Hopefully this is in the right place?

Apologies, a late re-emergence on to the thread here and so very sorry to hear of some family losses.

Unfortunately DS received a 'redirection' from Ox for history (can someone explain when that became a 'thing'....I'm a down to earth 'rejection' girl myself!?). He was totally upbeat about the whole thing, whereas I was actually far more disappointed than I expected to be (as others have said, the margins are very slim)!

Moving on I find it interesting, but perhaps totally random, that he received a Durham offer one week prior to Ox results - do they really not communicate (I think it was mentioned somewhere previously)?

Not seen any recent mentions here - have anyone's DC received an offer from St Andrews or Edinburgh yet?

Chocomel · 15/01/2021 20:28

Congrats on the Durham offer!

I totally don't understand Edinburgh offers. My son applied twice - two rejections, and the last one was the same year as an unconditional for Imperial. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Chocomel - Edinburgh have this week asked DS to complete a 'nationality form'! I accept there's the Scottish fee situation however we live in England which is quite clear on his application. Today they then asked for a copy of his passport, whereas St Andrews seem happy to accept that his 'English' address is genuine!

MarchingFrogs · 15/01/2021 22:38

@bendmeoverbackwards, universities have to respond to all on-time apications by 20th May. If the applicant has received all their responses by that date, they must reply (i.e. set Firm and Insurance) by 10th June.

DD received an offer from Edinburgh on Thursday, contingent upon her not being a Scottish citizen. I assume like @321zyx’s DS she’ll be asked for a copy of her passport soon.

par05 · 16/01/2021 08:33

Waiting for the 25th and getting more nervous, dd on the other hand is fine, has now decided that if no from C will go to durham.
My only problem is it's so far away, we live in Wales. I think when she applied we hadn't really thought much of where else, she would go, but as the time getting closer we are now.

321zyx · 16/01/2021 08:37

@pepperaunt good news on the Edinburgh offer, glad to hear they are trickling out.

pepperaunt · 16/01/2021 08:41

Thank you @321zyx, and congratulations to your DS! Are you also waiting to hear from Cambridge?

321zyx · 16/01/2021 08:43

@pepperaunt - no we're in the post O phase now - onwards and upwards!

Chocomel · 16/01/2021 09:01

@pepperaunt can you tell me more about this offer? Is your DD a British student? Or an International one? As I said previously - I've never worked out how Edinburgh do things!

@Chocomel we live in the U.K. (American) but DD has dual U.K./US citizenship. Haven’t actually seen the language of the offer but DD deigned to read it to us 😁 As I recall it was along the lines of: this offer is based on your being a U.K. citizen, not a Scottish citizen, and may be rescinded if Scottish. I guess they’re liking the thought of our tuition payments 🤷🏻‍♀️

DahliaMacNamara · 16/01/2021 09:20

What's the Scottish citizen thing all about, out of interest? Would a DC have a different offer according to the place of birth on their passport rather than the qualifications they were studying for? Doesn't sound right.

chopc · 16/01/2021 09:23

@DahliaMacNamara I think Uni is free for Scots? But all other students have to pay?

DahliaMacNamara · 16/01/2021 09:24

To clarify my question, haing x-posted with pepperaunt, surely proof of address is the salient point on tuition fee payment.

Chocomel · 16/01/2021 09:35

We've had similar - we live in mainland Europe so when DS got an offer from a UK music college they asked that we prove nationality before they can confirm fees. (£22k international VS £9k UK). But the whole Scottish (Free) Vs English (paying) makes me wonder if Scottish universities have drastically reduced the number of Scottish students being offered places. That's for another thread though I guess. Sorry for the derail! (And thanks for the replies).

Your residence (or parents’ residence) for the last three years matters, rather than your place of birth.

Chocomel · 16/01/2021 09:38

(Although surely that's some kind of discrimination? Imagine if English universities offered on the condition that you weren't Scottish...)

OP posts:
pepperaunt · 16/01/2021 09:45

I’m hoping DD doesn’t feel her offer is “devalued somehow.

Chocomel · 16/01/2021 09:53

@pepperaunt oh she shouldn't. Edinburgh is a wonderful university and I adore the city. I've only heard great things from students who went there.

OP posts:
NiamCinnOir · 16/01/2021 09:58

Scottish students don’t pay tuition fees if they go to a Scottish university and ‘Scottish’ is defined as being resident in Scotland for the preceding three years. Northern Irish students pay a lower rate of tuition fees if they go to university in Northern Ireland. That’s why students from other parts of the UK and international students are welcomed, because they bring with them higher fees. Education is one of the things devolved governments can make their own decisions on.

ClarasZoo · 16/01/2021 10:19

Does anyone know how they will find out on 25th? Will it be an email or, perhaps earlier, the UCAS track updating?

Chocomel · 16/01/2021 10:26

@ClarasZoo for Ox, my DS got an email from UCAS at 8h30 saying that there had been an update in his offers and to check his online account.

I read (it was on tsr but a post by the admissions team from one of the colleges) that they're not sending letters this year (a few colleges might but not generally). Students will receive a y/n email during the day (9-5) and UCAS won't update for several days after that.

Apparently Cambridge are not informing UCAS until a few days later?
