UEA (2019) dealing with the unexpected and on to 2nd Year

New thread for the parents of 2019 freshers. Thank you all for sticking around!
At the start of the year we never would have guessed the topics that are currently being discussed in this page but I'm grateful we still have each other to help navigate our way through this with our DC.
With the emptying of 1st year rooms seemingly on hold for many until the end of lockdown our thoughts will soon turn to 2nd year accommodation and whether term is likely to start as normal in September.

We haven't heard about paying anything for the Ziggurats but I will ask DS to check if he ever gets out of bed.
In the meantime, I am seriously considering driving to Norwich on Thursday to empty the room out. I am seeing horror stories on a FB page about other unis where the kitchen contents have just been stuck in a skip. Both DS have most of their course work and their possessions in Norwich and its becoming a problem.
Does anyone have any idea how the Police are reacting to this in terms of "essential journeys"?. Its 1 hr 45 minutes journey for us.
Hope everyone is OK 👌

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/05/2020 09:52

@sluj DS is in a Zig as well and no I've not heard anything.

@sluj maybe see what the government decideds in terms of easing lockdown restrictions next week before making a decision about going up to Norwich.

Agree with you though that I would not be at all happy about just having DS's new(ish) kitchen stuff binned without his involvement. Or any of his bedding, or brand new winter coat....

juicy0 · 02/05/2020 10:49

I'm sorry if this is a silly question but having looked online for an answer I'm more confused than I was before!
Does my DD have to reapply for her tuition fee loan each year? She doesn't have a maintenance loan only the tuition fee loan.
Thanks in advance

OP posts:
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/05/2020 11:36

@juicy0 I think you probably do as your DD will still be receiving tuition fees loan - deadline is 22 June 2020

icanbewhatiwant · 02/05/2020 11:43

So has no one else got to pay then? Paston house is on university ground the same as ziggs etc. Apparently it doesn't say what the payment is for. Just that it's outstanding. Everyone in their flat has the payment. He wondered if it was because it wasn't clean enough. But as you guys haven't emptied rooms it can't be that.

Yes I'm sure you have to apply for the loan each year. Ds has just done his again. There's no way of changing income on ours. So that's annoying as it was considerably less 2018/2019.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/05/2020 11:56

DS not yet up so haven't had the opportunity to ask yet @icanbewhatiwant - will report back though. Not entirely sure that DS is keeping a close eye on emails.

sluj · 02/05/2020 12:56

DS has just got up and has an outstanding balance of £201 for accommodation which has just appeared. He is sending an email to ask what its for Confused

juicy0 · 02/05/2020 12:56

Thank you @NewModelArmyMayhem18 I'll get her to take a look.

With regard to outstanding accommodation payments we had to pay £77 which was the balance for the year as we handed the keys back on 24 March. If your DC has terminated the contract and you paid in Termly/monthly instalments it could be that the amount due is the balance remaining.

OP posts:
icanbewhatiwant · 02/05/2020 13:03

So it sounds like some of you have payments. We posted keys back around 20th March. Ds had an email confirming his contract had finished. One of the girls in his flat messaged them all to let them know there was an outstanding amount. Ds wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/05/2020 13:15

Yes the payment could very well be to do with whether our young people submitted the accommodation form there was to complete (and send back) by the 5th April (?not sure if that's correct) deadline.

sluj · 02/05/2020 13:20

DS has completed his form in time and also pays termly so we are not sure what this is for. He has asked by email so I will let you know if he hears anything back.

GoldenRuby · 02/05/2020 13:28

DS has an outstanding balance of £243 (Village plus) but no explanation of what it is for. We haven't been able to return to Norwich to clear the room due to the lockdown, but he did fill the form is to say he wants to surrender his lease and this was acknowledged. Poor that there is no explanation of what this is for.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/05/2020 13:44

DS hasn't received an email BUT he just logged into Evision (finance) and there is an amount of £201 noted as outstanding. What's that about I wonder? It might have been useful to tell them all.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/05/2020 14:05

I wonder whether it's because the payments are equalised across three terms BUT terms 1 and 2 are longer, so the extra amount due is a carry over from a previous term's rent?

That they all owe money would suggest that it's some 'legacy' payment...Interestingly though it didn't have a red asterisk next to it (which implies it's not due?).

juicy0 · 02/05/2020 14:25

Thank you for your help. DD has successfully completed her application for her tuition fee loan for next year :)
I'm encouraging her to get all these little 'life admin' tasks and to organise this years work while we are in lockdown so that when we are allowed out she is free to enjoy it and nothing will be overlooked.
She's got an exam online next week and three essays to submit and then she's done for the year apparently (Geog)

OP posts:
icanbewhatiwant · 02/05/2020 14:41

Yes ds has no email or explanation. He cleared his flat and sent keys by return date.

Do let us know if anyone gets an explanation.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/05/2020 16:29

So the info is sitting in their Evision accounts but no emails received - is that correct? Do we know how long the amounts have been detailed in the former - a day/days/weeks?

icanbewhatiwant · 02/05/2020 16:57

Yes in evision. Apparently it just says outstanding amount. No other explanation. He definitely sent everything back on time and cleared the room etc. He's not had any emails or anything. As I said earlier he souring have noticed it, but another person in his flat told them all.

Itscoldouthere · 04/05/2020 08:27

I’ll have to ask DS to look in evision, I don’t think he’s been very good at looking at anything at the moment.

We’ve not made much progress on how to move forward yet.

It’s all so difficult the know if they will even be starting back in September. So much talk about some universities being in real trouble, it’s all getting so depressing, it’s been getting to me lately.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/05/2020 08:46

It says it's due by the 20th May so no idea what it's for. I would have expected that they'd receive emails.

Has anyone's DC paid it - what about the flatmates that tipped your DS off @icanbewhatiwant?

Itscoldouthere at least your DS still has six months to come up with a plan. It may give him the valuable time to think through what he wants to do.

Could he grit his teeth, stick out his first degree (mindful that hopefully the biology will get more interesting in Yr 2) and then consider doing an Masters in Military History at some near future stage? That would be one way to go forward?

sluj · 04/05/2020 10:56

This is what DS Ziggurat son got back this morning about the charges and the option of getting his stuff during lockdown. What do you all think?

@NewModelArmyMayhem18

Re: the outstanding balance - you are correct in your PP - we opted to pay 3 equal terms but the first two terms were longer so there was a little bit of rent still to pay up to the date they vacated.

icanbewhatiwant · 04/05/2020 12:06

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 no none of them have made the payment yet. I've not looked at exactly how much Ds has paid each term. But I know they were different amounts. So do they not count how many weeks in each term and charge in advance? He has made a payment at the start of each term. I guess we just have to trust the figures are correct. At least we don't have to continue paying. I said further up thread that ds's gf had to stay in pablo fanque in Norwich as no accommodation left on campus. She has to keep paying still even though she is home. They are working on getting payments stopped.

It's ds's birthday today. So he's in a good mood for a change. He's got an online party later. I've bought him some beers he's not tried before. But I'm not invited to the party 🤣

NotSorry · 04/05/2020 13:11

If you look at the contract they got when they arrived on the first day, it gives you a nightly rate, you should be able to work it out from that. DS has got about £180 to pay which is roughly what I estimated from the contract. I think those on campus have been pretty fortunate in being let off most of the remaining payment.

icanbewhatiwant · 04/05/2020 13:52

Ok thanks guys. Sounds like it's been worked out properly by UEA accommodation.
