Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

And congratulations @ugiflezet!

Monkey2001 · 03/03/2022 00:19

@Solarlantern I know just how you feel! A gap year can beat very positive thing even if they didn't know they wanted one! Smile. HUGE congrats 🎉

Joining you for handholding. My DS, year 13, is waiting for decision. It is a difficult process and hope he gets in.

Needmoresleep · 03/03/2022 09:10

I thought I would come back to agree that gap years can be good and provide a useful break between school and a long and intensive course. DD does not regret hers at all, and reports that several of her peers are envious of her having had the chance to spread her wings a bit before starting University.

I also wanted to tell those who are still waiting to hang on in there. DD had three interviews in March which led to two offers. A friends DS was put on a wait list late, and then contacted in the summer by another med school who had previously rejected him and invited for an interview.

That said, it does not take away from the agony of waiting, nor the difficulty of studying to get the best grades possible whilst in limbo. Fingers crossed for all the DC in that position.

Solarlantern · 03/03/2022 10:07

Thanks all! I have fingers crossed for all for more decisions to come out soon. The waiting is so difficult.
@Needmoresleep I agree that a gap year can be really useful (even if it's an enforced one!). Once my DS was resigned to the fact he'd have no offers last year he sorted out a couple of roles, including volunteering on e.g. respiratory/geriatric wards and a paid job working with a real cross section of people (older patients, refugees, in schools etc); all good experience and useful to show resilience/dealing with difficult patients etc.
Although it was hard seeing all his friends go off to uni and make new friends, we can see how it has improved his confidence dealing with people outside his usual experience and having to work long shift hours with staff coming from a real range of backgrounds/age. He found the re-applicants group on TSR v useful - it's good to know others are in the same boat as it can feel like everyone else is sorted otherwise especially for students who are used to always achieving in exams etc.

Second batch of offers sent out by KMMS yesterday but not one for DS. I believe they sent four batches last year so still hope. DS has a pharmacy place at Nottingham if no med school applications but is now starting to mention Paramedic Science. He’s currently working at a GP surgery and is getting to know more about other hcps. Medicine is his dream though. The waiting is just painful……

GladysGeorgina · 03/03/2022 12:14

Med school offers not applications

notmedicmum · 03/03/2022 12:54

It’s great to hear about all the positive gap year experiences. The DC have had such a tough time over the last 2 years plus as someone mentioned, medical is quite intensive, so not a bad thing to step back for a year. Does anyone know anecdotally what proportion of those who do gap years get offers? @Monkey2001 maybe - you seem to know so much!

Haffdonga · 03/03/2022 15:15

2 offers for ds today - Newcastle and Leicester. Over the moon!!!

Hold the faith those who are waiting. I know the suspense is bloody agony as a mum, let alone for the applicants themselves. I've been avoiding this thread myself because it's tough hearing of offers coming in for others and still being in limbo wondering if ...

Sending calming wishes to everyone!

notmedicmum · 03/03/2022 16:04

Congratulations @Haffdonga’s ds!

Monkey2001 · 03/03/2022 17:06

Wow @Haffdonga - a good day then! Well done DS!

KingscoteStaff · 03/03/2022 18:20

That’s brilliant @Haffdonga - Newcastle has come through for DD too!

Last year’s thread had offers coming out all the way to May and beyond, so this is really only the beginning.

Haffdonga · 03/03/2022 19:35

Thanks everyone and congratulations to your dd too @KingscoteStaff Grin

Iwab82 · 03/03/2022 19:54

Well done those with offers, must be an amazing feeling. All interviews complete so just waiting and hoping at our end. Think I am more stressed than my son is!!

HoneyMobster · 03/03/2022 20:18

More offers! Well done @Haffdonga and @KingscoteStaff . Still waiting for Newcastle her but DD has kindly agreed to let me her accompany her to the Offer Holder's Day at Oxford so that's enough good news for one day 😊

Monkey2001 · 03/03/2022 20:34

Well done @KingscoteStaff. I think you said that was her top choice, so celebrations in your household tonght!

I wish they told everyone together, watching all these offers you can't help losing hope a bit! A fiend of DS's got an ABB offer today although she lives on a very smart road and went to good state schools. Strange!

@Monkey2001 I hear you - I am very happy for all those that have got a place but I do think they need a date where all offers are made - it is a horrendous wait for the students ( and parents).
Good luck to all those waiting and huge congratulations to all who have got offers.

kackle · 03/03/2022 21:51

Still waiting for Newcastle (partners) here. Lots of partners offers already made. Doesnt look hopeful. Dc distraught

wishiwasacollie · 04/03/2022 07:14

Hi All. Edinburgh offer here so much relief. She has Dundee as well which is her favourite. I agree with all the comments about having a day when all offers come out. It's horrible seeing what they go through waiting. Thank you for all the help and advice. I lurked and didn't contribute as didn't feel I could give advice. However having gone through it all can help those applying next year. Well at least talk about what we did. We were so worried as had no medical contacts no courses but got any experience we could which DD enjoyed so was able to talk with enthusiasm. What a year. UCAT .....She went through it not me but what a year

Thank you all again

kackle · 04/03/2022 09:29

@wishiwasacollie congrats. We have an Edinburgh offer too but desperately want Newcastle. Its so hard watching others get offers

HoneyMobster · 04/03/2022 11:25

DD got a Newcastle offer 😊

KingscoteStaff · 04/03/2022 16:13

Fantastic news @HoneyMobster - well done her!

I have tried to ask the Newcastle chat bot about offer holder days, but it didn’t know/couldn’t say/was overwhelmed…
