Applying for uni in 2021...

Parsley65 · 20/02/2020 15:13

Thought I'd start the ball rolling on this one...

Dd wants to study psychology and we've been checking out dates of open days.

Her school still does AS levels. She's doing psychology, physics & business.

Please come and join us on the long and bumpy ride past revision and exams and on towards the much anticipated start of uni life in Autumn 2021.

@redsquirrelfan she went to Edinburgh although actually she’s been doing it online from home since October since it was so awful there with Covid restrictions. She really loves the course.

@ChimneyPot well done to your DD. A clean sweep of perfect grades 😃

ChimneyPot · 20/01/2021 10:08

The perfect grades are only a prediction. Exams here have not been cancelled but the schools are remote teaching and there is a huge amount of uncertainty.
All of her U.K. offers are based on 5 or 6 grades not 8.

She applied to Oxford and got rejected.
Offers from Bath, Durham and Exeter for economics and politics.
Waiting on St Andrews.

She has already been accepted to Georgetown in Washington DC to study foreign relations. US acceptances are unconditional.

NotDonna · 20/01/2021 11:03

Oh wow! What amazing choices she has. Good on your DD.

Oldowl · 20/01/2021 14:12

Georgetown, Washington DC would be a great place to study politics (or would it be a Liberal Arts degree?)

What is her favourite at the moment?

ChimneyPot · 20/01/2021 15:26

Her favourite is definitely Georgetown to study politics.

It seemed such a long shot when she applied because she doesn’t have lots of excurricular activities and she goes to a regular state school.

I would have preferred her to study in the U.K. the US is so far away but if I was 18 I would definitely go to DC.

Oldowl · 20/01/2021 18:29

Well done to her. Is it eye-wateringly expensive?

It is a lovely part of Washington DC, near the Potomac river. We stayed in Foggy Bottom and walked through Georgetown. It was very nice!

Frodont · 20/01/2021 20:39

Hi all, anyone heard from Edinburgh? Dd had a message from Edinburgh saying they didn't have enough info to allocate her a fee status?? She filled in the necessary forms but hasn't heard anything.

Nothkng from st Andrews either but they said they wouldn't be offering until after the deadline.

pepperaunt · 20/01/2021 20:47

@Frodont DD got an offer from Edinburgh (Physics) late last week, contingent on her not applying as Scottish. No request for further information yet.

ChimneyPot · 20/01/2021 21:32

Yes US universities are very expensive but the good ones have very generous financial aid. DD despite never having lived in the US is a US citizen through my father so qualifies for aid.

Sorry to derail the discussion.

NotDonna · 21/01/2021 08:36

Oh no not derailing at all ChimneyPot how incredibly exciting for her! I must admit as an 18 year old I’d be off to Washington too but as a mother... eek!
Thanks for the heads up re Birmingham offer holder calculator. DD hadn’t mentioned it but she’s apparently booked on.

redsquirrelfan · 21/01/2021 10:16

I wish my son would get off his proverbial and book his offer holder days.

Charitably I guess he's not keen on yet more video calls.

However, I do wonder whether he actually wants to go to uni. Not sure what he thinks he's going to do instead though. 24 hour xboxing while being kept by his dad and me is not an option!

NotDonna · 21/01/2021 11:03

What course has he applied for squirrel? Dyou think he’s gone off the course or the idea of university? It’s made more difficult for them as it’s hard to know what the university/covid situation will be like. More online learning or proper lectures. If he’s really not fancying uni has he thought about an apprenticeship? Ucas has a section on them. Guess it depends what his career ambitions are though.

loveyouradvice · 21/01/2021 17:04

Okay... going to ask a really dumb question and hoping someone will pop up with the easy answer... what's the link for looking up uni requirements for different subjects? Thanks!

DahliaMacNamara · 21/01/2021 17:10

Different universities want different things. There's no one easy answer, but if you say what you're looking for, somebody here is sure to have a good idea.

NotDonna · 21/01/2021 17:12

The university website will have a link to undergrad courses by subject. Is your DC applying to attend uni this September?

loveyouradvice · 21/01/2021 17:15

And another one ... just been on WhatUni which someone said had grade profiles of students actually studying specific subjects? I couldn't spot these but would be very useful. They just give the grades asked for as far as I can see

Has anyone found these?

NotDonna · 21/01/2021 17:19

@loveyouradvice you may find this link useful
www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/courses

NotDonna · 21/01/2021 17:24

I can never remember exactly which is which but both ‘what uni’ and ‘complete uni guide’ have good info. But be sure to check the uni websites for all course requirements as some ask for certain GCSEs too. But those two sites are good starting points. I’m just hoping your DC is looking for 2022 entry as they’ve only 8 days to get their application in and I’m amazed a school hasn’t been on their case before now. There’s a 2022 uni thread btw.

mykitchenruler · 21/01/2021 17:37

Earlier results provides no benefit to Scottish students at Scottish universities as the number of places is capped. Scottish universities often have clearing places for RUK students but not Scottish ones.

Any Scottish students with offers from Glasgow?

MarchingFrogs · 21/01/2021 18:32

@loveyouradvice, I thought the site which showed what others doing the same A levels had studied at university was the one formerly called (?)which?uni, but although that dpes have an 'A level explorer' tool, it only gives suggestions:
www.theuniguide.co.uk/exploratory-widgets/a-level-explorer

sacu-student.com/?page_id=5203 seems to do what I thought the which? site did, but it's definitely not the one I was thinking of, as it requires registration, which the other one didn't. Might be useful, though?

GaribaldiGirl · 21/01/2021 18:42

@redsquirrelfan your post made me laugh. My son is similar. He loves his food though so today I said I’d make his (very nice) lunch when he’d booked the Exeter offer day. It worked!

Applepieco · 22/01/2021 12:53

DS finally received an offer from Durham this morning (History). Interestingly, although he was originally torn between Durham & Bristol, with Exeter as insurance, all this long waiting period for Durham has done, is confirm his desire for Bristol!

calculatorqueen · 22/01/2021 13:01

@Applepieco Congratulations to your DS on his offer. He must have impressed them because I read on Facebook that some had been offered Anthropology instead!

Applepieco · 22/01/2021 13:07

Gosh - Don’t think DS would have been too impressed with that. I have heard that Durham do that if they think your stats are not strong enough for your chosen course. A friend of his applied for Maths and has received an offer for Computer science, but will be turning it down as he is holding an offer for Maths from Oxford! It’s all a bit random.

PenguinIce · 23/01/2021 12:23

Hi, just joining in. The whole Uni Application is all new to me as neither my dh or I went to Uni. My ds is planning on Exeter Uni and just wondering if anyone had any thought on accommodation there? Have had a quick look at the price (eek!) but don’t know the area very well so was looking for opinions on best value for money and also if there are any to avoid? Thanks!
