Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

Thanks. Interesting.

Thinking about it the question DD got from a couple of medical schools was what she would want to study instead should she not get a place, rather than the field of medicine she might want to study. Bizarrely the person roped in to interview that day was from that medicine related field.

I had heard that some medical schools have a reputation for producing GPs. Maybe a myth. I had simply extrapolated that they might be actively seeking potential GPs. (The daughter of a GP I know went there, and is now doing her GP training, so something worked!)

I meant that too many people want to stay in London for F1/F2.

I think there is a "thing" that graduates from Oxbridge and people going into medicine with 3 A*s are less likely to become GPs. I suspect the reasons are very complicated though and include things like the way points are allocated for the competitive specialisms and the fact that GP is not nearly as competitive. DS1 wants to be a cardio thoracic surgeon - as that means competing with a whole year cohort for 6 places nationally, every point you get counts and he probably won't manage to get there.

We got Newcastle scores today. Rejected with 59/70

:(

That must be just the wrong side of the cut off and would have got them an offer in any normal year 😥Well done for a great score though, even if it is bitter-sweet news.

Monkey, my point was more that local Universities seem to be quite good at supplying trusts with GPs and other doctors. Students who study in the area they live in, often stay on. Which is why, I assume Wales is trying to help ensure that Cardiff trains a good proportion of Welsh students, particular Welsh speaking students. My observation is that SGUL does similar, not necessarily by prioritising London applicants, but they seem to accept plenty and a good proportion seem to stay on the area to work. Though probably not for F1/F2.

I suspect there is an issue in that because of the points system high flying 3A* medics will mop up a lot of the London (and Bristol) F1/F2 places. DD is resigned to the fact that she is very unlikely to get any of her top choices. The thing is that as long as she gets the right training, the competition for jobs later on, when the high fliers have headed off for their consultancies in nice places with golf courses, becomes a lot less intense. My guess is that London raised or London trained medics then become a valuable resource when trying to fill London GP and other vacancies.

Can I ask if its allowed to accept your non medicine offer and then reject it on results day? Ds doesn't want to do pharmacy (he wants to take gap year and reapply) but should he miss the grades this year he wants to accept rather than do resits. Would there be any penalty/fees if he were to accept now then refuse when he gets his results? Not sure how this works..

mumsneedwine · 06/06/2022 17:41

@mubarak86 that would be totally fine. It's v common. Nothing lost as long as pull out before enrolment.

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 06/06/2022 17:44

@mubarak86 - There are no penalties for withdrawing your application on results day, or even for just not turning up on the first day of term, although the latter probably means you've deprived someone else of a place. The later you leave it, the more you have to sort out with Student Finance England, but UCAS has operated self-release into Clearing for the past couple of years: you no longer have to ask the university to release you. Once you're in Clearing you don't actually have to make an application if what you actually want to do is reapply for 2023. I'd advise against using the same institution/course as your fifth choice next year, although it's pretty unlikely anyone will spot that you pulled out last time.

mubarak86 · 06/06/2022 18:15

Thank you both. @NoNotHimTheOtherOne the issue is that he would be using it again next year. Do you think he shouldn't accept just in case?

mumsneedwine · 06/06/2022 18:36

@mubarak86 it will be v unlikely to make any difference. Most of my students have put the same 5th choice of had a year out, and all have got it again.

Yep. So near but yet so far

@mumsneedwine have your students accepted offers / declined places now?

mumsneedwine · 06/06/2022 19:13

@kackle yes. All firmed, insured or decided to try again next year. We've had a fairly successful year, although a few disappointments due to this tough year. Nearly all my students qualify for WP and most have been on outreach programs for a few years (we've got good at sourcing these !). Still got to get those grades though.
The one that made me cry ? One of our Syrian refugee kids, made his way here on his own at 14, took him a year and arrived speaking no English. And he's now off to become a doctor 😊. He intends to go back home to Syria once he's qualified. Not going to lie, I blubbed a lot when his offers came through.

@mumsneedwine I love stories like that 🥺

Monkey2001 · 07/06/2022 08:22

@mumsneedwine we loved your Syrian refugee story too, he sounds like an extraordinary young man - the interviewers' jaws must have dropped if he had to talk about resilience! I am sure your support must have helped too, your students are very lucky to have someone who knows what they are talking about to advise them!

@Monkey2001 😊 my students teach me so much about life. It's my privilege to help a little bit. As I'm also his Chemistry teacher I feel a v v big responsibility to get that A.
We have lots of different nationalities in school, and an increasing number of child refugees. It's tough. But I can now swear in several languages 😂😂

BabbleBee · 21/06/2022 10:14

Did anyone else’s DC sit the AQA Chem paper 2 yesterday that’s supposed to be leaked? DD was quite stressed yesterday, she’s had an email from her tutor this morning saying they’re preparing TAGs.

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 21/06/2022 13:09

If anyone suggests using TAGs for anything, universities will revolt.
