Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Monkey2001 · 27/01/2022 14:26

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

Don't worry about DD @mumsneedwine - she has her Oxford offer 😊

Given the offer she has the only other one of the other 3 that would make a sensible insurance would be Leeds.

KingscoteStaff · 09/02/2022 21:41

It’s DD!

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2022 21:46

@KingscoteStaff fantastic news !!! @HoneyMobster Oxford offer is fantastic too. Any offer is fantastic !
Well done 🥳🥂

HoneyMobster · 09/02/2022 21:49

I am so pleased for your DD @KingscoteStaff ! How does Bristol rank on her list? I think she is waiting for Bart's as well?

KingscoteStaff · 09/02/2022 21:52

Well it’s top of her list now!

Waiting on Barts, Newcastle and Birm.

KingscoteStaff · 09/02/2022 21:55

Newcastle would be fave, but the competition is crazy.

HoneyMobster · 09/02/2022 21:56

You only need one offer!

PotentiallyPositive · 09/02/2022 22:00

Fantastic news @KingscoteStaff. Congatulations to your DD. Hopefully Newcastle will come through too. However, the Bristol course is pretty much identical to the Newcastle one. Smile

Monkey2001 · 09/02/2022 22:57

Woohoo - congratulations @KingscoteStaff! She must have done really well to get an early offer! So it is starting, gulp....

@KingscoteStaff

Well it’s top of her list now!

Waiting on Barts, Newcastle and Birm.

Congratulations KingscoteStaff and your DD!

We had that experience. The one that offered first and early (in our case Nottingham - first day they offered) shot up DS's estimation. He did consider other factors - and I pushed him to do so, but underlying there was this sense that they clearly really wanted him, which made him want them back. It wasn't by any means the favourite going in, but it ended up being where he firmed.

opoponax · 10/02/2022 01:01

Congratulations to your DD @KingscoteStaff. Brilliant to get an early offer. DS got one on the first day that Newcastle sent out offers last year and he was on cloud nine. It had always been his favourite and the early offer sealed the deal for him. Like @Bimkom I encouraged him to step back and consider all the factors for all options before final decisions were made but realistically that was always going to be the one.

This needs highlighting more, we do need to train more healthcare staff this does put pressure on us as we then need to teach and support them in practice.
This though would be a relatively short term challenge for a long term gain. Let's hope the discussion on the 11th does increase places , even if it's only by a small amount.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 10/02/2022 07:09

congrats to your DD @KingscoteStaff!

Fab news!

Solarlantern · 10/02/2022 08:31

Congratulations @KingscoteStaff - what great news!

Monkey2001 · 10/02/2022 08:41

DS1 also chose the one who offered first and early, it really does make you feel quite special!

@coffeeandbiscuittime let's at least hope that they agree not to penalise for over-recruitment as they have said they plan to do. I am afraid my hopes are not high, the political system does not reward decisions which take 7 years+ to deliver results.

DD’s last interview later today. She’s feeling a bit down about it, says you have to have won a Nobel prize to be offered a place! I’m guessing she feels this way having read too many model interview answers on the internet. What can I say to boost her confidence?

Monkey2001 · 10/02/2022 09:17

@notmedicmum where is the interview? At some of them you can say 2/3 of the interviewees get offers in a normal year and most are just normal "good" candidates. Ecolier on TSR (the medicine supremo) says you don't want to stand out, just be a good candidate. TSR interview thread is ridiculously advanced, most interviews go nowhere near the things discussed there!

It’s at Southampton and it’s a virtual panel interview, which I think will work better for her than virtual MMI.
It’s reassuring to know that 2/3 interviewed get offers. I’m confident that she would get the offer grades (based on previous years’ offers).
What is a “good”candidate? I’ve suggested that she focus on the attributes they are looking for and give examples from her own experience of where she has shown those attributes.

notmedicmum · 10/02/2022 09:35

Forgot to @Monkey2001 previous post!

Monkey2001 · 10/02/2022 09:41

@notmedicmum that sounds like good advice. DS much preferred the panel at Newcastle to the MMI at Manchester. Thinking of examples of when you have demonstrated good team work, what you have done after making a wrong decision are great. Why medicine (or a variant) and why Southampton are pretty much guaranteed to come up

My DS interviewed here 4 years ago they asked him what he liked about the city and also the names of both universities in Southampton the second of which he didn't know :/!
Monkey2001 · 10/02/2022 10:23

@Lovecatsanddogs did he get an offer?!

Is it Southampton Solent?

No! Yes it is :)

notmedicmum · 10/02/2022 11:46

Sad @Lovecatsanddogs that he didn’t get an offer. Hopefully he got one at another uni.
@Monkey2001 will pass on your tips and to remember Southampton Solent! 🤞 for this afternoon. We can chill after that - till the offer/no offer decisions are made.

Thanks yes he did get the one! Ds is 4th year at Exeter now. It's gone very quickly as he graduates next year. I am still traumatised by the process ha.
