The continuation thread for those with DC at Durham, or applying to Durham, or alumni, or staff!

September 2021 finds us packing, unpacking, meeting old friends and new, and all with our fingers firmly crossed for a positive year!

Too slow at typing! Basically agreeing with @SpamhappyTootsie

SpamhappyTootsie · 23/09/2021 17:48

This only came out today, for Butler, Vargas so perhaps it is different college by college? We were going to do one anyway (my work means I do them twice weekly so am an old hand at it!). Input result, get email telling you what you have just told them Hmm and it will be there on your phone to show if asked.

Braveheart35 · 23/09/2021 17:48

I’ve registered DS with the Uni health service GP - My thinking is, I would want him to be able to access it immediately if needs be. If he was at home, I would be able to source an alternative pretty quickly. Their info looks good.

SpamhappyTootsie · 23/09/2021 17:50

The enthusiasm of old Alumni is very cheering! Thank you WhereIsMumHiding

Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 17:54

Apparently they have called loads of people , it’s being discussed now . Once he got over the shock he’s quite robust and has blocked the number but others may not be so resistant

Bluebellwoods1 · 23/09/2021 17:55

Think DD is now packed , haven’t registered with GP there will do to tomorrow, my house will be so quiet after the weekend , Hope everyone moves ok and settles well.

Well it's one way for them all to bond! What a weird thing for someone to do...
Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 18:02

I presume if they are allocated a Saturday arrival slot they will be fed ?

Heee heee!! Sorry as I didn't RTFT I just got FAR TOO EXCITED!!!

Durham is a brilliant university it opened so many doors for me. I made my best friends ever whom I adore. The colleg system at Durham makes it so cosy and supportive although I don't feel that COVID years students will have experienced that. Let's hope you all get to feel the Durham magic that all the rest of us had GrinThanks🥰🥰

LeiatheSchnauzer · 23/09/2021 19:03

@Peaseblossum22, that is very unsettling, what a nasty experience. Can't see what the point of it is?! Glad he is feeling OK now.
I have to say I assumed dd would be fed on Saturday evening but just saw a post on Instagram which says they don't get fed till Sunday night so I am now realising no breakfast or lunch either!

Meery · 23/09/2021 19:17

I am hoping that they order in pizza or something even if not ‘official’ catering - seems odd that the college ask them to move in on Saturday but are not prepared to feed them.

We have a mid afternoon Saturday slot, will wave at anyone else arriving at that time but please don’t out me my dd would be mortified!

Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 19:17

I can’t believe that is right , when I spoke to them they said half were arriving Saturday surely they are not expecting over 100 freshers to find their own breakfast ?

Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 19:27

And dinner and lunch the next day

Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 19:29

@Meery snap , likewise re the outing, perhaps we should wear a white carnations so that we can signal discretely

LeiatheSchnauzer · 23/09/2021 19:30

Agree, I was a bit surprised. It was on the Trevsfreshers2021 stories.

chopc · 23/09/2021 19:31

Ooh that's a great idea @Peaseblossum22

Sadly we are only moving DS in on Sun

LeiatheSchnauzer · 23/09/2021 19:33

Maybe it just means full catering and sit down meals. Am wondering if there might just be a regular canteen style option available.

And as dd has pointed out this is from the Freps page, not an official college page.

321zyx · 23/09/2021 20:16

From the accommodation page of website "Catering is provided from the Sunday dinner prior to induction week for all new first-year students with the exception of new international students arriving for international induction"

MidLifeCrisis007 · 23/09/2021 20:27

Top tip from my DH for long distance Durham droppers on Saturday/Sunday.

Do not run low on fuel! We are hearing there are lots of service stations out of fuel at the moment (panic buying due to rising prices). Hopefully the motorways will still be getting supplies, but don't go below quarter of a tank just in case!

Thanks @MidLifeCrisis007 - I had the same thought today. Thought it was just BP who made announcement, but I guess it has a knock on effect.

Ds' college only doing Saturday drop offs. I am going to assume they must provide some sustenance. If not, at least it will get him out exploring!
321zyx · 23/09/2021 20:46

@Vargus based on the omnishambles of college and room allocation, plus sheer lack of information (perhaps DS has been unlucky) I wouldn't assume anything.............Hmm

par05 · 23/09/2021 21:38

Leaving to drop dd sat, have just got stuff everywhere at the moment, and hoping it will all fit! Getting very real now 😩

chopc · 23/09/2021 21:49

DS and I both feel embarrassed by how much stuff he has given he is going to fully catered halls 🙈. Especially as there will be freps helping to take the stuff up to the room
