Fingers crossed for those final offers coming in!

Hope no one minds me starting the new thread...

DD seems quite relaxed - sending me pictures from the wildlife park she went to today Grin

@Powergower that’s good DS’ Uni is getting all organised for after results day. I know what you mean about them still having to get the grades but it sounds like the University is expecting most of them to perhaps? You never know there might even be a bit of flexibility this year!

LaLaFlottes · 04/08/2021 20:13

It’s strange to think the Universities will have their results from today Shock

Powergower · 04/08/2021 22:13

@LaLaFlottes yes it does seem crazy doesn't it. I really hope that as most unis have cut the number of offers this year they'll be more flexible if grades are dropped as they haven't really over offered like previous years.

Monkey2001 · 05/08/2021 00:01

I hope all your DC get the grades for their offers, but I think it will be super hard on the people who didn't get offers this year if the universities are more flexible than usual. On the whole we are expecting generous grades, so I really think most will meet the offers anyway. Hope there will be movement on reserve lists for the people anxiously hoping to salvage something from this year's bloodbath.

LaLaFlottes · 05/08/2021 07:53

@Monkey2001 agree I do hope everyone meets their grades and then perhaps universities holding spaces for insurance choices may be able to use their reserve list which would be amazing - fingers crossed all round.

SATSmadness · 05/08/2021 10:09

@Monkey2001 and @ LaLaFlottes

Given the Exeter medicine offer holders being asked to defer to 2022 in return for a £17,000 bribe (when the value of a year's free accommodation is included), I cannot see any hope of dd's reserve list place turning into an offer/place this year.

Monkey2001 · 05/08/2021 12:30

@satsmadness I think Sheffield will give since places to reserve list because it is such a popular insurance choice and most people should get their firm this year. I would say not probable, but distinctly possible, depending on where she is on the list.

LaLaFlottes · 05/08/2021 21:45

Thanks @mumsneedwine

That’s really interesting. So is this is relation to the expectation that more students than normal will make their grades?

So maybe to avoid people being asked to defer?

mumsneedwine · 05/08/2021 22:10

@LaLaFlottes Unis got grades yesterday. It seems a way of avoiding clearing for those who have grades. As long as happy to go anywhere then it's good news.

LaLaFlottes · 05/08/2021 22:24

Oh yes of course - Unis have them don’t they.

I don’t quite understand though - will the extra places be for people on reserve lists who get the grades?

Or will these places go into clearing for people to apply for?

Good news though!

mumsneedwine · 05/08/2021 22:29

Think it sounds like people who get the grades but don't get a space. So v likely reserve lists 🤞🤞

LaLaFlottes · 05/08/2021 22:42

Oh fingers crossed - that would be amazing for people. I really hope that’s the case.

LaLaFlottes · 05/08/2021 23:07

I wonder how this part will work? Matching students who meet their grades to unfulfilled places at medical schools with space?

“The Government has also worked with UCAS, the Office for Students and the medical and dental school process to ensure there is a system for 2021 that matches students who meet their grades to unfulfilled places at medical and dental schools with space.”

Monkey2001 · 05/08/2021 23:12

I think it looks like too many offer holders for the grades, so the caps were relaxed for the year.

Monkey2001 · 05/08/2021 23:18

Yup, slightly different spin from the Guardian www.theguardian.com/education/2021/aug/05/grade-inflation-forces-ministers-pay-extra-medical-school-places-england

Monkey2001 · 06/08/2021 10:00

Very interesting post from PQ on TSR. I think she may work for UCAS, she is certainly a reliable UCAS expert.

*

I don't have the full stats but UK wide (so not just England which is what the spin/u turn is about) there are 2,900 UF and 10,200 CF applicants for preclin med and dentistry. So ~13,100 in total across the UK which is more than the intake last year.
BUT - for med for example there were 19,900 offers made in 2021 v 22,600 in 2020. So even though there was a 20% increase in applications there was a 12% reduction in offers made. That's turned into 11,700 UF & CF for med v 11,750 in 2020. So med schools reduced their offer making but didn't take into account that if offers are reduced across the sector then that means fewer applicants with multiple offers to choose from and an increase in firm acceptances from the smaller pool of applicants that each individual med school made offers to.

mumsneedwine · 06/08/2021 10:31

@Monkey2001 it is going to be an issue I think as we saw so few offers this year, most had 1 or 2, and so all these turned into acceptances. No one turned anything down. So Unis have too many offer holders, have now seen grades and are panicking a bit. All v well taking more students into the courses as long as they can guarantee them the clinical placements. It is a mess. Fingers crossed it means everyone on here has got their grades 🤞🤞

withiceplease · 06/08/2021 10:50

I'm so so worried that DD won't get that A in maths 😢
Meanwhile, I was badly hit by a car in late June and won't be walking until October 🙄 so I won't be able to drop her at university if she does get the grades. At least I'm not missing any holidays

mumsneedwine · 06/08/2021 11:15

@withiceplease 🤞🤞 that grades are what she needs. It's horrible waiting.
Hope you get better soon. And you can go visit her as soon as you are well and she'll be able to proudly show you round. Dropping them off is horrible anyway. Sending positive thoughts and a v big 🤗. I'm planning on giving lots and lots of 🤗 on Tuesday at school.

MaddieElla · 06/08/2021 11:49

@withiceplease so sorry to hear about your accident, that sounds awful. I hope your recovery is going well.

We too are worried about the one subject. Sad

Hello everyone, good to see this thread becoming active again. Just caught up. My Dd has not done anything about a DBS check (although recently done one for a local docs to allow her to be a Covid vaccinator) or anything regarding occupational health. Was she supposed to and if so where do I get the details. Hope she's not missed something!!

mumsneedwine · 06/08/2021 14:33

@redtulip12 don't worry, every Uni does things differently. Mine didn't do anything until she had her results. And ended up having all her jabs in first few weeks. If they make the grades their place is safe.

redtulip12 · 06/08/2021 15:16

Thanks @mumsneedwine that's a relief!

Powergower · 07/08/2021 11:43

All the info about grade inflation and extra places is adding to the stress. It's difficult to work out what's going on behind the scenes. Reading some reports it suggests everyone with an offer should be ok, but then I'll read something else and it suggests there's been too many offers for places.

Fingers crossed for everyone on here. I'm worried about ds making his grades as he missed so much schooling and one of his mocks wasn't great.
