So for Sheffield medicine course I need doorstopper black trainers...anything important and out of the ordinary? Like things that only ex students knows?

mumsneedwine · 14/08/2021 20:58

@opoponax I'd wait for a stethoscope as you'll v likely get a discount voucher. But usually they get the Lithum II or III - one with peads option is best I've been told.
Sketchers seem to be footwear of choice. White surgery crocs at some point too (otherwise you get what's there so if size 5 might be in a 9).
Some short sleeved tops for rounds as not all wards wear scrubs, and no long sleeves allowed.
A decent printer and pens (lots as consultants nick them).

withiceplease · 14/08/2021 21:53

I have no list but I'm sure it will be fine
Waiting for maybe voucher for stethoscope
Re theatre clogs - locally all need to be communal since covid as all sterilised and no one has their own anymore here abouts

mumsneedwine · 14/08/2021 22:38

@withiceplease DD has her own - bought a few weeks ago after she almost fell into a stomach wearing size 9s 😊. Hospital do all the washing of scrubs and shoes.

withiceplease · 14/08/2021 22:48

That sounds a better arrangement than here. I just told DD to make sure to be early so she may have a chance of a little pair

Monkey2001 · 15/08/2021 00:19

@opoponax they all get the Littman Classic III - www.medisave.co.uk/diagnostics-equipment/littmann-stethoscopes/littmann-classic-iii-stethoscopes.html

opoponax · 15/08/2021 12:51

Thank you all. We'll hold fire on the stethoscope. Funny about the theatre clogs - DS has little room for manoeuvre with his huge feet.

I have not seen a discussion about medical students getting theatre close before. DS2 might have an issue (if he gets in) as he is another one with huge feet. Wonder if they provide size 13?
sergeantmajormum · 15/08/2021 14:54

Clogs must be school-dependent - not needed in DD’s first 2 years?

mumsneedwine · 15/08/2021 15:43

Apologies. Mine is now a 4th year ! She was 'helping' with a C section and fell over her own feet in massive clogs, almost landing in poor ladies womb. Doctor suggested her own and explained how to get them cleaned by hospital. So no rush on those (but seems they never have your size) 😊.

withiceplease · 19/08/2021 12:31

Frustrated here
I can't pay either deposit or instalment for accommodation that's accepted as no bill on the portal yet because of incentive scheme to move.
She's off on holiday in the week leading to the deadline for payment and the day itself and concerned that she won't be able to transfer that amount of money from her bank when overseas

Millylovespuddles · 26/08/2021 22:08

I hope everyone's busy making exciting plans....

Ours have taken a step backwards with uni sending an email yesterday saying their accommodation is oversubscribed, so unallocated students can go to an alternative private halls (2.5 miles away) or stay on the uni list but can't be guaranteed accommodation till Christmas, if at all😕. This is despite their statement saying that they were proudly able to offer university accommodation to all 1st years...

Pretty gutted tbh.

LaLaFlottes · 26/08/2021 22:32

@Millylovespuddles that’s rubbish Sad sorry to hear that. How has it been decided which first years get accommodation and which don’t?
So you think DD will go for the private halls option? Maybe if a bunch of them are going there it could be ok? Sorry you’re having to deal with this Flowers

opoponax · 26/08/2021 23:08

That is awful @Millylovespuddles. I hope your DD is okay and that it all works out for her. I've heard about lots of issues at Bristol too with some students being sent to Bath and Weston-super-Mare and requests to double bunk etc. Problems at Exeter too as students deferring from last year getting first choices and a lot of Y13s not getting accommodation they wanted and spilling over off campus. Such a shame after the year they have all had.

Millylovespuddles · 27/08/2021 07:59

@LaLaFlottes first come policy - not that great when you don't get an offer till early April! But she hasn't felt it would be a problem with their 'we accommodate all first years' statement. They have changed their policy at some stage from prioritising by distance, to any postcode, so guessing that won't have helped.

Mind you, on her fb chat, a girl from Canada got the same email, so whilst DD's not happy, at least we are familiar with the city.

It has dulled her enthusiasm big time, so will mull over what to do for a couple of days.

Powergower · 27/08/2021 08:47

@Millylovespuddles I'm sorry to hear that. How stressful for your daughter. We're also still waiting to hear about accommodation and his term starts on the 13th.

LaLaFlottes · 27/08/2021 09:19

@Millylovespuddles that’s such a shame and first come first served, whilst fair in a lot of circumstances, really isn’t when offers are going out at all different times - even with an early offer some applicants were probably waiting for decisions from other Universities too. Like you say though, the “accommodation for all first years” should have meant DD was taken care of regardless.

Such a shame it’s put a dampener on things - but I hope that’s temporary and either something changes or the alternative accommodation is actually ok in the end. Flowers

opoponax · 28/08/2021 12:52

Calling veteran medic parents please! DS has got to order his scrubs, lab coat and name badge today. He is thinking that name badge should be the shortened forename he is known by but should he have surname on this too?

mumsneedwine · 28/08/2021 12:56

@opoponax mine never had to do that or have badge (even now on wards), but she says her ID has her full name on. Is it the yellow 'Hello my name is' badge ?

mumsneedwine · 28/08/2021 12:59

@opoponax lots of wards don't wear scrubs (need short sleeved tops), and hospitals supply them in some places. DD does have her own sets too (including a fab rainbow set). Comfy shoes is DDs tip - Sketchers walk seem to be choice of nhs.

opoponax · 28/08/2021 13:11

Thanks @ mumsneedwine. Just checked with him and he said he has put his full name on his formal ID (the photo one) but this name badge is the "Hello my name is" initiative badge to wear in GP practices etc. so I guess the first name he is known by is probably fine for that. He's just checked the form again and there is space for a surname too but not sure if that is compulsory.

Powergower · 29/08/2021 05:55

Has anyone's uni mentioned anything Argot vaccinations? There's nothing from ds uni and I'm wondering whether he should get a gp printout of all his vaccinations to date to take with him. I thought the med school would confirm what jabs he needs to have done.

emummy · 29/08/2021 09:49

Dd had to complete a medical form for Glasgow and get a list of vaccinations from her GP for them.

opoponax · 29/08/2021 12:09

@Powergower DS had to submit the print out of vaccinations from his GP. The vaccinations he had in school were not on the GP's system but I had a note of them in his red book. It took a few days and several emails to get it all complete and accurate.

redtulip12 · 29/08/2021 14:23

My dd had to send list of vaccinations and her summary care record. Her Gp printed them out for her and she scanned them in to email. She will take the printed version with her. All her school vaccines were on there too!
