Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

I an praying now for movement in the next couple of weeks, hoping Newcastle make another batch of offers

fiftiesmum · 01/05/2022 19:06

Also if no offers then all the more reason to still work for those grades - then on results day it can't do any harm phoning the medical schools as there will be a fair few people who haven't met the offer (there were students on DD's course who got their places this way plus students who reapplied the following year armed with good grades and experience of work in hospitality or care settings)

olafolaf · 05/05/2022 13:58

All gone quiet (still waiting on UEA here plus waitlisted for HYMS). Is it worth DD contacting HYMS to see where she is in the waitlist do you think? When do offer holders have to confirm by - I get confused by all the different deadlines!

Monkey2001 · 05/05/2022 14:17

@olafolaf universities must process decisions on UCAS by 19th May, applicants have until 9th June to make their decisions.

I would say there is no harm in contacting HYMS, but it seems from TSR that they are one of the ones which will not tell you anything. I think there will be a general flurry of activity w/c 16th May. At least there will be some more clarity within the next 2 weeks, although some will be more transparent than others.

Best thing is to TRY not to think about it for the next 2 weeks as there is nothing you can do.

Ah thank you, that's so helpful. I think you are right, hold our nerve for the next 10 days or so! DD not that keen on contacting HYMS in case of jinxing anything Blush

We will be releasing UEA. Just waiting to see what gives with Newcastle before waitlist before 19/5

Monkey2001 · 05/05/2022 16:24

@kackle there are a lot of people in that position. It would be nice if the universities made offers next week so there was time for people to release more places to cascade through, then final batches on 18/19 May, but I am not optimistic!

I’m convinced Newcastle will take it down to the wire

MidLifeCrisis007 · 05/05/2022 19:20

DD says there's so much paper work involved when you firm an offer, it's like doing another A level! 😂

My thoughts and prayers are with all those waiting for an offer..... particularly @Monkey2001 's DS. Your moral support has meant a lot during this long drawn out application process @Monkey2001. Thank you. I SO hope your lad doesn't get forced into a gap year. Get on with it Newcastle!

Monkey2001 · 05/05/2022 22:13

Aw thanks @MidLifeCrisis007 Luckily as it happened to DS1 we can view the prospect of an unplanned gap year positively - not what he wants, but not a disaster.

Rejection from UEA this evening 😢 ashes being pragmatic but is understandably disappointed

Sorry to hear your news. Fingers crossed for HYMS for you x

coffeeandbiscuittime · 07/05/2022 07:31

Congratulations to all who have got offers and good luck for those firming places . Let's hope @Monkey2001's son gets bumped up to a place.
DD is resigned to a gap year, revising for her exams ( ie not doing much round the house as she is revising🤣).
Whilst discussing options and looking through indeed , she sent her cv to a care home - interview on Monday. Even if not successful it is interview practice in the real world.
As a parent I am not looking forward to going through the whole process again - so I do feel sorry for the kids. I will soon be on @opoponax new thread!

kackle · 09/05/2022 19:27

@Monkey2001 I rang Newcastle today. They are still in no position to make any further offers.

That can't really be true! They only have a week before they have to either offer or reject all the people on Hold. I think they must just be putting that answer out, but planning more offers within the next 10 days.

@coffeeandbiscuittime is your DD on hold anywhere other than Sheffield? I need to work out who I am crossing fingers for on this thread!

I realised this evening that if DS is on a waiting list after 19th May and can't accept by the 9th June deadline he will go to the bottom of the pile for accommodation. Think he might apply for Sports Exercise Science and Firm that if he gets an offer and Newcastle let him stay on medicine waiting list with another Newcastle offer firmed.

sydenhamhiller · 09/05/2022 20:24

Whoop - DS got bumped from Queens Belfast waiting list to offer of AAA.

It’s not really an insurance: it’s AAA like Leeds’ AAA, but DS pleased to feel wanted…

Good luck to everyone waiting: a good friend’s daughter has offers for classics from 4 of choices, just hanging on for Durham!

Thats a good idea.

i saw on TSR tonight that Plymouth have told all those on their waitlist that they wont have a place for them and will be rejected next week :(

i just cant see everyone who has a Newcastle offer accepting it. As you said, perhaps they are just playing cards close to their chest.

Will done @sydenhamhiller DS, nice to feel wanted even if he already has one he likes better.

My DD has accepted an offer from Southampton and is delighted (I’m very relieved). Post interview for Nottingham she was told she did not have a place but could opt in to be considered if a place came up. Given she doesn’t have an insurance offer she opted in. Last night they emailed to say she could only stay on this “wait list” if she rejected all offers she holds but they could not guarantee her a place. What is this madness??? Clearly this is a ridiculous gamble she is not going to take but this doesn’t feel right to me.

Haffdonga · 10/05/2022 09:50

Yes that sounds so unfair @labsareace.
I really don't know how the unis can calculate their exact offer to place ratio at this stage with so many unaccepted offers still out there. Ds for example is very fortunate to be sitting on 4 offers and refuses to make up his mind until he's visited all 4 unis. Unfortunately (well fortunately for him) he's going abroad for 2 weeks now, so his Bristol visit will be at the very last weekend before 9th June at which point he'll obviously be releasing 3 places for his not accepted unis.
I am pushing him to make his mind up sooner with people like monkey and kackle in mind, but he is getting annoyed with me being an interfering mother. He's an independent adult so I hold zero sway I'm afraid!

Thats the issue with the system this year.

A complete Mexican standoff for all concerned on the waitlists who cant release what they have for universities that are their backups.

Fully expect a rejection from Newcastle at this stage as there seems to be little movement anywhere

Hope your Ds has a lovely trio abroad, plenty of chill tine and lots of sun x

Monkey2001 · 10/05/2022 11:52

Hmm, so Plymouth and Nottingham have both drawn a line. Somebody said that Newcastle wanted to talk to the other medical schools before deciding what to do next, I suppose it is possible that they have agreed to wait for 9th June or results day, but surely they will want to ensure they have at least as many offer holders as they have places when they reject on UCAS by 19th May?

Logically it is bad for @kackle's DC but good for people like us without any offers if lots of medical schools do it this way, as the waiting lists will be slashed by losing the ones with other offers. Oh well, we have waited 4 months since interview, we will know in just over 3 months!
