UEA (2019) dealing with the unexpected and on to 2nd Year

juicy0 · 30/03/2020 08:49

New thread for the parents of 2019 freshers. Thank you all for sticking around!
At the start of the year we never would have guessed the topics that are currently being discussed in this page but I'm grateful we still have each other to help navigate our way through this with our DC.
With the emptying of 1st year rooms seemingly on hold for many until the end of lockdown our thoughts will soon turn to 2nd year accommodation and whether term is likely to start as normal in September.

We are tier 4 in Suffolk from Boxing Day too. It was inevitable though. Cases are going up very quickly.

Ds doesn't know when he's going back yet. He will wait to see when everyone else plans to go back. As they live in private houses I can't see that they can't travel back especially as it's already a high tier. I can see it more of a problem if tier 4's want to go into tier 2.

Itscoldouthere · 24/12/2020 14:37

@icanbewhatiwant it's all so confusing isn't it, but sounds necessary, my friend who DS is staying with works in a hospital and says the numbers are really shooting up!
Canada has banned all flights from the UK for 2 week (which feels a bit knee-jerk).
I'm just worried that DS will be all alone in his house, which obviously isn't ideal. I'm wondering if lots of students will stay at home longer, maybe till this lockdown is over. DS says his exams aren't till the end of January so it sounds like there's no need to rush back and I presume it will all be online anyway and the library at UEA will be closed.

Finallyjoinedmnet · 24/12/2020 15:11

@Itscoldouthere My DD is planning to go back week beginning 11 Jan as per UEA’s suggestion. As much as she loves being back home she also enjoys her independence at Uni so will be keen to return. Hope your DS finds a happy solution.
Wishing everyone on here a very happy & restful alternative Christmas 🎄

Itscoldouthere · 24/12/2020 15:30

@Finallyjoinedmnet thanks for that, I'd forgotten that someone had kindly posted the UEA guidelines.
DS is meant to return on the 11th but I don't think he will want to stay at my friend's house till then.
My other DS has freaked me a bit saying there is talk of closing universities, but I haven't found any such reports.
Just when I think we are coping Covid seems to throw in another complication.
Anyway, I'm sure a solution will be found.
In the meantime it's almost Christmas and we intend to make the most of it.
Whilst out on a snowy dogwalk yesterday we passed a man on his knee proposing to his GF, ringbox in hand, it was so romantic in the snow, life is still going on, happily for many.
Happy Christmas everyone, I hope you all have good ones 🎄🎅 xxx

Merry Christmas to you all. Thank you all for your company this year, let's hope we have lots of joy to come next year x

NotSorry · 24/12/2020 19:26

I was going to ask what everyone is doing about them going back. DS2 wants to go back the first weekend in January. Tbh as normal service has resumed due to tier 4 (staying in bed till tea-time) he might as well go then.

I think we need a new thread for 2021 - we are at 982 messages.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 24/12/2020 20:33

Hi everyone. Merry Christmas everyone. Some of you may have had seasonal snow? Not here though. DS is planning on going back next week if he can. I think he intends on travelling with his cousin who is also at UEA.

This year is just getting stranger and stranger. It's a bit like Alice in Wonderland but without any of the nice bits!

Keep safe everyone.

icanbewhatiwant · 26/12/2020 11:23

Merry Christmas everyone for yesterday. I kept away from my phone for Christmas Day. I hope everyone had a good day and is keeping well.

icanbewhatiwant · 26/12/2020 11:25

Yes we need a new thread...I have no idea how to make one with a link.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/12/2020 11:40

If @juicy0 doesn't mind, I'll do one in a bit. We've still got space for another 15 posts which will probably see the weekend out.

I heard there was snow in East Anglia and Suffolk on Christmas Day?

We've had to deal with a cat crisis already this morning. They were chasing around the house at break-neck speed, one of them went into a bedroom and knocked a chair over which jammed the door closed.

icanbewhatiwant · 26/12/2020 13:02

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 I hope you managed to get to the cat. Cats are very entertaining though, even if it has caused you problems!

No snow here in north Suffolk yesterday. It was lovely and sunny...I think it was sunny most places wasn't it? Makes a change from the rain, we've had lots of flooding. Not our house but a lot of villages effected.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/12/2020 13:42

Yes, all well but not without considering calling the fire brigade to help rescue the mischief-maker (she is a naughty tortie for sure)! Her sister, when a kitten, managed to get behind an open drawer in the sideboard and I had to take the back off it to rescue her. They are cute but sometimes a PITA too! Much like the DC really!

Oh, that's a pity. I had high hopes that Mother Nature would reward us with a heavy blanket of festive snow to make up for the lack of socialising!

So sorry to hear about flooding. I watched a programme about it (possibly Panorama) a few weeks ago. How quickly the coastline in East Anglia is being eroded :-(. Climate change can't be helping the cause can it?

icanbewhatiwant · 26/12/2020 13:48

I don't know what caused the flooding...obviously it was too much rain, but not sure why it flooded where it never has before. We are not far from Diss. Lots of houses there flooded, some were saying they've lived there 60 years and never been flooded before. It must have been an awful end to an awful year for all concerned.

Glad the cat was rescued.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/12/2020 17:36

New thread.

juicy0 · 26/12/2020 21:09

Hi everyone, I hope you've all had a lovely Christmas. The rain in the past few days has caused terrible flooding in the local area with many villages underwater and homes flooded. The river Waveney burst its banks causing floods from Diss to Long Stratton in one direction and Diss to Bungay in the other. I feel so sorry for everyone involved, being flooded on top of everything else this year is just too much!
I hope all your D.C. are doing well and you're enjoying having them home! I'm fully expecting an announcement from the gov before 4th jan updating advice in return to school and uni in light of the increased case numbers attributed to the new strain. I can't imagine living with tier 4 restrictions indefinitely will encourage many students to rush back but I guess it depends on individual circumstances.
My DS in Y12 is so stressed, he's revising non stop for mocks due to take place from 4th jan which may or may not happen and May or may not be vital if the summer exams don't go ahead (which seems likely given more time out of classrooms to start 2021).
Thank you @NewModelArmyMayhem18 for the new thread
