Fingers crossed for those final offers coming in!

Hope no one minds me starting the new thread...

@MidLifeCrisis007

DD has both a MacBook and an iPad with the hand writing screen cover and an Apple Pencil. She uses both a lot, albeit one week in 😆

The iPad was a birthday present last year (bought early so she got the airpods for free on the summer student deal), and she bought the MacBook herself with some of her child trust fund money. We didn't add anything to it but it paid out a lot to her. Check yours for when your Dd turns 18.

opoponax · 30/10/2021 14:49

Hi everyone. Just thought I would say a quick Hi as it has all gone very quiet on this thread now, understandably. Hope everyone's DC have settled in well and are enjoying their new lives and that all the stresses of last year are now a dim and distant memory. DS is very happy, is loving his course and seems to be coping well with looking after himself. Working hard but lots of social stuff going on too. He is coming back for a weekend next month and I am so looking forward to seeing him.

withiceplease · 30/10/2021 15:53

DD settled well and just in final throes of sorting house for next year. She has only recently go going properly on course. Was there for a full week from 20 September with nothing medical at all and the 3 weeks after the were signing up to stuff, learning to use library, getting outstanding vaccinations done etc. I was surprised tbh
She came home last weekend- was instructed to bring only her washing by me. She's had boarding school already and can wash but I've always thought communal washers time consuming and miserable. When I was at university, I just paid for a service wash. She loved having home food again.
She's taking it very seriously with sorting lecture notes etc and not going out much on school nights. So all good here.
It's nice to hear how they are getting on opoponax

opoponax · 30/10/2021 16:06

Ah that's great @withiceplease. I'm so pleased it is all going well for your DD. DS is also in the throes of sorting house for next year. It feels very soon to be choosing who you want to share with but he seems fine with it and says you have to be quick off the mark to secure houses. Re vaccinations, has your DD had a Meningitis B vaccination? I've heard of some DC getting them as I believe in their time baby vaccinations (and teen boosters) were only for Meningitis C whereas now I believe Meningitis B is included. Agree the communal washing is a bit of a bore. He is flying home to see us and I'm guessing that he will be over the baggage limit with all his laundry!

withiceplease · 30/10/2021 16:15

I believe she had men b as a young child and ACWY as a teenager

LonelySock · 30/10/2021 18:33

@withiceplease MenB vax didn't exist until recently. Annoyingly, due to cost I imagine, the nhs do not include teens even though it's the second biggest at risk group. Babies and toddlers get it only.

If you want your teen to have it is £120 ish at boots or Superdrug over two injections.

LaLaFlottes · 30/10/2021 18:41

Hello! Glad to hear your DC are happy @opoponax and @withiceplease Smile

DD is also having a great experience so far. She had freshers week which did involve some compulsory “introduction” type lectures, then a week where the timetable started but they were also being shown how to use the library and so on. But since then it’s been all systems go!

She’s already on GP placements every fortnight which she’s enjoying and had her first dissection class last week which thankfully she was ok with. They have been allocated their patients that they go and meet and learn from, (I can’t remember the official name for this) they do this in pairs I believe. First student selected component essay uploaded on Thursday - she had her friends round and they all uploaded it together while apparently stress eating the Halloween chocolate eyeballs I had sent!

She has her occupational health immunisation and screening (blood tests I think) appointment on 17th. She’s going to ask about the Men B vaccine at her appointment @opopnax to see what their opinion is as I’d quite like her to have it, but want to make sure she gets the mandatory ones for the course first.

DD came home for one weekend for DH birthday (but really so see her boyfriend Grin ) but now I’m not sure when she will next be back.

She’s off to view a flat for next year tomorrow morning - I think she has high hopes as they know the student dentists who are graduating and therefore moving out and they have enjoyed living there - they stayed in the same house for the duration so I’m hoping that’s a sign of a decent landlord!

Trying to get used to her not being here is hard, but hearing her news is lovely and exciting Smile

opoponax · 30/10/2021 20:52

Lovely to hear how your DD is faring @LaLaFlottes. It all sounds wonderful. Great that she got back for a weekend too. It is hard missing them but you can't help but get swept up in their excitement, can you. That's exactly what DS is going to do about the Men B vaccine. We had a chat about it earlier today. Stress eating chocolate eyeballs sounds fun and an appropriate snack for their first medical essay. DS sent me a photo of him in his scrubs with a stethoscope round his neck the other day. I actually had to do a double take as he looked so grown up.

