Applying for uni in 2021...

Parsley65 · 20/02/2020 15:13

Thought I'd start the ball rolling on this one...

Dd wants to study psychology and we've been checking out dates of open days.

Her school still does AS levels. She's doing psychology, physics & business.

Please come and join us on the long and bumpy ride past revision and exams and on towards the much anticipated start of uni life in Autumn 2021.

This is several years old but I think it’s the same every year bar last year when it was CAGs.

GaribaldiGirl · 18/01/2021 21:44

@NotDonnaOrBlitzen

Crikey- that’s quite sobering.

Makes me think there will probably be a lot of A*s this year 😂

GaribaldiGirl · 18/01/2021 21:46

Whoops tagged the wrong person @NotDonna

NotDonna · 18/01/2021 21:55

It’s still me. ‘Blitzen’ added for Xmas. It’s fascinating reading how high ability disadvantage kids can end up at ‘lesser’ universities. Why oh why we don’t have a system where kids apply WITH grades in hand is beyond me!

LeiatheSchnauzer · 19/01/2021 07:22

@calculatorqueen, yes, as @NotDonna says, definitely have a look at the document, they ask lots of questions about what the preferred way of assessing would be. It is an interesting read as the detail is different to what I had construed from the media (and my own assumptions).

NotDonna · 19/01/2021 07:53

The students can complete it too. My DDs have.

KittyMcKitty · 19/01/2021 08:56

Are many people still waiting to hear from Manchester?

Ds applied mid November- had an email to say we’ve got your application but since then nothing (he’s applied for Phil & Pol).

Had another email yesterday saying your still on hold whilst we look for someone better (my paraphrasing but that’s how it feels).

Hope other dc are getting offers.

NotDonna · 19/01/2021 09:02

Still waiting on Bath for economics & applied end October. I think if she did get an offer now she’d not be too interested as she knows some offers have gone out (oxbridge candidates in fairness).

Sorry email was from Bristol. Manchester have heard nothing since November.

Hope your DD hears from Bath soon Donna ds is feeling the same way somewhat about Bristol. In contrast Liverpool offered within a day and have gone right up in his estimation and as I keep saying yiu can only keep 2 offers and he has 2 offers.

Would still be nice to hear from the other 3 courses!

NotDonna · 19/01/2021 09:27

Bristol, Manchester and where else are you waiting for? Remember, no news is good news!
I think DDs preference is Bristol (they offered quickly). If Bath had offered at the same time I think it’d be a trickier choice. Funny how the timing of offers affects their psyche.

KittyMcKitty · 19/01/2021 09:30

Bristol, Bristol & Manchester 😀

NotDonna · 19/01/2021 09:41

The wait is hard. He only needs two though. DD got a rejection so at least his other 3 are still possibilities. Sending flowers and unmumsnetty hugs in these crappy times! Flowers

MarchingFrogs · 19/01/2021 11:12

@calculatorqueen, which accommodation at Birmingham do you think would not suit your DS due to it being 'off campus'? If he means 'not on The Vale', the Pritchatts 'Village' accommodation is closer than some, if not all of the Vale blocks, as are most / all of the blocks comprising the Selly Oak 'Village'. The outlying ones (one of the 'Victorias'? ?now renamed, is about a 40 minute walk away) are just that, 'outliers'.

DS1 was in Jarratt Hall (Selly Oak Village), a few minutes from the Grange Rd gate and DD was in Battery Park, also Selly Oak, but next door to the retail park, but still only a c.15 minute walk in to lectures etc.

Thank you you’re right. And sorry your dd got a rejection. I know several students (with better grades then ds) who have had a couple of rejections and no offers.

Today’s just a bad day I think Smile

calculatorqueen · 19/01/2021 11:59

@MarchingFrogs We're very familiar with Birmingham Uni since both DH and I went there, living on the Vale and then Selly Oak/Selly Park although it has expanded greatly since then. It was the accommodation on the Pershore Road that we felt was too far out. From what I've read the accommodation that you end up with can be a bit of a lottery. Of course some students will be happy with this but I don't think being further out would suit DS. However it is a fantastic uni and we would be very proud if he followed in our footsteps.

beethecrackon24995 · 19/01/2021 19:31

does anyone know of anyone who has just received a Durham English offer? thanks

GaribaldiGirl · 19/01/2021 20:21

@beethecrackon24995 my DD applied last year with AAA plus an A* in her EPQ. They kept her waiting till 30th March before rejecting her. Not that I’m bitter or will childishly hold it against them for life and refuse to let her siblings even look at the place 😂😂
Hope your DC has more success and faster news.

beethecrackon24995 · 19/01/2021 20:32

thanks garibaldiGirl

Goodness with those grades Where did she go instead? Sorry if you've posted elsewhere, I don't take a lot of notice of usernames.

NotDonna · 19/01/2021 22:21

Durham’s loss garibaldi

ChimneyPot · 19/01/2021 23:40

@NotDonna DD got an offer from Bath for Economics and Politics a few days ago.

NotDonna · 19/01/2021 23:42

Well done to your DD!! Can I be nosey and ask predictions & their offer. Totally understand if you’d rather not say.

ChimneyPot · 19/01/2021 23:51

We are in Ireland not the U.K. Her predictions are 8 H1 which would be 4 A*
She had received an email a few weeks previously saying offers would be slow.

NotDonna · 20/01/2021 07:34

Ah no wonder she has an offer. Good for her!

calculatorqueen · 20/01/2021 08:43

@ChimneyPot congratulations to your DD. Where else has she applied to?

For those that have applied to Birmingham, DS received an invite to an offer holders day yesterday for economics via e mail.
