Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

@Monkey2001 - yes still waiting on the other 3. One is Bristol but no news today.

Monkey2001 · 03/12/2021 18:22

Good news @Solarlantern

Any idea what the Nottingham cut off is yet?

Solarlantern · 03/12/2021 19:06

@Monkey2001 - re Notts, DS got 137 if that is any help in working out the cut-off?

MidLifeCrisis007 · 03/12/2021 19:23

DD has had her Exeter and St Andrew's interviews.

Bristol booked for 10 January.

Edinburgh was a straight rejection.

Fingers crossed she gets an offer from one of her interviews!

notmedicmum · 03/12/2021 19:50

It’s wonderful that so many of our DC are getting interviews. We’ve not heard from any of DD’s three remaining choices (Liverpool, Southampton and Plymouth). Bit spooked that some Liverpool interview invites have already gone out but I believe that they also interview in early January. Anyway, no news is good news in our house at the moment after the drama of BMAT/Oxford!

opoponax · 03/12/2021 22:09

@notmedicmum last year Liverpool interview invites came out in quite a random way. On last year's thread one of our posters said that her DC had better stats than some people who had got earlier interview. The invitation did arrive though, just a bit later. Sorry about the BMAT fiasco and Oxford. Really not fair but it sounds like your DD has handled it admirably.

notmedicmum · 03/12/2021 22:52

Thanks for the reassurance @opoponax. We’ve decided not to think about it too much and chill over Christmas. DD certainly handled the whole BMAT thing better than meGrin.

bimkom · 04/12/2021 18:04

@notmedicmum yes my DS waited forever for his Liverpool interview invite. He didn't get it until mid January, and loads of people with stats much lower than his got invited. We eventually worked out that it was probably alphabetical (we are at the end of alphabet), and he got his for the very last week they interviewed.

notmedicmum · 04/12/2021 18:26

We’ll be waiting ages too if it’s alphabetical! Mid January isn’t too bad to wait till

TigerGolf · 06/12/2021 22:13

DS received an email from St George’s today inviting him to interview…phew!

FanSpamTastic · 06/12/2021 22:55

@TigerGolf - congratulations!

SandyBayley · 07/12/2021 06:58

Very good news @TigerGolf .

DD has #1 Oxford interview on Friday and #2 on Monday. Her mood is so much better and she's stopped fretting about when she'll hear from the other 3. I think her mood is also improved by the fact that school finishes on Friday!

TigerGolf · 07/12/2021 07:22

Thanks so much! He hasn’t heard either way from his other 3 choices, so we’ll wait and see. Good luck to your DC with forthcoming interviews, and those waiting to hear.

Monkey2001 · 07/12/2021 09:15

Well done @TigerGolf DS, even if you know you will get an interview, it is such a relief to see it in black and white. When is it?

KingscoteStaff · 07/12/2021 12:48

Come on Birmingham, come on Barts, come on 2nd lot of Newcastle + Bristol....

Annasgirl · 07/12/2021 15:18

We are in Ireland, but DD has also applied to the UK. She did not get an interview for Edinburgh, but she was thrilled this morning to get an interview for Queens.

So, I’m hopping on here to thank you all for the information I have gleaned from this thread, and to hope that we are all happy come September 2022!! I’m not sure I can go through the stress of this year a second time!

SandyBayley · 07/12/2021 21:52

I hear you re: Bristol and Newcastle @KingscoteStaff 😬

TigerGolf · 08/12/2021 09:15

It’s on the 16th 😬

TigerGolf · 08/12/2021 09:16

Sorry, that was meant to be a reply to @Monkey2001

Are they still doing the timed off line thing where you download the questions and record yourself answering them and upload it in a time window? They did that last year, and it brings different stresses! Good luck for next week.

Manchester next Tuesday (14th) for DS, he chose an early date to use it as a dry run for Newcastle, which is the one he really wants, and will be in Jan/Feb when they eventually get round to inviting him!

Plymouth UCAT cut off is v high. So many people with lower scores apply there and unfortunately this year it's not paid off.

notmedicmum · 08/12/2021 18:54

@mumsneedwine

Plymouth UCAT cut off is v high. So many people with lower scores apply there and unfortunately this year it's not paid off.
Good news for DD - she has an interview invite from Plymouth! She said the UCAT cut off had gone up by about 200 from 2400+ to 2600+. Plymouth was her ‘safe’ choice. DD well within cut off but it must be so disappointing for those with lower scores. Conversely Exeter’s UCAT cut off went down by 200. Feels like there is less predictability this year as to UCAT scores

Still waiting to hear from the other 2 choices.

Now, how to practice for an online MMI… any advice??

mumsneedwine · 08/12/2021 19:10

@notmedicmum fab news. 2600 should be good enough for lots of places. 🤞
Advice ? Don't be afraid to take a breath. I sometimes (they use my office 😂) hear the students gabbling away v fast. Trying to cram everything into those few minutes. Be clear, concise but don't be afraid to ask if unsure. Be a student they'd like to teach and work with. Listen if required - a v underrated skill. And good luck

Monkey2001 · 08/12/2021 19:15

@notmedicmum Exeter changed their system. Last year they interviewed all band (achieved 3x A* and contextual) whatever their UCAT, leaving very few interview slots for non contextual Y13s. This year non contextual Y13s with top decile UCAT got the same points as achieved and stronger contextual applicants, so it was better for Y13s, but much harder for contextual and lower UCAT achieved.

It is a very hard year for people with lower UCATs.

OP posts:
mumsneedwine · 08/12/2021 19:19

@Monkey2001 so hard for them. Although my 3 lowest UCATs have Oxbridge interviews 😊