withiceplease · 30/10/2021 22:40

@LonelySock
Thank you so much. I was not certain as hadn't checked her red book and presumed it'd be covered but I'll get her on to it asap
There was a dreadful tale on MN by a woman whose son had died from meningitis c and she found when eventually clearing his stuff a form from school about it in his school bag (this was prior to current vac schedule). DD1 had to get hers from GP and I was trying to send DD2 but the vac schedule had changed by then she found

withiceplease · 30/10/2021 22:49

I actually thought the '@'s' were going to be berating me for being unmumsnetty and doing my DC laundry! Obviously, all DC should be doing their own as soon as they are able to walk to the machine and open it Hmm

LaLaFlottes · 30/10/2021 23:43

@withiceplease I agree with you and doing washing in halls isn’t fun! I also told DD to bring hers home with her when she came for the weekend Smile it’s nice to help them out

LaLaFlottes · 30/10/2021 23:45

@opoponax scrubs and a stethoscope sounds very grown up! Wow! It’s so lovely getting their updates isn’t it - softens the blow of missing them Smile

Powergower · 05/11/2021 10:13

Lovely to read the updates. Ds is also settled and really loving uni life. He's made a lovely group of friends, joined lots of clubs, and is loving his course despite being in from 9-5 most days. I'm the beginning he was ringing once a week but now he FaceTimes every day for a quick chat. Miss him like mad but so happy to see him out in the world and enjoying his new life.

opoponax · 05/11/2021 12:08

That's great to hear @Powergower. Not that long until the Christmas break now either.

Millylovespuddles · 05/11/2021 15:29

All good here too... DD settled well and loving her new life. They have a heavy workload, which is what she expected, but still has a lot of online lectures - there are more than 300 in her year, so can't be in-person for obvious reasons. Small group stuff is f2f, but I'm hoping things will improve with time. Her case-based learning group of 10, has 3 who were deferred from 2020 after the CAGs reassessment, so hopefully the knock-on effect will start to ease this year.

opoponax · 05/11/2021 17:43

Hi there @Millylovespuddles. Excellent news. It is great to hear that your DD is really happy.

Card1gan · 06/07/2022 23:46

Just wondering how your DCs have got on this year? DD was a little shaky in the first term but settled and loved the whole Uni experience since Christmas. She worked hard for the end of year exams and was hugely relieved to find out this week that she's passed and it's all systems go into year 2, what a relief! Hope it's gone as well for your DC too.

withiceplease · 07/07/2022 09:36

Waited to post @Card1gan until DD had results - passed them all so she's relieved and now she'll be off with her boyf for a 3 week holiday which she wouldn't have done if she had retakes. All sorted with house for next year although she's more friendly with different folks now.
She's looking forward to sorting her own food next year after halls and has decided on a gym which is where she's spent most of her free time since the first term.
Glad your DD has got into her stride 👍

Card1gan · 08/07/2022 19:15

@WithIcePlease Congratulations to your DD. I hope she enjoys her holidays before the hard work of year 2 starts.

LaFlottes · 09/07/2022 15:55

@Card1gan and @WithIcePlease lovely to see your updates and congratulations to your DC. I’m so glad it’s all working out.

DD has had a wonderful first year at Sheffield. She wasn’t a huge fan of freshers week and I think was kind of glad when that ended! But once the course started she was in her element!

She had a decent flat in halls with nice people and has made really great friends. She’s sharing with 4 other medics and 1 maths students next year in a house which is a stone’s throw from the Hospital/Medical School.

She passed all of her assessments and exams - phew!! So pleased for her as she worked very hard.

It’s so lovely having her home for the summer!

opoponax · 11/07/2022 16:18

Great to hear that all is going so well for our mini medics. DS is loving everything about Newcastle - med school, university and city - and has made some great friends. Exams all passed and a summer of fun now before buckling down for Year 2. We have another summer of UCAT though as DD is now applying for med.

WithIcePlease · 07/09/2022 21:27

DD being charged £46 for DBS check 😳
I've recently started to pay - my trust paid before directly- and it's £13 a year for my enhanced DBS check
No idea how this is justified

Anyone else found this?

fiftiesmum · 08/09/2022 08:26

Make sure you register the DBs - then any update needed will be cheaper and quicker.
The university one covers placements and once qualified the trust usually pays.

WithIcePlease · 08/09/2022 10:06

Worked it out - £46 because it was her first one from that organisation.

It's a nonsense really. I have enhanced DBS which I can access online to show but to go and hear children read in school I need another one - fair enough I won't have to pay for that but I have no clue, when it's the same checks from exactly the same national service. The DBS man on phone agreed but said employers like their name on it.
Having said that, nurses going to new job in the same trust have to have another one done 🙄

LaLaFlottes · 07/09/2023 16:20

Hello everyone - seeing lots on line about the 2023 students about to start, it made me a little nostalgic and I thought I'd pop a note on here just to say hello 😊
I hope all of your DC are still enjoying Uni life and enjoying their studies so far x
