The continuation thread for those with DC at Durham, or applying to Durham, or alumni, or staff!

September 2021 finds us packing, unpacking, meeting old friends and new, and all with our fingers firmly crossed for a positive year!

Oh dear I don't know if I should keep hope for DS being able to get back to Durham from Kings Cross today ..... so far trains cancelled up to Newcastle

Peaseblossum22 · 28/11/2021 17:28

So ds parcel that I sent has gone missing , he says it hasn’t arrived but the tracker says it’s been delivered and signed for , presumably I. The porters lodge . Ds is useless at picking things up so god knows where it’s gone . Plus he seems to have no idea when he’s coming home ir even if he has to clear his room . Anyone know if Trevs people have to clear their rooms Confused

Oblomov21 · 28/11/2021 17:46

Those Autumnal leaves look so beautiful. I can't wait to go visit Durham, when Ds1 finally gets an offer (we all know offers are very late).

Peaseblossum22 · 28/11/2021 17:54

Ok parcel found , panic over. For some reason I became quite tearful about him not having anything in his birthday . Still no info about room thoughGrin

321zyx · 28/11/2021 17:58

Anyone else have DC due to go on the pre Christmas ski trip to Val Thorens? I wasn't 100% happy about this prior to the new Covid announcement - now.....well...what can I say!

Longtimenewsee · 28/11/2021 18:01

Aww @Peaseblossum22.. I would be the same.
I hope he has a lovely birthday Smile

Longtimenewsee · 28/11/2021 18:28

Oh no @chopc
i guess there isn’t much he can do except wait it out?
Can understand your concern @321zyx

321zyx · 28/11/2021 18:37

@Peaseblossum22 it took ages for DS to collect a parcel - apparently (in his college) he can only collect at certain times of the day....

We are due to be going skiing over Christmas as a family. Have to say, it's looking doubtful! (Shame as there's been a nice dump of snow this week!).

www.snowheads.com is the best forum for getting the latest info. The tour operators are all useless and still trying to sell you holidays!

KingscoteStaff · 28/11/2021 19:49

At the moment Palatinalps is saying all still on for leaving for ski-ing on the 10th.

@KingscoteStaff DS tells me the 11th but who am I to argueGrin! They are due to return to UK on 17th/18th Dec - after all that nightlife and 24 hours plus (each way) in a coach what are the odds on a positive (day 2) PCR spoiling our Christmas plans with extended family (who we didn't see 12 months ago)!!

KingscoteStaff · 28/11/2021 20:25

Could it be late night Friday from Durham / early morning Saturday from London?

chopc · 28/11/2021 21:02

DS made it back to Durham!

I have spent a lovely afternoon / early evening with DD. Durham is freezing but very beautiful.
Lovely to see her and hear her stories , only 2 weeks and she will be back .
She is busy both socially and work wise over next two weeks so I think she will be exhausted when she comes home.

321zyx · 28/11/2021 21:13

@KingscoteStaff yes, quite likely - however I'm rather more concerned about the return journey and new requirement for a negative PCR test (at additional cost to ski trip..grrr) and the possible knock on effect to our Christmas plans.....c'est la vie I guess!

@Bluebellwoods1 lovely that you were able to visit your dd. Do you live close by? My sister in law was going to visit my dd over the weekend but the M62 was closed so she couldn’t get there. Such a change in weather from last weekend. My dd has quite a lot of essays to submit now before the end of term so doesn’t think she can rearrange her visit before the end of term.

Bluebellwoods1 · 29/11/2021 18:35

@SpringSparrow , I don’t live close by but had tickets for the train and thought I would chance it on Sunday , I travelled from Kings Cross and there were far to many people on the train , in the carriage I was in 3 male students gave there seats to people they felt were more in need and one elderly lady spoke about how well raised the student was, ‘‘twas lovely. They stood the entire time.

In comparison I returned today and almost had a carriage to myself.

SpringSparrow · 29/11/2021 23:52

@Bluebellwoods1 how lovely of those students! I used to travel as a student from kings Cross up North and remember sitting in the luggage rack all the way on one occasion! Also made tea for a coach load of other passengers on a national express coach lol. How did you find the train journey? It’s a similar time for us by train as it is by car, about five hours. I guess it’s more relaxing by train, although maybe not if it’s very crowded 😬.! Did you get to spend any time with your dd today as well?

NinaProudman2022 · 30/11/2021 11:05

Does anyone know what date Durham are likely to make offers for 2022 applicants please? Or do you think it is it likely to be anyones guess after the last couple of years.
Thanks

Difficult to say - depends on department. Ours came through late March this year if my memory serves me correct. Certainly the last to come through.
NinaProudman2022 · 30/11/2021 11:21

Thanks @libbytrois its Physics.

clan17 · 30/11/2021 13:38

Physics offer came through end of January for DS last year.

History - last offer, end of March.
