity College. She is thinking about LInguistics and Psychology.

stayingpositiveifpossible · 27/06/2022 20:34

She won't be back for a couple of days. My guess is either she will be mad keen or put off entirely! We'll see will update here for info.

Anyone else's darlings at a UNIQ event?

Aurea · 27/06/2022 20:35

My elder son is studying at Trinity College, Oxford. He loves it there!
The college was very supportive during covid times and the pastoral care is fab.

stayingpositiveifpossible · 27/06/2022 21:29

Thats nice to hear that. DD is not seventeen yet and her going away is a bit nerve wracking for me. Glad that elder son loves it there and pastoral staff supportive that is great! Will keep you posted!

HoneyMobster · 24/06/2022 16:50

Have people had predicted grades yet?

Yes a few weeks ago now

Yes, Oxford and Cambridge here.

OnePlusOneEquals · 28/06/2022 06:15

@stayingpositiveifpossible I’m sure she’ll have a fantastic time. Oxford is where my DS wishes to apply, but has got a place on a Cambridge course shortly. But he will be at Oxford’s open days tomorrow and Thursday with a vague timetable of where to visit. His 6th form have a few colleges for them to stay at overnight and he’s hoping he’ll be allocated to Keble as it’s the closest one to the science area.

stayingpositiveifpossible · 28/06/2022 07:57

Feedback so far from UNIQ at Oxford includes a challenging mix of lectures plus 'lovely' people and socialising on the green in a group. Just the ticket.

Hope the open days go well. DD also place at Cambridge summer school later this hols.

stayingpositiveifpossible · 28/06/2022 07:58

Yes predicted grades. I hadn't realised those were the ones used for UCAS in autumn. Have I got that right?

stayingpositiveifpossible · 28/06/2022 07:59

hello bettburg hope UNIQ goes well.
