Medicine 2022 entry

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

Birmingham batch of interviews came out today with a separate maths test invite - both in Jan. I wonder when Newcastle will issue more invites? DS thinks they have only invited Partners so far...

Ijw2025 · 08/12/2021 19:25

Birmingham are sending invites for interview 👍

mumsneedwine · 08/12/2021 19:34

@Solarlantern Newcastle have invited some non Partners. Over 2900 UCATs. Sure more batches coming soon

opoponax · 08/12/2021 19:42

I've heard of two DC with Newcastle invites, both with UCATs >3000

Solarlantern · 08/12/2021 19:42

@mumsneedwine - DS has 3060 but not heard yet..I wonder if it's alphabetical? I might get him to check his spam folder just in case if the 2900+ have gone out!

opoponax · 08/12/2021 19:50

The DC I know, I believe one had 3,120 UCAT and the other 3,080. When my DS and friends swapped notes last year, it looked like Newcastle were issuing them in UCAT rank order but that was only a handful of DC comparing and assuming.

mumsneedwine · 08/12/2021 19:57

I've got a 2,850 and a 2,930. Who knows how they do it. I always think I've got it sussed but then I find out I haven't. If UCAT is over 3,000 I'd be pretty confident an interview will come.

Monkey2001 · 08/12/2021 21:44

On TSR it looked like the first batch was most of the Partners and International applicants and a few random non contextual. Definitely not in UCAT order.

I think the cut offs were looking like 2760 Partners and 2840 non contextual. Could go down with the next batch. People are expecting next batch of interviews 13th Dec. DS happy to wait as he wanted a January interview anyway.

Birmingham interview for DD - interview on Jan 19th plus Math calculation test on the 20th. Don’t know if the Maths is for everyone or just for non Maths A level types.

Solarlantern · 08/12/2021 23:08

@KingscoteStaff the maths is for everyone - my DS has Maths and Further Maths A level and he's doing it too - although the week before his interview in his case on 10/1!

BabbleBee · 08/12/2021 23:37

It’s a Plymouth no for DD, even with her BrightMed guaranteed interview. Their Ucat cut off was 2610, the email said they had 2500+ applications for 150 places.

Waiting on Keele and Manchester. She’s got HYMS interview at least, and Brighton Biomed conditional offer so all is not lost.

KingscoteStaff · 08/12/2021 23:47

You’re right @Solarlantern yes the Birm Maths is on the 10th.

Sorry about Plymouth @BabbleBee - those numbers are extraordinary.

Monkey2001 · 09/12/2021 06:52

@BabbleBee surely if she had a guaranteed interview they cant change that? I have seen quite a few medical schools reversing rejections made by mistake - they probably have a very small team which may have been overwhelmed by the volume of applicants. Definitely worth sending a very polite " Can I please check whether there has been a mistake....." e-mail has she had nothing to lose. Fingers crossed for a great HYMS interview.

Has she checked her email really carefully for Manchester? I think they have responded to just about everyone, cut off for non-contextual was 2710 B2 unless considered on holistic route. Get her to do a really thorough check, Promotions, Spam, "important mail" as it often goes to a strange folder. Interview bookings have closed now, but the only slots available by Friday were very early morning on Monday/Tuesday next week.

Keele is probably slower because of their holistic assessment for all applicants.

@KingscoteStaff - pleased to hear about the Birmingham interview for your DD. Very good to get one in.

Also well done to @notmedicmum with Plymouth.

It is very strange how the cut offs can up and down year by year by medical school. Really difficult for poor students to predict if it's simply the result of thousands of decisions by other students ☹️

BabbleBee · 09/12/2021 07:02

@Monkey2001 I thought the same on both counts… her UCAT was lower than their cut off and I’m pretty sure she had to still meet requirements even with BrightMed. I’ll get her to double check for Manchester today, if she’ll listen to me!

BabbleBee · 09/12/2021 08:52

I’ve had the eye roll of teenage doom and disappointment Grin I completely forgot she decided on Birmingham over Manchester in the end, so obviously won’t be hearing from Manchester…

Grin a lot of those here!

I went to kiss the top of ds’s head as I walked past the other day. A moment of weakness. He recoiled in horror and said ‘mum, personal boundaries’.

I am becoming more easily reconciled to the fact that he may be leaving home soon…

BabbleBee · 09/12/2021 10:22

@sydenhamhiller I know what you mean, and I keep thinking that if she thinks having potatoes as part of dinner that’s been cooked and provided for her for 4 days running is bad, then wait until med school… then she’ll find out what tough is!

sydenhamhiller · 09/12/2021 13:34

@BabbleBee
Amen to that…

BabbleBee · 09/12/2021 14:31

Birmingham was a yes! Interview date unspecified, just early 2022 and online.

Monkey2001 · 09/12/2021 15:17

Congratulations @KingscoteStaff @Solarlantern and @BabbleBee on Birmingham!

I only got a partial screenshot of the email - her interview is Feb 3rd with the maths on10th January.

Congratulations to @KingscoteStaff and @Solarlantern. Apologies for not keeping up, I’m spinning a lot of plates this week so to speak.

withiceplease · 09/12/2021 17:27

I keep popping back on here to see how people getting along after going through it all last year. I often wonder about SATSmadness daughter from last years thread and if she's reapplying

Monkey2001 · 09/12/2021 18:19

Where did your DC end up @withiceplease? I have also wondered about @satsmadness as her DD's experience was so like my DS's.
