Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Monkey2001 · 27/01/2022 14:26

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

Great to hear about some more offers. Good luck with the decision making.

Great news!

please let us know if he does decline Newcastle. Both I and @Monkey2001 are holding on for a Newcastle place for our Dc from the waitlist

Thanks for the kind and magnanimous wishes when I know you and Monkey are on tenterhooks holding out for Newcastle. I have to tell you that I'm fairly strongly advising ds against Bristol as opposed to Newcastle simply because of the difference in accommodation costs. As a second time around grad every penny will make a difference. But hey, he never listens to me so we'll have to wait and see.

Monkey2001 · 28/04/2022 23:37

@Haffdonga I think I would be advising anyone concerned about costs to be aware of accommodation costs in Bristol. We live in Bristol, it is a great city and both DSs would love to come back to it one day, but it is certainly a lot more expensive than Newcastle!

Haff, though there are advantages in that placement accommodation is provided free of charge. DD won’t have needed anywhere in Bristol for her final 18 months. Do PM if your DS has questions, and I will try to get answers. He might also look at senior resident positions in halls. Quite a lot of grad medics seem to do this.

Haffdonga · 29/04/2022 15:40

Thanks @Needmoresleep . Ds is going to stay with a friend in Bristol and check it all out next week. If he's serious about choosing it we'll have a few questions for you and your dd.
I've just done a comparative search on Right move. For the cost of a decent 1 or 2 bedroom flat in Jesmond (student area of Newcastle) you can buy an underground garage in Bristol and that's pretty much it. Shock

MidLifeCrisis007 · 29/04/2022 18:23

DD is delighted to have secured an Exeter offer today!

She loved the city when we visited in December and can't wait to start in September!

Monkey2001 · 29/04/2022 19:10

Whoop whoop@MidLifeCrisis007 , told you she would! Great relief all round.

Congrats @MidLifeCrisis007 my ds is finishing 4th year at Exeter. Let me know if any questions!

opoponax · 29/04/2022 19:20

Great news @MidLifeCrisis007 and well done that girl. Most definitely worth the wait 😊

notmedicmum · 29/04/2022 20:53

Congratulations @MidLifeCrisis007 DD! Exeter was her top choice, wasn’t it?

KingscoteStaff · 29/04/2022 21:48

That's brilliant @MidLifeCrisis007 - lots of lovely West Country weekends for you!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 30/04/2022 07:54

Thank you for the lovely responses.... which I have shared with DD. She knows I lurk here!

She is chuffed to pieces. Yes, Exeter was her first choice from the moment we visited at the end of last year. (She loved St Andrews too but that's a 6 year course, 3 of which in London.... but sadly St Andrews didn't love her!).

HoneyMobster · 30/04/2022 07:57

Wonderful news @MidLifeCrisis007 - what a relief for her ahead of exam season.

PritiPatelsMaker · 30/04/2022 08:28

So pleased for you and your DD @MidLifeCrisis007 Smile

kackle · 30/04/2022 11:54

great news @MidLifeCrisis007

CharlieSJ · 01/05/2022 05:46

After three rejections DS has just received an offer from Anglia Ruskin. He is delighted and relieved. Anyone here with DC with an offer from Anglia Ruskin or who have DC there?

Monkey2001 · 01/05/2022 09:48

Congratulations @CharlieSJ , lovely to see offers cascading down as, presumably, the people who are best at interviews choose their Firm/Insurance.

Fantastic news @CharlieSJ - great feeling, isn't it?!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 01/05/2022 14:42

@CharlieSJ - fab news. The ARU facilities look amazing!

mumsneedwine · 01/05/2022 15:13

Never has 'you only need one offer' been more true 😊. Well done on the offers coming through. Let's hope the next few weeks provide some more so everyone has one 🤞🤞.
And ARU is a stunning new medical school with fab facilities.

fiftiesmum · 01/05/2022 15:26

As a mum from a previous version of this thread your DC's will be going through all of this again in 5/6 years time - then two years later and again two/three years after that. Although at that stage at least they will be certain of a place but will not know where or what they will be doing. DD is still not certain where she will be working from August.

Monkey2001 · 01/05/2022 16:14

@fiftiesmum yes, I see it as a great big game of musical chairs. At the beginning there is a mad dash as there are not enough chairs to go round, usually there are people 11 chairs for 16 people, this year there are about 8 chairs for 20 people - it really is that much worse than usual! Then there are future rounds of musical chairs, where there are enough chairs, but some are lovely comfy ones and others are rickety broken ones and you can't fully control which you get!

Does your DD know her ranking to help give her an idea of whether she is likely to get one of her top choices?

OP posts:
fiftiesmum · 01/05/2022 16:32

DD has reached the ST3+ stage so it is more a case of make your choices and they call to discuss if you don't get selected for your top three. Can involve going to somewhere remote for three or four months - Isle of Wight if you are Southampton based or Southend if you are london based. Her fiancé is in a similar position but many more options open ie same three rotations but different order.
The good thing is they both still enjoy what they are doing.

CharlieSJ · 01/05/2022 16:46

Thank you @Monkey2001, @Haffdonga, @kackle, @mumsneedwine, @MidLifeCrisis007 for your kind words, your words brought a tear to me eyes, it has been an anxious time. And @ yes it is a great feeling! I am hoping that the offers start coming in fast for all of those still waiting.
