Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

Waiting lists have always only been open if not holding an offer. It ensures Universities can have some certainty that an accepted offer is going to be taken up. Hopefully it will also mean waiting lists become very short and so there is more movement.
I really do think medicine is going to be in clearing this year.

speedyhedgehog · 10/05/2022 14:45

@labsareace ds was at southampton offer holders day last weekend and loved it. All being well on results day he'll be heading there too. @kackle is one of the offers your dc is holding edinburgh? My dd is there just finishing up her 2nd year if you had any questions. Sorry looks like newcastle might not come through for you and @monkey2001s ds. This year has been awful. Its not fair for them to be starting exams still in limbo. I've heard from friends this is happening
with some other courses too. Many congratulations all those with offers and everything crossed for those on waitlists that things start moving soon.

fiftiesmum · 10/05/2022 14:48

IIRC medicine did have clearing places a couple of times pre-pandemic in the years between stopping the modular a-levels where students applied with four good AS levels and marks under their belt, and 2020 when grades shot up. Perhaps this year grades will be less predictable

Hi.

Yes we have a medicine offer for Edinburgh

holding out for Newcastle as applied via partners and a BBB offer.

Edinburgh is my home town so my heart says Edinburgh, my head says take the lower Newcastle place if offered.

Which halls did your daughter live in in year one? Any she would recommend or advise to avoid please?

x

notmedicmum · 10/05/2022 17:28

@speedyhedgehog we were at the offer holders day in Southampton last weekend too!

speedyhedgehog · 10/05/2022 17:32

She was in Salisbury Court. She wouldn't choose Beaverbank because it was so far away. But now they have free bus passes which helps. She would choose location over room for sure.

kackle · 10/05/2022 17:37

Its salisbury court we are looking at. We went and had a little look around it- its lovely. And almost equidistant between Bristo Square and NRIE.

Beaverbank and those near Leith walk, meadowbank etc are too far

Also looking at Brae House, o’Shea North and Morgan Court

speedyhedgehog · 10/05/2022 18:03

@notmedicmum how did you find it? Ds went with his dad so I still haven't visited.
@kackle I think dd has the same idea, she really appreciates being as central as possible. They had hardly any in person in her first year so no input on travelling for that! She did enjoy salisbury though, its nice and clean and secure. She's not far away from central this year either, a bit in between salisbury and the meadows.

notmedicmum · 10/05/2022 18:38

@speedyhedgehog well I was a student there many many years ago so I am biased! I think the best bit for DD was meeting and being able to question current medical students. All unanimously said that Glen Eyre vs Wessex Lane was better for medical students for accommodation.

speedyhedgehog · 10/05/2022 23:47

@notmedicmum good to know re Glen Eyre. Glad you loved it there while you were a student too!

kackle · 11/05/2022 19:17

@Monkey2001 did you get the Newcastle hold email?

what do you make of it?

Monkey2001 · 11/05/2022 23:20

@kackle yes. I don't really make anything of it as it just said people would have a decision on UCAS by 19th May. I still think they will need to make quite a few more offers, at least 50, so I think at least 25% of the remaining wait list will get offers, but most will just be on a waiting list until results day. There is a lot of guessing in my predictions though!

Does anyone have any figures wrt how many non offer holders get an offer the next year?

There is data on UCAS about re-applicants. www.ucas.com/data-and-analysis/undergraduate-statistics-and-reports/ucas-undergraduate-releases/applicant-releases-2022-cycle/2022-cycle-applicant-figures-15-october-deadline

There is also end of cycle data about offers, but it a pain to navigate.

I don't have any figures, but if you want some inspiration see this thread on TSR:

www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7209108

It is headed 2022 Medicine Gap Year Stories! and it has a whole bunch of successful gap year applicants talking about not getting in last year, what they have done with their gap year, and how much better they have done this year.

kackle · 15/05/2022 12:17

Four days to ucas deadline. I have my fingers crossed for all our dc waiting for a place from the waitlist

mumsneedwine · 15/05/2022 13:05

I've sent a v snotty letter to UCAS giving them my 'thoughts' on not moving the deadline forward this year. Some of my students have an exam on 18th and May also may get a bunch of rejections on the same day (3 are on 4 wait lists). It's made me a bit cross for all these poor hard working, caring kids who have been treated so poorly.
Good luck to everyone still waiting. And best wishes for the exams.

coffeemorecoffee · 16/05/2022 12:07

Just to say, still waiting on Keele. OMG. Interview was in January.

kackle · 16/05/2022 16:01

@Monkey2001 few partners offers released today. Nothing here though

Monkey2001 · 16/05/2022 16:28

Yes @kackle , they are stretching this out! Anxious couple of days ahead.

@coffeemorecoffee I think Keele had a particular problem because they had an unprecedented number of applicants, and because they have to read them all, they have struggled to get through them. It used to be like that at Bristol until they switched from being all about PS to straight UCAT. Can't be long now.

Advice needed please from you wise ladies. DS finally had a rejection today from KMMS. He was interviewed on 12 Jan - its been a long wait. He got AAB in his A -levels last year so Kent was the only uni he could apply for. He has 4 pharmacy offers but since working in a GP surgery since September he’s even more determined medicine is what he wants to do, not pharmacy. His GP colleagues are being very encouraging and advising him to take another year out and reapply. Is there any way he can apply apart from to Kent again? GCSEs 9,8,777777,6,5. Ukat 2750ish and band 2. Not really sure what to advise him to do. Any thoughts much appreciated. Well done to all those dcs with offers and commiserations to those coming out of the long tortuous process without an offer.

Is there not a possibility of him resitting the A level he got a B in?

Lots of medical schools, I believe, take resits (I think there is a list on TSR somewhere). That would give him far more options than just KMMS (I don't know if they will take reapplications either, some do, some don't).

But IMHO it seems crazy to take another year out just to pin one's hope on a solitary medical school, even if they allow reapplications, when you could have the option of four by resitting. Surely if he focussed on the one A level he could bring his grade up to an A or even an A*?

Monkey2001 · 17/05/2022 01:18

@GladysGeorgina yes, the obvious thing is a resit. Or does he meet WP criteria anywhere - at Bristol as long as he has an A for Chem, most state school offers are AAB. Sheffield and HYMS are AAB with an A/A* in EPQ.

OP posts:
Monkey2001 · 17/05/2022 01:20

Sorry, meant Bristol is AAC/ABB.
State school and BAME or part BAME is BBB at Newcastle with Partners

OP posts:
GladysGeorgina · 17/05/2022 04:56

Thanks for the replies. B is in chemistry. No EPQ, not BAME and he’s from a good state secondary. DS definitely talking about a resit. How would an application work if he already has 2 As and is aiming for a third A/A* but will take the exam next summer? It’s such a minefield.
