New thread for us, lots of lovely support whilst we wait. Some of our lovely DC now have interview dates whilst the rest of us hold our breath and try not to hassle our teens into checking their SPAM folders at least several times per day Grin.

Dd has got an interview for economics at Cambridge.
She already has offers for Bristol and York and is happy about this

MillicentFaucet · 25/11/2021 13:36

Aw thanks for all the nice messages everyone, DS had made plans to go Christmas shopping with DS2 tomorrow because he thought it was a no go. I've told him that Fenwicks will still be there when he's done.

ealingwestmum · 25/11/2021 13:39

That’ll be a lovely day to spend inset day with that small morning interruption Smile well done to him Millicent

And to your DD Lampzade

MillicentFaucet · 25/11/2021 13:40

@JulesJules

Oh that's brilliant Millicent Faucet well done him. Have been keeping my fingers crossed so hard for him.
How did you see through my cunning disguise J? Will need to meet up for de-stress gin soon mate x
PermanentTemporary · 25/11/2021 14:17

Late to read these but great news @MillicentFaucet and @Panicmode1.

I was able to see a couple of friends' children last night and was just thinking again what a fantastic bunch of teenagers I know. Extrapolating out, they're a top year and a top generation, lots of gentleness, pragmatism and stoicism about.

Good luck to all those with interviews. Just wanted to add that it is good for DC not to get upset / flustered / worried about being pooled during the Oxford interview process. DS was pooled last year after applying to Worcester College, and the second college he interviewed with ended up offering him a place. He loves his college now, and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. People always say that students are usually quite happy with the college they end up in , and that has certainly been the case for him.

Agreed. DD knew in advance she'd be interviewed by a second Oxford college last year, and has no regrets now about not being at the one she applied for. There was also the possibility of a third interview, and she was convinced they'd reject her when that one never materialised, having for whatever reason concluded she must be on some kind of 'marginals' list. But (I'll say this again for nail-biting newcomers to the thread) it was well into December before invitations were sent out for her subject, presumably due to the large number of applicants for a fairly small number of places.

A lovely colleague heard today that his DS has an interview at John's C for Economics. The dad was getting a bit fed up of the wait, and having seen the stories here, I didn't want to pee on his parade. Today the dad is all smiles and so excited. Bless!

goodbyestranger · 25/11/2021 18:07

Malbec DD2's ex bf was a young Economics tutor at one of the large central Cambridge colleges and interviewed there. He talked to me extensively about what went on in terms of questions asked, what they looked for, which schools they felt wildly exaggerated their students' potential etc etc. He'd done his DPhil at Oxford and interviewed for a few years there too. He much preferred the Oxford system of selection - very, very different from Cambridge. Good luck to this particular DS.

OxanaVorontsova · 25/11/2021 18:08

Congratulations @MillicentFaucet @Panicmode1 @Lampzade what a relief!

PermanentTemporary · 25/11/2021 18:12

Oh that's interesting goodbyestranger. I imagined almost more variation between colleges than between the universities.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 25/11/2021 18:36

OOh, interviews starting to come in thick and fast now! Congratulations to all the kids who've got one. And commiserations to those who are disappointed. Even though as an adult you know it'll all work out ok for them in the end wherever they go.

cosmiccat · 25/11/2021 20:57

Finally and at what seems like the eleventh hour DD has got an interview at C for maths. Ecstatically happy for her and even if she gets no further at least I know she will have had a chance to show her abilities. A huge relief ...for now.

ealingwestmum · 25/11/2021 21:13

That’s great cosmiccat, she must be delighted.

kitnkaboodle · 25/11/2021 21:14

I stopped looking at this thread for a few days as the tension was affecting me. But happy to announce that after blithely ignoring Oxbridge-related social media for a week, both my DSs got invited to interview today. DS1 for Oxford, DS2 for Cambridge. Both Engineering. Shout out to other engineering parents:
@Panicmode1 @mich101 @Gardenia22 @CurlyhairedAssassin @TupilaLilium @printmeanicephoto
So many this year - usually it's all History and English!
I wanted to tell those whose DC have been rejected that this time last year I was down in the kitchen listening to DS1 sobbing upstairs after being rejected without interview. He has had a long and chequered journey here and is nearly 20. But he's tried for Oxford a second time and got past the hurdle he fell at before Smile. DS2 is the more conventional applicant - 17, straight A*s, etc. DS1 definitely does not have a raft of perfect grades, so they must just have been intrigued by him. I'd definitely say a second go is worth it if you have the time and inclination. Keep me posted, engineers ....

TomelettewithGreggs · 25/11/2021 21:25

Thanks @Valleyofthedollymix for your kind words; what a great name!
Congratulations to everyone with interviews, but particularly to your persistent DS @kitnkaboodle.

TupilaLilium · 25/11/2021 21:38

My son did not get an interview for engineering at Cambridge. He had about 8 A and 3 A at GSCE and four predicted A at levels so he must have flubbed the engaa.

He is fine. He wasn’t set on Cambridge. He felt he should apply. He is set on imperial and we’ve heard nothing about interview the for m eng mechanical engineering so that is the new worry.

He has an offer at Bristol that will be fab.

What a strange year.

Panicmode1 · 25/11/2021 21:50

@TupilaLilium so sorry to hear that - it seems to be a very tough year. Good luck for your son for Imperial - mine also has a Bristol offer, but I think wants Imperial over Cambridge, so who knows, maybe they will end up there at the same time! It ain't over yet Grin

Panicmode1 · 25/11/2021 21:55

I'm sure I've missed news, so brilliantly well done to @kitnkaboodle's DCs and to everyone else who heard positively today, and huge commiserations - and onwards and upwards to those who had a negative email.

ealingwestmum · 25/11/2021 22:00

I hope Imperial news, one way or other comes through soon Tupila

Well done to your DCs kitnakaboodlle

CurlyhairedAssassin · 25/11/2021 22:17

Fantastic news, @kitnkaboodle, I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of them.. Which Cambridge college is it? Hoping DS hears from Churchill tomorrow. He's got his Imperial aero eng interview tomorrow so I'm hoping that at least one of those things goes his way!

Commiserations, @TupilaLilium. It does seem like this year there are lots of oustanding prospective engineers not getting an interview. I keep reading that they are pinning a lot on the ENGAA this year.

There does seem to be loads of engineers this year. Lots of competition, including from those who deferred last year I guess.

I had no idea that all the engineering specialisms at various institutions would have such different entrance methods and timescales.

I'm in awe of all these young people willing to put themselves through all these hoops. It's a lot of pressure and I don't think I could have done it at that age. I think they are ALL fab just for having a go.

kitnkaboodle · 25/11/2021 23:21

Thanks for the good wishes, everyone. Heartfelt commiserations to the unlucky ones, esp those with perfect grades Confused. Last year I was too dejected to post DS1's rejection on here - I just slunk away, so I very much respect people coming back here to post. @CurlyhairedAssassin his choice is Selwyn. I'd never heard of it! We looked round Churchill too and DS liked it a lot - esp. the sports fields!

doubleshotcappuccino · 26/11/2021 03:33

Single shot Cappuccino got an interview ! So pleased for her but also tempering my whooping as I know there are lots of mums here with equally capable DCs who don't understand why they didn't get an interview. Unmumsnetty covid friendly air hugs to you all. This thread has been such a huge source of support, and I lurked for much longer than I joined in . Thank you so much..

ealingwestmum · 26/11/2021 05:14

That’s great news for your DD doubleshot
