Medicine 2022 - Decision time!

Monkey2001 · 27/01/2022 14:26

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!
@kackle - would you DC prefer Newcastle over Edinburgh then?
Not sure. Didnt think we would get Edinburgh so its put cat amongst pigeons

Newcastle is his favourite. The waiting for a decision is just awful

KingscoteStaff · 02/03/2022 08:29

DD is fast developing finger RSI from continually refreshing the TSR Newcastle thread.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 02/03/2022 08:32

Good lucky DC of @kackle and@Monkey2001 for Newcastle. Well done @KingscoteStaff for the offers.
It is an awful wait and like others my DD is preparing mentally to take a gap year although really hoping she gets an offer.
She cried in one of her interviews and didn't think the other 2 went well so we will see.

opoponax · 02/03/2022 09:09

@coffeeandbiscuittime I hope your DD does get an offer but gap years can work out well. DS has friends who are reapplying this year. They say it has actually worked out really well for them and they found the process so much easier second time round with no A Levels running in parallel. They each already have a couple of offers in the bag and are enjoying their year too.

notmedicmum · 02/03/2022 11:15

That’s great to know @opoponax. We had a similar experience for one of our interviews @coffeeandbiscuittime, the interviewers were so disinterested and unsympathetic. Guess it builds resilience Smile. Suggestions on what to do for a productive gap year gratefully received - in case we need to take up that option!

Monkey2001 · 02/03/2022 11:24

@coffeeandbiscuittime someone who cried in their interview got an offer on TSR yesterday, I can't remember which medical school it was, they are really picking up now and it is not possible to keep up unless you spend a ridiculous amount of time on there!

I got an offer for Newcastle GEM. I'm stunned. I'd resigned myself to rejection.

BabbleBee · 02/03/2022 11:45

Congratulations to all with offers.
@coffeeandbiscuittime good luck wishes coming your way Cake

DD has just got invitation to Keele interview for the end of March.

BabbleBee · 02/03/2022 11:46

Congratulations @ugifletzet

Drumming fingers for Nottingham here, but trying not to let DD know how much time I’m spending on TSR! DD’s last chance of an offer for this year

MommyP · 02/03/2022 13:04

congratulations to those who have already received offers! new bee here, my DD has not received any interview to date for medicine entry 2022..keeping fingers crossed with some hope! would you know the last date by when one can expect an interview and the final offers? Are all medicine offers concluded by 31st March?

KingscoteStaff · 02/03/2022 13:14

That's great news @BabbleBee - all the feedback from the Keele interviews has been really positive!

Wannago · 02/03/2022 13:53

Hi @MommyP - it depends on the universities to which she has applied. I think there might be some that might be interviewing later and 31st March, but not really sure, and others have definitely finished interviewing already. If you can tell us the medical school' names, somebody on here might be able to give you better information. In terms of offers, in theory they can offer up to the UCAS deadline (and beyond, although usually beyond would be from a waiting list). But they won't offer without interview, so unfortunately if no interview, then no offer.
MommyP · 02/03/2022 14:28

thanks for the details @Wannago. I know UCL has some interview dates in march, but more so I am looking for if anyone is still waiting for an interview from Leeds? thanks

The TSR thread:

www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7089696&page=49

Has a lot of people confused about what Leeds are doing, and waiting for interviews. They seem to have sent out some, and then stopped for the last 2-4 weeks. Some have speculated that it might be to do with university staff strikes. The suggestion on there is that virtually no graduates or A2L have received interviews yet, which would seem to suggest they are (must be) still interviewing. When people email them, they say that interviews will be happening January to March, but it seems to be an automatic reply. There are a lot of very frustrated candidates on there.

bimkom · 02/03/2022 14:46

Also the KCL thread on TSR seems to suggest that Kings will be interviewing until April, so it would seem that not everybody is finishing by the end of March.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 02/03/2022 15:07

Thanks to all for the good wishes. I don't think a gap year will do any harm - if she does take one then I think she might do swimming teaching ( she already coaches).

@ugifletzet brilliant news - you only applied to Newcastle didn't you - you must have shone, at least you can now go forward with your plans.

HoneyMobster · 02/03/2022 15:26

DD had technical difficulties issues with her Leeds interview and had to abandon it half way through. She then sat the second half a couple of weeks later. I think it's been a tricky process for many people so may well have delayed them.

I have to say it has put her right off Leeds. Newcastle, Oxford and Bristol were so much slicker.

MommyP · 02/03/2022 15:43

thanks all for much info on Leeds, can very well appreciate the frustration to wait for that one email every day, hopefully things will fall in place soon! @HoneyMobster, sorry to hear your DD's experience during Leeds interview, wish her the best, and fingers crossed for the outcome day.

Solarlantern · 02/03/2022 16:53

Newcastle offer for DS here - so pleased for him after having to take a gap year although I think in hindsight it's been good for him to get some good work and volunteering experience. He's over the moon as it's one of his top choices - as is DH and my DF as they both went there back in the day Grin.
Fingers crossed the offers are now slowly starting to come in for others too!

Congrats on Newcastle offer. We still havent heard anything

The waiting is torture

HoneyMobster · 02/03/2022 19:14

Congrats to @Solarlantern ! DD reports a Newcastle offer at school today (non contextual).

KingscoteStaff · 02/03/2022 19:22

@Solarlantern What brilliant news! I bet all his Gap year experience will be massively beneficial in all sorts of ways!

Opoponax · 02/03/2022 19:51

@ugifletzet that's amazing. GEM too. You must have done amazing.

@Solarlantern huge congratulations. I think I remember you from last year. Another great gap year success story. Happy to share DS's Newcastle experience if you have any questions. Just PM me.
