Accommodation/college update = no change, DS still waiting to hear!

chopc · 27/08/2021 20:33

Sorry for all those still waiting- it's horrendous

par05 · 27/08/2021 21:41

Hi sorry all, its very confusing, she thought she had wrong course the pgce instead of English lit, which she has emailed them back but has been told to wait until college allocation 🤯 just stressing about it making it worse, have to wait until 1st Sept.to find out more.

SpringSparrow · 27/08/2021 22:10

@par05 so when your dd got the confirmation message from UCAS confirming her place did it say English Literature? Had she applied for the PGCE? I know that Durham sometimes offers a place on a different course, at the offer stage.

GoTrevs · 27/08/2021 23:21

@Peaseblossum22 I loved your story about Deborah Lavin! When I was at Trevs in the late '90s one of the boat club boats was called Debs, named after her, but I've never known anything about her before!

For everyone worried about DC being unable to select modules until a college is allocated, is it known for fact that they have capacity limits? I don't want to go all 'in my day' as if it's fact, however in the past era when I was there, I never knew of anyone having such an issue. I really hope it's the same still for all of your DC.

Peaseblossum22 · 27/08/2021 23:57

@GoTrevs in my day she was colloquially known as ‘big debs’😮

GoTrevs · 28/08/2021 00:05

@Peaseblossum22 Well she was quite a wide boat Grin

par05 · 28/08/2021 09:53

@SpringSparrow just asked dd now, she definitely had English lit as offered place.

SpringSparrow · 28/08/2021 11:50

@par05 so when she had the confirmation of place through ucas it said English Lit? So what had she had that makes her feel that it’s been changed?

LeiatheSchnauzer · 28/08/2021 16:31

Dd has done her enrolment and module selection today. Hopefully it is all correct. I don't think there was anything that implied the modules were limited in any way. She had till around the 27th (I think) September to complete all the detail and there didn't seem to be any advantage in getting it all done now.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 28/08/2021 17:21

Ds only had 1 option module for his course which was either higher level - you've done A level Computer Science or lower level, you haven't done A level Computer Science. His other module was a maths one as he loves maths. As you can imagine there were a lot of maths slots as it will overlap with lots of courses.

Durham have put out a pretty Welcome to Durham 2021 video

LeiatheSchnauzer · 28/08/2021 17:50

@OnTheBenchOfDoom, that video is very nice.
Dd found the modules fairly clear once she had found the handbook but the timetable was intense; she hasn't worked out if there were any clashes as she says she has to do all the modules so it will just have to work!

321zyx · 29/08/2021 21:04

A quick plea - is there anyone out there who's DC are still waiting for accommodation allocation? I'm trying to be completely 'hands off' but this is beginning to really get to me (let alone DS)!! Given it's a Bank Holiday (less Scotland) the extra day is really adding to the stress! I totally realise this isn't relevant but DS stated college (Bailey) on application, changed priority mid way through the year (also Bailey - when all were asked to resubmit) but was 'allocated' original choice. As yet he's heard nothing and it's getting a bit stressful. He did email admissions yesterday and after an automated reply received another one that was slightly more personal but was still a 'cut and paste' ...........anyone?

NCTDN · 29/08/2021 22:12

Ok so question for all of you with children going to Durham this year. Did they all make the grades that the offer stated? Were the offers the same as those listed on the website?
DD is very keen for in a years time, but I'm concerned she might not get what they are asking. Is it worth applying?

chopc · 29/08/2021 22:16

@321zyx DS has been allocated a college but wanted to give you a message of support here. Does he have his heart set on a particular college?

Hopefully all will hear by the 1st as they said but I can totally understand the stress

chopc · 29/08/2021 22:17

@NCTDN my DS got offered the grades as stated on website and met his offer. Durham has a reputation for not being lenient. HTH

Longtimenewsee · 29/08/2021 22:25

@NCTDN my Dc exceeded the entry requirements for the course as listed on website and also their individual offer as it was contextual (so lower than that on website)

Longtimenewsee · 29/08/2021 22:29

yep still waiting @321zyx

Braveheart35 · 29/08/2021 22:56

DS got the standard offer for History & exceeded it. Of the 5 holding offers (mix of subjects), 3 met or exceeded and 2 missed by one grade. Rejected with no discussion. My feeling is Durham are not flexible on grade requirements. Maybe that’s just the year though?

chopc · 30/08/2021 07:55

Would anyone know if the beds would have room for under bed storage?

Peaseblossum22 · 30/08/2021 08:21

I just googled ds college rooms images and a room tour on YouTube popped up and various photos, it does seem that they do have space in his college

Vargas · 30/08/2021 08:29

Ds still waiting...luckily he's a lot more patient than me.

KingscoteStaff · 30/08/2021 09:25

Hatfield have room for under bed boxes - DD had 2 of the flat plastic boxes from Asda - one for a spare set of bedding and towels and one for gym kit.

OP posts:
chopc · 30/08/2021 09:56

Thank you. The video I looked at there wasn't any under bed storage at Collingwood..... I guess he can ask?

SpringSparrow · 30/08/2021 11:32

My dd’s room had under bed storage, but the base of the bed was solid and you lifted up the mattress to access the storage, you couldn’t slide anything under the bed.
