Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

Congrats @KingscoteStaff dd! 👏👏👏

Daisysway · 10/02/2022 17:51

Congratulations @Kingscotestaff dd. Thats a very impressive early offer when Bristol are still interviewing.

bitsbots · 10/02/2022 21:04

Congratulations @Kingscotestaff dd! Star Star

Monkey2001 · 10/02/2022 21:25

@KingscoteStaff DC who are very good at interviews tend to get a fistful of offers. One good reason to hold out for Newcastle is that it is so much cheaper than Bristol! Getting private flats in Bristol is a bit of a challenge these days, not as bad as St Andrews, but they go very quickly.

@opoponax has your DS sorted his accommodation for next year yet?

opoponax · 10/02/2022 21:30

Yes he is all sorted for next year @Monkey2001 and has found a great house in Jesmond with a mix of medic and non-medic friends. It's not exactly cheap but it is very nice.

Monkey2001 · 10/02/2022 21:59

@opoponax cheap probably means a different thing in Newcastle though! DS1 is struggling with a budget of £600/month in St Andrews. He is part of a group of 7 which limits the options too. I have heard that Jesmond is the place to be for students.

DS has a similar budget to your DS1 but it is a really nice house with ensuites etc. It's a mixed group and I think the girls were calling the shots on what was an acceptable standard and the boys just went along with it all. It certainly all seems to be happening in Jesmond but he will missing falling out of bed and into the medical school right next door.

LaLaFlottes · 11/02/2022 07:38

Lovely to see a couple of offers starting to come in! Hopefully many more to follow.

For anyone still to have interviews I remember a great piece of advice last year was to think of the qualities required to be a Dr such as empathy, resilience, communication, teamwork, problem solving etc.

Make a bullet point list of work experience or other experience demonstrating this or where the applicant has seen this.

All medical schools select to these types of criteria so almost all questions will be looking for one of these and if you identify which one is wanted and have a mental list of things that show it, it can remove some of the panic.

I just feel this sums it up and makes a lot of sense.

If it's any consolation, DS1 is paying £146 a week plus bills for his 2nd year house in Durham. The landlords are getting very rich from students as bulge years caused by CAGS have bolstered demand.

Monkey2001 · 11/02/2022 13:21

Yes, student rents seem to be eye-watering these days, not sure when that started!

A friend of DD's has got a Glasgow offer (RUK) this evening. So pleased for him.

Chunni240 · 14/02/2022 22:04

MidLifeCrisis007 · 14/02/2022 22:17

@Chunni240.... it wasn't my DD who got the offer (she's actually waiting on St Andrews!). It was her friend who got the offer. I just wanted folk to know that Glasgow were on the move with their RUK offers!

BabbleBee · 15/02/2022 21:00

Thank you all.

No, not yet @Monkey2001. Her preference would be York but she’s so delighted she doesn’t care where it is!

Still waiting on Keele to know if she’s got an interview and feedback from Birmingham.
