The continuation thread for those with DC at Durham, or applying to Durham, or alumni, or staff!

September 2021 finds us packing, unpacking, meeting old friends and new, and all with our fingers firmly crossed for a positive year!

@LeiatheSchnauzer do you know whether the washing machines are prefixed or do they need washing powder. It’s says on the Instagram highlights ( very useful I recommend) that colour catchers are not comparable with the machines and that drying is free , there’s a nice picture of the laundry but no info on powder. Ds says he’s not asking .

He did get his room yesterday though, he’s a night owl and predictably is above the bar!

Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 10:51

Predosed

KingscoteStaff · 23/09/2021 10:57

Hatfield's are predosed.

@chopc I think cricket trials are this term - I will check with DS.

Anyone registered with Durham for doctors yet? Is it online appointment only for those of you who know? We have a brilliant GP at home who still do face to face appointments where necessary (but it is so far from Durham ) and I'm just weighing up pros/ cons of changing.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 23/09/2021 12:22

@Peaseblossum22 we used my card for payment so possibly not that?
When I was trawling through the official Trevelyan handbook (before I found the Freshers one) I think I did see it was predosed for the washing machines so not sending any persil. Not sure why colour catchers won't work, I think I saw a picture on the Instagram page and they looked like normal machines!
@libbytrois, dd has registered with the durham one that was linked on the website. Am hoping it will make repeat prescriptions simpler.

KingscoteStaff · 23/09/2021 12:44

Freshers cricket trials (men and women) start on Oct 6th.

chopc · 23/09/2021 12:51

Thanks @KingscoteStaff . Luckily I asked you as DS wasn't planning to take his cricket bag

SpamhappyTootsie · 23/09/2021 17:05

DS said some machines at Butler are preloaded but others let you put your own in.
I am so very tense, now! In a haze of packing (DS is very organised but I am doing the clothes and everything).
Really pleased to get the arrival procedure through today. Relieved we can go to their rooms with them, if LFT done and proof brought. Assume the email you get from the NHS testing when you have input your result will be sufficient? Although you’ve told them it is negative already, so it’s still just on your word only.
Like the sound of the refreshments marquee while DS plays Cupboard Jenga with his clothes and crockery Grin.
I expect the Botanic Gardens might be full of pacing parents!

chopc · 23/09/2021 17:10

Anyone know if Collingwood machines are pre dosed?

Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 17:21

ds just had a really disturbing call from someone claiming to know him that knew what college he was going to and telling him to arrive on a different day . They weren't very pleasant when he said he would only change the day he arrived unless he received an official email. Tbh he's a bit shaken up.Of course its after 5 so he can't check, starting to wish he'd opted for St Andrews.Sad

SpamhappyTootsie · 23/09/2021 17:23

That sounds nasty Peaseblossum! Someone from the wider social media groups being a dickhead, maybe?

Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 17:28

He’s not really a fan of social media but has joined the groups etc now it feels really uncomfortable , what sort of person would go such a thing. It’s obviously not official they wouldn’t use language like that but it’s unpleasant and unsettling

SpamhappyTootsie · 23/09/2021 17:30

I suppose Trolls will Troll wherever they think they can confuse and upset Sad
Maybe Durham attracts bitter people who didn’t get in?

SpamhappyTootsie · 23/09/2021 17:32

Is it a WhatsApp group he joined? I’m sure DS said he was in one and that would provide sad losers with a phone number.

chopc · 23/09/2021 17:32

@Peaseblossum22 that is creepy!

Vargas · 23/09/2021 17:32

DS registered with GP in Durham today. I wondered what was best to do, but it is so impossible getting appointments with our London GP that I thought it might work well to try a different one, we will see how it goes!

SpamhappyTootsie · 23/09/2021 17:36

Our GP is a bit crap too, Vargas. DS figured he might as well give the Durham one a go instead and register with a different one up here when he comes home for summer.

Peaseblossum22 · 23/09/2021 17:36

Yes WhatsApp

WhereIsMumHiding3 · 23/09/2021 17:38

Please join me this this lovely thread!! I'm a Durham old Alumni myself (HildBede) made my best friends ever there and my son is at Aidens as he wanted one near the science site and less formal .

He's now second year and living out with his friends. I will be reading all through the thread & trying to find the previous ones 🥰
DS hated online learning last year & had to self isolate repeatedly due to others in accomodation getting COVID, it was the worst time last year for him. BUT so excited about this year!!! Hopefully a different experience. He's catching train back up soon.

I had the best time at Durham uni - it was the making of me! I even tried rowing and yup I was up at 5.30am, although I learnt after a heavy night to put a hoodie over my pj top , sling on joggers and run 🏃🏼‍♀️ to the early lectures Grin

Oh the Xmas and End of Year Balls.... the non Covid year students have no idea how fabulous they were! And the formal dinner evenings 🥰

Vargas · 23/09/2021 17:40

Sorry @Peaseblossum22, I have only just seen your post. How very odd and creepy! I guess there was no caller id? It's definitely worth mentioning to the college.

SpamhappyTootsie · 23/09/2021 17:40

@Peaseblossum22

Yes WhatsApp
Honestly, some people are pathetic Angry. I hope he isn’t too bothered by it once he gets in touch tomorrow. No way would a) anyone phone him with that info and b) get arsey when he said he would wait for an email. I’d probably put a warning in the Group that it has happened, in case others are worrying because they have been contacted. Understand if he doesn’t feel able to, though.
Vargas · 23/09/2021 17:43

@SpamhappyTootsie - DS hasn't mentioned anything about doing LFTs and he has supposedly read all the bumpf... Hmm. Probs best for us to all do one before we go, just in case. Has anyone with dc going to Van Mildert heard anything about drop off parents' testing?

WhereIsMumHiding3 · 23/09/2021 17:43

Argh i mistyped
"Please join me TO this lovely thread ..."
And
"The Covidyear students (who had to do it differently) have no idea how fabulous the college Balls and formals are"

Is what I meant to type!!
I'm obvs typing too fast Grin for my phone Wink

Meery · 23/09/2021 17:45

@Peaseblossum22 I suggest he tells the WhatsApp group or admins (if they exist) in case any others are getting similar. Shame if it has come from the group as my dd has found them to be really friendly and helpful.

WhereIsMumHiding3 · 23/09/2021 17:46

I shall now RTFT as there is other issues being discussed. Sorry, I was just so excited to join my MNer people Grin
I already have my Durham uni people IRL Smile
