The continuation thread for those with DC at Durham, or applying to Durham, or alumni, or staff!

September 2021 finds us packing, unpacking, meeting old friends and new, and all with our fingers firmly crossed for a positive year!

@jano69 thank you for the info, yes at least it’s not online!

KingscoteStaff · 18/09/2021 15:38

The online one last year was a bit underwhelming!

It must've been - rotten for your DS and last year's intake. Just happy matriculation is actually happening this time round.
chopc · 18/09/2021 17:33

Do you guys reckon you have to have a certain physique to row for fun at Durham? DS is small made and wouldn't entertain the idea due to his size. I did say it would just be for recreation but even so he thinks his size will hinder him

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 18/09/2021 17:39

Nah, anyone can row. That's the great thing about the collegiate system, you don't have to be fantastic and uni sports team standard, yes colleges will have their first take who will be pretty competitive but there will also be people just in it for fun.

Braveheart35 · 18/09/2021 17:58

Anybody’s DS/DD doing History managed to get a look of their timetable yet?

GoTrevs · 18/09/2021 18:00

Exactly what @OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea said, college sport allows for such breadth of participants. It's wonderful and typically very sociable.

Pleased to hear the arrival slots are coming in! Can't wait to hear how all your DC settle in. Much as I wouldn't want to revisit most of my youth, I'd happily have my time in Trevs again.

moch · 18/09/2021 18:11

@KingscoteStaff &@Longtimenewsee That’s great to know. Hope the face to face lectures go ahead.

chopc · 18/09/2021 18:18

Thank you @GoTrevs and @OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea

@Braveheart35 DS had issues logging into the Durham portal today . But he did hear from a friend that there was an mail about History

Longtimenewsee · 18/09/2021 18:18

Dd is hoping to have a go at rowing . She has absolutely no experience whatsoever 😁.

MargaretThursday · 18/09/2021 18:52

My conversation about rowing (not at Durham though) went along the lines of:

Rep: Are you interested in trying rowing?
Me: What does it involve?
Rep: Well, we normally meet at 6:15am....
Me: No I don't think I'll be interested.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 18/09/2021 20:53

DS1 is a rower and knows most the Durham 1st VIII but doesn't want to row at Durham. I'm devastated!

Braveheart35 · 18/09/2021 21:15

@chopc

I just casually asked DS if had heard from the History dept. Says nope. Itching to hysterically shout ‘but somebody on mumsnet has, check again’. Probably best not to.

chopc · 18/09/2021 23:37

@Braveheart35 just asked DS again. No timetable but apparently everyone has been asked to reselect their modules

chopc · 19/09/2021 00:39

@MidLifeCrisis007 how come he doesn't want to row? Want to try something different or?

MidLifeCrisis007 · 19/09/2021 07:51

A few reasons @chopc. Just before lockdown in March 2020 he'd been suffering from bad forearm tendonitis after a January rowing camp in Portugal so turned his attention to bike riding to keep fit. He seems to like that more now and his weight has suffered as a result.... well suffered in a rowing sense that is... he now weighs only 74kg... and the good rowers are typically 90kg to 100kg.

I would much rather he rowed than cycled. For safety reasons more than anything.

hanghang · 19/09/2021 11:51

Wonder if anyone can help? DS struggling to log on to Durham portal using her fairly new Apple mac book air but can do so on my old HP.
Anyone know why? Many thanks

chopc · 19/09/2021 22:33

Wow @MidLifeCrisis007 !

I think your DS will find what's right for him
At Durham

@hanghang DD did have an issue yesterday but managed to login fine today

Vargas · 19/09/2021 23:12

DS seems to be able to login to Durham portal ok but is having problems getting into his Durham email account. I don't really understand the issue and he's not very good at explaining things... I might tell him to take a look on Student Room, they sometimes have some answers.

PickAChew · 19/09/2021 23:17

The racecourse is a short walk (for most 18 year olds!)

I shall welcome your dc. It's too bloody quiet here, without them all!

PickAChew · 19/09/2021 23:19

It's not a great city for cyclists, mind. Uphill both ways!

myrtleWilson · 19/09/2021 23:21

Durham resident here (and wife of a lecturer!) It has been really nice over the past couple of weeks seeing students returning. Durham is usually busy with tourists in the summer but understandably less busy this year. Lots of new food places opening up in the coming weeks so plenty more socialising opportunities!

Hope all your DC have a great time!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 20/09/2021 07:17

He won't be cycling around Durham! He'll be going out on to the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. There are some lovely places to visit up there.
Vargas · 20/09/2021 07:44

My ds is adamant he wants a bike in Durham for cycling to lectures. He's on the hill, Van Mildert. Do most kids walk to lectures from the hill colleges? Anyone know?

SpamhappyTootsie · 20/09/2021 07:47

DS intends to walk to lectures from the hill. He’s not a fan of buses Grin

The LFT regime seems pretty strict. Bit of a pita to have to go to a central point every time to do it under observation, but I suppose that’s the best way to ensure they all have it done. I assume they won’t have to isolate if someone in their flat tests positive, if they are double vaccinated?
