Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

Literally as I typed that Newcastle got back to me - offer holder days are 6th April (virtual) and 9th/13th April (in person).

Monkey2001 · 04/03/2022 17:06

DS on hold for Newcastle, sigh! It was his best interview so not at all hopeful for Manchester. I am hopeful that there will be a fair number of offers for people on hold and that as he will not be holding any other offers, he can stay on the hold list for longer than many.

We are staying positive, it could have been a rejection!

On hold for Newcastle. Heartbroken. Dc sobbing

HoneyMobster · 04/03/2022 18:34

Sorry to hear about the 'holds' for Newcastle @kackle and @Monkey2001.

Do you think it's as a result if them having to be ultra cautious to avoid over offering this year? Is this something that's happened in previous years?

coffeeandbiscuittime · 05/03/2022 07:31

Thank you @Monkey2001 for the support you have given on these threads. Sorry to hear re Newcastle but hopefully he will still get offered a place soon. Which other ones is he waiting for?
Looking at TSR last night they sounded positive ( albeit cautious) about the holding offers so there may still be hope @kackle .
One quick question- Does this mean people don't firm until all offers are in? As their favourite may be a hold one and may turn into a late offer? Is there a date they have to decide by?

Dagbonunion · 05/03/2022 08:23

Offer from BSMS for DD.Good luck to everyone one here as they all deserve it.

Monkey2001 · 05/03/2022 08:44

@coffeeandbiscuittime the universities have until 19th May to make offers. The applicants have until 9th June to decide which offers to firm/insure. Some will want to make decisions quickly as accommodation is allocated first come/first served, others will want to wait until all decisions are in. Even if the ones they are waiting for are not their top choices, many people want to know whether they would have got an offer as they have invested so much effort in the process.

A lot of decisions will be out by end of March so I would expect that there will be some people deciding then, and some waiting list places will be released, then they will trickle on through April/May as candidates decide.

Then 9th June people will have to decide which offers to accept. That is difficult for people on the waiting list for their top choice, but with offers for others. @kackle DD may be in this position, if she accepts Edinburgh she can't remain on Newcastle waiting list. Because my DS did the wrong A levels he only applied to Newcastle and Manchester with a foundation year so, in the unlikely event that he gets a Manchester offer, he would probably decline it anyway and keep everything crossed for Newcastle. At that point there will be many fewer people on the waiting list so everyone left moves up. There should then be a batch of offers because all applicants have made decisions.

The final opportunity for waiting list people is results day, but as we know grades will be generous, we would not be very hopeful about that.

Congratulations @Dagbonunion

Yep. I agree with you. At the moment its Edinburgh and its a great uni and a real privilege to get an offer there. We have advised that they should now plan to go to Edinburgh and IF Newcastle come through we will reassess.

I’m hopeful of some movement after 31/3 so maybe all isn’t lost

All the best to your son, Manchester is a fab city too.

And big congrats to all those holding offers x

FanSpamTastic · 05/03/2022 12:24

DD was on hold for Bristol and it has now been converted to an offer! She is so pleased as she thought it would be unlikely to go anywhere and would end up as a rejection. So don't write off those hold places! It's her favourite so I don't think she will change even if any more offers come in. She was also on hold for Newcastle.

HoneyMobster · 05/03/2022 12:29

Lovely news @FanSpamTastic - how long was it between interview and offer at Bristol? DD's was only 12 days ago and I think we shouldn't hear until at least 21 days.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 05/03/2022 16:05

4 interviewed from DD's school for Bristol on the 1st day of interviews (10 Jan) - UCATS 3190, 3190, 3240, 3250 IIRC.

None have heard back yet.

HoneyMobster · 05/03/2022 16:47

I seem to remember that after using the UCAT to select for interview Bristol doesn't use them again (except for tie breaks). How is your DD doing @MidLifeCrisis007 ?

Dagbonunion · 05/03/2022 17:25

@MidLifeCrisis007 those are fantastic scores and will definitely get offers

bitsbots · 05/03/2022 17:32

Congratulations! @FanSpamTastic

1 interviewed from DS's school for Bristol in early Jan, UCATS 3000+ was put on hold and then rejected few days ago. DS interviewed in early Feb, hasn't heard any thing yet, not on hold either. He's just trying to focus on mock exams, I'm the one who's suffering panic attacks!

opoponax · 05/03/2022 17:50

It's all about the interview performance once the UCAT has been used for interview selection at Bristol. The clock resets to zero and it's all about interview performance. Last year there didn't seem to be much correlation between interview and offer dates. One DC in my DS's year group booked their interview late on to avoid mocks and had an offer in less than a week. Others with earlier interviews had longer to wait before getting a decision.

opoponax · 05/03/2022 17:57

@bitsbots last year being put on hold by Bristol didn't seem to mean that much at all. Some were moved to hold at different stages in the process and others were just left with no response. Both groups ended up getting both offers and rejections so it didn't seem to indicate anything.

bitsbots · 05/03/2022 18:12

@opoponax thanks for the information, I can take a break from overthinking then!

opoponax · 05/03/2022 18:18

@bitsbots It's hard not to overthink it. I certainly did last year. I hope your DS gets good news soon.

bitsbots · 05/03/2022 18:53

@opoponax thanks! it's good to have you around, really helpfulFlowers

FanSpamTastic · 05/03/2022 20:28

Sorry been out all day. DD's interview was the last she had - in last week of January. I think she got the hold notice around mid Feb and then it changed to offer on Friday.

Monkey2001 · 06/03/2022 10:07

Well done @FanSpamTastic DD!

I quite like the Bristol system - it seems to me that they aim to get back to everyone within 3 weeks of interview with an offer if they did so well that they will definitely be over the cut off, a rejection if it is clear they will be below the cut off, hold if it depends on where the cut off ends up. I think a Hold at Bristol is very different from a Hold at Newcastle as Newcastle have definitely given out more offers than Bristol.

I like a bit of transparency, I think they should all tell applicants their interview scores once they have moderated the interviews, then you would know roughly where you stood. If we knew DS just missed the cut off and was likely to get an offer, or if we even knew how many offers they have made so far, it would help!

Agree 100%

Its going to a long wait to see if we get a place via Newcastle wait list

opoponax · 06/03/2022 13:36

@Monkey2001 I agree that the Bristol system is fine when it works like you describe but I don't think it always does. DS and a few friends were in the same situation to Midlife's DD last year. Invited to interview really early and then nothing, not even Hold, when the initial offer batches came out. Looking back, DS didn't have that long to wait but two of his friends had radio silence for quite a while longer and it was really tough for them. I really liked the Sheffield process, so transparent and their communication was great from start to finish. Everyone knew when they would hear about an offer or rejection and it was all over in a few days.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 07/03/2022 09:02

So hopefully Sheffield will release offers/waits/rejections this week. Not sure my nerves can hold! Although she is not expecting an offer , she/we have still got hope that she may.
Good luck to all.

KingscoteStaff · 07/03/2022 10:44

Rumours that Barts will be out this week too.
