The continuation thread for those with DC at Durham, or applying to Durham, or alumni, or staff!

September 2021 finds us packing, unpacking, meeting old friends and new, and all with our fingers firmly crossed for a positive year!

@Longtimenewsee thank you 😊

MidLifeCrisis007 · 20/11/2021 18:43

@Fruitygal

A friend sent pics of the lumiere amazing photos of the cathedral
I asked DS to send me some photos of the lumiere and he said they weren't allowed up onto the Bailey? Is that just him being lazy?..... I know he had a very late night in Jimmy's nightclub last night (again!).
instanthistory · 20/11/2021 18:51

@MidLifeCrisis007 they need tickets or proof of a restaurant booking to get through into Durham centre according to my ds. There are lots of lovely photos on Twitter.

instanthistory · 20/11/2021 18:53

I was visiting my ds until Thursday morning so missed it. Must plan better. It was a great visit anyway - such a lovely place to live and study.

Someone mentioned the Facebook Group 'I Love Durham" up thread so I've joined and really enjoyed seeing the amazing images there this week. DS doesn't know that though..... I wanted him to take some and send them to me!

In other news, he handed in his first essay this week. I'm sure we worked much harder there in the 80s!

Longtimenewsee · 21/11/2021 10:48

@MidLifeCrisis007 he’s not just being lazy ..I think they do have to have either a pass ( if they live on Bailey) or a ticket for Lumiere to get up there . Reservation makes sense too

Can anybody recommend a postal cake delivery service, or even better a baker in Durham that delivers? Need to get some birthday goodies organised…Cake

clan17 · 21/11/2021 22:36

@Motherknowsbest100 I have recently used M&S cake delivery service which worked well. Will be interested to find out about local bakers as that sounds like a brilliant idea.

JulesJules · 21/11/2021 22:54

Mother I've sent the M&S Colin the Caterpillar gift box, Gower Cottage brownies from Amazon, and fondant fancies, chocolate cake and fat rascals from Betty's. All very gratefully received and reportedly delicious.

Vargas · 21/11/2021 23:57

Ds birthday coming up soon but he doesn't like cake (where did I go wrong Grin), so I'm posting a few gifts plus large bar of chocolate. It will be the first time I don't see him on his actual birthday, which will be very odd... Sad.

Motherknowsbest100 · 22/11/2021 06:45

It’s the first birthday we haven’t spent together so I am wanting to send a few treats.
Thanks for the M&S cakes and Colin the caterpillar heads up - will look at that as a fall back option. I’m an avid baker myself but not sure how my cakes would travel so not willing to risk it!

sponge cakes travel very well in the posy in a plastic box the same size as the cake!
grannycab · 22/11/2021 20:46

No idea what thay typo (posy??) meant - in a plastic box the same size as the cake.

Bluebellwoods1 · 23/11/2021 07:23

DD Bday is also soon, I am visiting her on Sunday and will take some Bday treats with me.

Peaseblossum22 · 23/11/2021 07:29

dS also has his birthday next week. I have put a parcel together . Hadn’t really thought about sending a cake , he’s not really a cake person !

KingscoteStaff · 23/11/2021 23:15

If they’re more beery than cakey, Durham Brewery does delivery. And someone else recommended a Spanish ham delivery!!

Lots of great ideas - many thanks!

MargaretThursday · 26/11/2021 20:15

Looks like it's going to be pretty windy up there-they're on amber wind warning.

Longtimenewsee · 26/11/2021 20:21

Yes Dd said lectures were cancelled from 3pm.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 26/11/2021 21:31

It is vile out there. Hope they are all staying warm and dry.

PickAChew · 26/11/2021 23:21

Yes, memories of badly heated student accommodation, here. Some pretty nast guts due in the early hours and bloody cold, tomorrow.

Hopefully some will understand the concept of socks!

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 27/11/2021 23:10

@Longtimenewsee Ds's were cancelled from 2pm and they were told to stay indoors as much as possible.

He had to go for his LFT today and sent us photos of some massive tree branches that had come down. Think it shocked him seeing how large they were and ultimately how powerful the storm was.

@PickAChew Ds took Heat Holder socks with him, he likes being toasty. He says his room is a bit nippy in the morning, he turns the heat on and by the time he is out of the shower it is warm in there. His college building is only 1 year old though so no draughty window frames. I offered to buy him an electric over-blanket like my Dad has who is 80, he also likes being toasty whilst he watches tv Grin

bigTillyMint · 28/11/2021 08:46

DS said the library was closed Friday afternoon over concerns for safety due to the storm Shock

KingscoteStaff · 28/11/2021 10:12

Amazing pics of Hatfielders struggling into formal hall with their gowns blown out horizontally behind them like Superman’s cloak!

I hope everyone’s DCs are keeping safe and well . Can’t believe they’ve almost done a term!Shock.
We are going to be picking Dd up for Xmas .. as she has to move out of her accommodation for Xmas and took too much blimming stuff!! . College has said to to get a padlock for her under-bed storage .
We bought some stuff back when we visited so hopefully everything will squash in there
I think we’ll take a big wheeled case up for her and a couple of squashy big bags. I’m hoping she will have recently done her laundry but feel that may be a bit of wishful thinking.

She said they had a little bit of snow but it didn’t stick (although it did here!) I bet Durham would look v pretty in the snow.

She is doing quite a lot of Christmas things with her college (which sound really good fun to be involved in) but also has a LOT of course work onHmm.

One good piece of news is that the hours devoted to house hunting may be at an end .

Has anyone got their tree up yet?!Grin
