Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

Hi @withiceplease. It doesn't seem like a year ago does it! I often wonder about SATSmadness daughter too. I really hope she is reapplying. I keep intending to take a break from this thread before it all kicks off for my DD with UCAT this summer but keep being drawn back. It is quite odd how you become invested in other DC that you don't know. I think it's partly because you know exactly what they are all going through and just want it to work out for them.

withiceplease · 09/12/2021 19:27

DD is at Nottingham and absolutely exhausted. It's so tiring in the first term with the effort of having to make friends, adjust to a new place and a new style of learning
She's also taken some time working out what works best with different forms of lectures - writing on paper/iPad or typing - and she says that she's got stuff she wants to go over in the holidays

If I'm honest, on results day I felt more relieved than happy. I found the year of applications very wearing - it's just relentless. And the hours on the internet scouring the admission criteria and stats - she did get 4 interviews so worthwhile. I suppose that's why I come back here as I really feel for folks going through the process
I so hope SATSmadness daughter is doing well

notnowbernadette · 09/12/2021 20:08

DS found out about a Keele interview by logging into the portal. He didn't get any email so it's worth checking the portal if DCs are waiting for decisions from Keele.

opoponax · 09/12/2021 21:01

DS will be working all through the Christmas holidays as they have exams as soon as they are back in January. He says the first term has flown by but that he has really enjoyed it. He has been working hard but definitely finding time to have fun too. At Newcastle they are given the cohort average mark for each assessment, which he says is reassuring and useful to gauge how he is doing. We are all so looking forward to seeing him at Christmas.

Millylovespuddles · 09/12/2021 22:24

I'm another one hoping that we get a surprise update with good news from SATSmadness.... I think about them often, and wish them every bit of good luck this year.
It was a horrible, horrible process...

Monkey2001 · 09/12/2021 23:31

@opoponax DS1 had his end of semester exam on Monday, so Christmas holiday is a complete break. I think that was a lucky thing, he did not think about assessment timetables when choosing universities. It means he doesn't have to bring all his notes home at Christmas and it is a real break. But it is what it is.

@Monkey2001 that's great that Christmas holiday is a break for DS1. To be fair, it's just me that is a bit disappointed that DS has to revise over Christmas. He just shrugs and takes it in his stride. I think he is looking forward to some socials with friends back home to balance it out a bit though.

mumsneedwine · 10/12/2021 06:08

@withiceplease if my DD can help with anything please ask (Notts 4th year). The med parents can be useful for things like revision resources and to discuss the format of exams, and a reassuring chat that you're doing great. It's a tough course ! But she has the musical to look forward to in 4th year 😊.
Good luck to everyone on upcoming interviews. Think the process will be going on to March. Best advice for those waiting is to try and concentrate on grades - sometimes get a bit forgotten with the stress of it all.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 10/12/2021 07:42

I'm another who has been thinking about @Satsmadness and her DD and hoping for a better outcome this year.

(For those that don't know the story her daughter got an Oxbridge interview and over 3000 in the UCAT but unfortunately didn't get any offers last year. It was all so sad.... we were all so invested in her!).

SandyBayley · 10/12/2021 09:53

I think I remember that. Did her DD get interviews and not offers or no interviews?

Chunni240 · 10/12/2021 10:12

DS has just done his interview for ST George’s, still waiting to hear from Southampton and Leicester. Has anyone got any updates on these 2 Unis?

opoponax · 10/12/2021 10:22

@SandyBayley Four interviews and no offers. Perfect stats.

SandyBayley · 10/12/2021 10:29

Poor girl. That sounds awful.

opoponax · 10/12/2021 10:36

It was awful. I really hope that she applies again and that it all goes really well, like it did for Monkey's DS1.

SandyBayley · 10/12/2021 12:10

#1 Oxford interview seemed to go well. She enjoyed it very much,

DD has applied to Southampton too. On their website they are doing interviews/selection day from 28th January onwards for BM5 school leavers and they send out the invitations 2 weeks before so the earliest we will know is mid January.
Chunni240 · 10/12/2021 13:32

@notmedicmum thank you x

KingscoteStaff · 10/12/2021 17:42

DD’s friend with 2900 B1 got Bristol interview today. Although they don’t take SJ into account, do they?

Ooh, they are flowing now! No, Bristol don't use SJT, has she applied to any of the ones where it really helps, like Nottingham, Birmingham, HYMS? I think it helps a lot of at St Andrews too.

Hanging in there are 2880 Band 1. Drums fingers impatiently....

speedyhedgehog · 12/12/2021 17:26

Congratulations to all the dc with interviews! Its all quiet here. Hopefully it will hot up a bit next month. Hopefully they'll all manage a relaxing Christmas.

Monkey2001 · 13/12/2021 11:34

@speedyhedgehog I can't remember whether you have heard from any? Who are you waiting for?

Lots being slow, we are hoping to hear from Newcastle this week and DS has Manchester interview tomorrow. I think it makes it harder to prepare when they haven't been able to visit places.

Oxford interview no 2 done. DD quite happy with how it went. Off for celebratory lunch. Would be nice if another interview dropped into the inbox this week...

KingscoteStaff · 13/12/2021 12:54

Come on Newcastle, come on Newcastle, COME ON NEWCASTLE!!!
