Fingers crossed for those final offers coming in!

Hope no one minds me starting the new thread...

The irony is that he would be happy to transfer of possibly even defer but he's not been selected to be part of the scheme. At the end of the day I'm just pleased he's got a place. Once it's all sunk in he'll need to start planning to leave. His uni start very very early in Sept.

opoponax · 12/08/2021 18:43

That's annoying @Powergower but you are right that the main thing is that he has his place. I have to say that Newcastle have been brilliant so far. Great communications from them throughout and they've been really efficient since DS's offer changed to unconditional on Tuesday. We've had no drama as yet over place availability and first choice of accommodation has been confirmed and all paperwork completed today. They have reassured about F2F teaching too. It's all feeling mighty real now though!

LaLaFlottes · 12/08/2021 19:15

@Powergower absolutely right - he has his place and that’s all that matters. He’s done so well. Exciting to get organised - that’s an early start isn’t it? DD moves into halls on 19th Sept.

@opoponax that’s great DS has his first choice of accommodation and it’s all been straightforward Smile that’s lovely.

Sheffield have also been great so far with lovely emails welcoming her and congratulating her.

The accommodation she chose a while ago is all confirmed and deposit paid and she’s booked her move in date and time slot.

They are also saying face to face teaching which is good.

I am currently refining my list of what we need to buy at the moment - that side of things excites me far more than DD!

Theredjellybean · 12/08/2021 21:56

Dd not been offered transfer or cash for deferral from. Bristol... I think she'd take cash and a gap Yr but she has been set on Bristol since Yr 9.
No way would she transfer.
When I left to go to med school (so long ago now) my mum bought me two mugs, two bowls, two spoons and a travel kettle for my room. In case I ever "entertained"
In those days you didn't get near a patient until Yr 3 so no need for stethoscope.

LaLaFlottes · 12/08/2021 23:23

@Theredjellybean that’s so nice DD has a place at Bristol after wanting to go there for so long Smile

withiceplease · 14/08/2021 11:46

Could someone with medic DC recently say what they found with text books please? Eg if core texts on line, what they bought etc etc
Been looking at perlego recently too - any thoughts on that?
Many thanks

mumsneedwine · 14/08/2021 11:52

@withiceplease DD didn't buy any books in her first year as all were on line. She has bought some along the way though, epidemiology and anatomy ones. And now clinical ones from the look of my Amazon account (it's always interesting to see what I have ordered 😊).

sergeantmajormum · 14/08/2021 12:16

Grays anatomy flash cards were useful for revision. Recently (2nd year) bought Clinical Medicine by Kumar and Clark which is very useful apparently and a huge book! Much is however online. Different med schools vary as to when you need stethoscope , fob watch etc so wait till you know - they often give out discount vouchers. DD at Liverpool if anyone has specific questions HTH.

Monkey2001 · 14/08/2021 12:44

No books needed by my DS at St Andrews, all available on line. He needed lab coat (Howie style), stethoscope and pocket mask, but as others have said, some give/lend equipment. One thing you can get it a little first aid kit for their room.

mumsneedwine · 14/08/2021 12:48

And a mini tool kit. Having a screwdriver, hammer and pliers has been v useful over the years. Even if they don't have to put plugs on everything like I did (using a nail file 😊).

withiceplease · 14/08/2021 13:11

I can remember reading the whole of Kumar and Clarke and making mind maps as I went. It is v thick!
That's super thank you - I won't buy anything yet then. I have seen greys anatomy for students in local oxfam books a few times. That won't date and it seems popular so may buy that if I see it when I can actually walk🙄

ljmutti · 14/08/2021 13:12

Anyone going to Sheffield?

redtulip12 · 14/08/2021 13:23

@sergeantmajormum My dd is going to Liverpool. She will be in Greenbank. Grateful for any tips etc. We are currently working through her list of things to buy!

opoponax · 14/08/2021 13:32

Has anyone used UniKitOut before? It is quite tempting to have it all delivered to be there for DS arriving rather than drive it all from one end of the country to the other.

LaLaFlottes · 14/08/2021 13:48

@ljmutti my DD is going to Sheffield Smile

mumsneedwine · 14/08/2021 13:57

@LaLaFlottes @ljmutti they'll become friends 😊. My DD is at a party this weekend with another MNs DD. They are not best buddies but used to send us photos from nightclubs.

LaLaFlottes · 14/08/2021 14:49

That’s nice @mumsneedwine Smile

DD is lucky in that two of her very good friends are also going to Sheffield - one is also studying Medicine, so that’s been really nice.

Been and bought some bedding today Grin

ljmutti · 14/08/2021 15:38

So happy for you . Congratulations 🎉

LaLaFlottes · 14/08/2021 15:55

You too @ljmutti - did your DD also choose Sheffield in the end? I think I remember you saying she was choosing between Sheffield and Leicester?

sergeantmajormum · 14/08/2021 17:01

@redtulip12
Don’t think she bought much specific to being a Med student before she got there except need black trainers or comfy shoes to wear with scrubs for clinical skills sessions initially and placements from year 2 - no idea why but have to be black! Otherwise usual recommendations - doorstop, decent backpack, vases (no one had anything to put flowers in bizarrely!!). Green bank is nice but fair way from campus - DD was in centre so I don’t know details but believe there is a bus pass they all use. Let me know if you think of other things, seems such a long time ago now. DD is very happy there but enjoying a decent break this summer - had to revise all last summer as exams postponed cos of CV till September 🙄

redtulip12 · 14/08/2021 17:59

@sergeantmajormum Thank you! She applied for Crown Place but apparently that is where all the deferred students from last year have been allocated. It will be a pain getting the bus but the accommodation looks great and there will be a lot of them there so easy to make friends.
We have the doorstop! Need to find a backpack then and black trainers. Thanks for heads up.

ljmutti · 14/08/2021 19:13

Yes she found Sheffield ticking all boxesz.
I will msg you

opoponax · 14/08/2021 19:49

Also, what's the right stethoscope to get again, please? I do remember that you have to get it engraved with their name as they all look the same. I'm not feeling very prepared at the moment but was too superstitious to buy anything at all before last Thursday. I was exactly the same when expecting our DC all these years ago.

opoponax · 14/08/2021 19:50

Sorry meant last Tuesday. The past week has been a blur as my DD had GCSE results on Thursday as well.

ljmutti · 14/08/2021 20:02

A vase?
Would they send any list to buy ?
I am lost as to what essentials to get for my DD
