I think it was further towards Golders Green than JW3. I remember the shops at the bottom including an old fashioned butchers with sawdust on the floor!

chopc · 15/01/2021 12:34

@SATSmadness I didn't know you can do medicine at Durham. Your DD applied for Mediicne right?

@Tenpastseven thank you for the rec. will add it to the list

On 24th eve I will tell my DS that no matter the outcome on 25th, he is a brilliant young man whom we are very proud of and will succeed in life no matter what ......... thing is he has heard it all before so not sure if it will make a difference

Revengeofthepangolins · 15/01/2021 12:42

@BigWoollyJumpers. Another historian considering Exeter in this household (vs UCL currently). I wish the latter would make the effort to put a bit more pizazz into their online presentation of what is on offer.

SATSmadness · 15/01/2021 13:12

@chopc . That's precisely why she didn't apply Confused !

Beetlesand · 15/01/2021 13:31

So sorry to @Jano69 . What a difficult time for you Flowers

mikeandike · 15/01/2021 13:31

@Jano69 That's horrendous, I’m so sorry Flowers

mikeandike · 15/01/2021 13:34

Is anybody else still waiting on Bristol? DD has been on hold for seemingly ages. Quite a few of her friends have offers so she’s getting a bit worried now Confused.

Beetlesand · 15/01/2021 13:36

@quest1on- yes Dd is finding it all quite hard atm. It’s so stressful and so drawn out and with much less support than usual. There doesn’t seem to be much certainty to cling to atm. What a crappy time to be a year 13

beethecrackon24995 · 15/01/2021 13:55

bendmeover my dd is still waiting to hear from Durham. She will be doing English and said that they wouldn't have heard yet but now (as well as Cambridge) it doesn't feel at all likely and I thus see her at York (she has offers for York, Exeter & Bristol)

bendmeoverbackwards · 15/01/2021 14:31

How is your dd today @mikeandike? And yours @dontdointernetbut? I hope you've managed to talk to her a bit now.

LaundryFairy · 15/01/2021 14:42

@Revengeofthepangolins I know what you mean about the UCL website. DS also applied to history there (hasn't heard by the way) and he was mostly excited by the incredible range of courses on offer. They also don't differentiate between ancient and modern so students can study across the whole range of history. That combined with a very strong commitment to giving individual feedback on all written work and way they make the most of the amazing museums of London really appealed. I'd suggest your DS dig deep into the details of UCL programme to see if it is what he is looking for.

bendmeoverbackwards · 15/01/2021 14:58

@LaundryFairy I went to UCL and loved it. Just fantastic to be a student in London. My halls were a 10 min walk from my department and you have all the museums, theatres, attractions etc on your doorstep.

My dd really liked the look of the course at UCL but what with living in the London suburbs and going into town regularly, she wanted to experience living somewhere else. She did half regret not applying after Tuesday's results but somehow I can't see her there, it's just too close to home. She's always been very independent, wants to travel and stretch her wings.

Revengeofthepangolins · 15/01/2021 15:01

@LaundryFairy The UCL history course looks fab, especially the flexibility to range right back into ancient, which he loves whilst having absolutely no wish to do more Latin, hence only applying for straight history courses. And I like the look of the early courses aimed at orienting them in what is needed for university-level history, and all that info on the course is indeed there if one looks for it.

It is the more fluffy stuff about societies and social level sport etc I feel is missing. My hesitation (and I think his) about UCL is the whole London university thing - is it harder to find a community/make friends/do university activities/ have a university experience? Does it end up being like being a young adult in London whose job happens to be going to lectures and seminars and writing essays?

All probably reflects a failure of imagination on my part, having gone to a collegiate set up, but I think it is a common concern, and that they could do more to make things look more fun. Probably rather frivolous of me, but these things are quite a big part of the decision-making. After the rather cr*p last year and half - virtually no nice sixth form experience or freedom - being able to have some fun alongside the work at university seems more important than ever.

chopc · 15/01/2021 15:25

@Revengeofthepangolins also a UCL graduate - had the time of my life being a student in central london. To be honest I was very naive when I wen to Uni and got the impression that London was full of students given that we always seem to find friends in clubs, bars and restaurants. I don't know if they still have it but UCL cocktail nights on Thursday is when the whole Univ of London tends to mingle. I absolutely loved my time there.

DD is still on hold as well. I think that was her first UCAS response, which was a bit of a knock to her confidence.
bendmeoverbackwards · 15/01/2021 15:39

Yes to Thursday cocktail night *@chopc! When were you there? I did a Chemistry degree 1992-95 and lived in Ramsay Hall and Hughes Parry Hall.

chopc · 15/01/2021 15:50

Oh my gosh I lived in Ramsay Hall as well in my first year (started in September 94)! So you must have joined the year after.

chopc · 15/01/2021 15:50

Sorry should have tagged you @bendmeoverbackwards

Revengeofthepangolins · 15/01/2021 15:51

Thanks UCL allumni - that is encouraging!

How funny, I remember my room vividly - 404 in London block.
chopc · 15/01/2021 16:09

London block rings a bell but not the room number Smile

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 15/01/2021 16:37

Firstly Flowers for BigWJ and Jan just a completely awful time for you.

Then Cake for Bend Happy Birthday.

They say late applicants will have a fair chance but how can that be true if offers go out from October?

I think if you have candidates who are predicted higher grades than your entry and they are strong, self motivated learners as demonstrated on their personal statements then a university would offer to them from October onward and before the January deadline.

My friend's DD is looking to live at home, her 3 local RG unis that she can commute to want either AAA or AAA she is predicted 3 x A. She has offers from 2 of them already. Luckily she has an Aunt who lives right near one of them who has said she can sleep over any time she has an early lecture instead of commuting in!

Chilldonaldchill · 15/01/2021 17:43

Sorry to those of you who have lost loved ones in the last couple of days. I work in the NHS and it is horrific.
I'm glad for those of you whose children are beginning to feel a bit more positive about other options x

WarmAndco3y · 15/01/2021 17:54

@Jano69 and @BigWoollyJumpers do sorry for your losses. BWJ thinking about your mum and praying she has a turnaround in her health, and makes a good recovery. Virtual hugs to you both.

@bendmeoverbackwards hope you are having a lovely birthday. Enjoy and hope DH & DC came through for you Smile

Just over a week to go for C news
