Someone's going to appear and post something like "I cant beleive u r getting upset. There 18 years old."

TBH I wasn't upset, just drained.
I don't dissolve into tears easily. We nearly lost DD when she was a few weeks old, then she was under investigation for bone cancer at 11. I cried then. Going to university is nothing in comparison.

So, we both felt emotionally drained the day we dropped her off, but not in the least bit sad. She is only a 2 hour drive away, plus we have family in the North East that we visit often so we will be passing by regularly.

I feel for those parents who have travelled from Dubai, Abu Dhabi etc. That must be a wrench.

Benjispruce · 29/09/2019 14:18

Oh dear typo card city! I meant I had visions of my DD as a 3 /4 year old playing in the garden. Her nursery pictures still decorate the walls of the playhouse/shed! If anyone plays that damn ABBA song I’ll drown!

Benjispruce · 29/09/2019 14:22

Oh I didn’t dissolve into tears, just a few tears, big gulps and hugs. DD was ok, full of adrenaline and about to go down to the JCR with the others on her floor. That must put things in perspective though Gin. I am so excited for her and feel that she’s safe. Yes I feel drained too . Last weekend was her birthday so lots on and this weekend full on so will be nice to have a bit of new normality.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/09/2019 14:23

I was definitely more excited than upset. Definitely no tears here.

But it had an 'end of an era's vibe to it that could have made me sentimental if we weren't to busy with all the arrangements.

Sunshineboo · 29/09/2019 14:29

Please encourage your kids not to sort out accommodation for next year now. Many friendship groups will change by Christmas and, more importantly, student landlords often charge more now. Please encourage them to talk to student services and leave it until at least November

simbobs · 29/09/2019 14:32

I'm still trying to work out what the new normal is.
What am I for?

Witchend · 29/09/2019 14:34

I haven't really been sobbing, just tears in my eyes, which really is unlike me.

Dh is at York now having lunch. A very long way to go.

In his typical way he updated me with traffic and weather. I wanted to know how dd was and about her room etc. Another men eh? Grin

student landlords often charge more now that's worth knowing. I'd have expected if anything it to be cheaper now, and prices going up as less available through the year.

simbobs · 29/09/2019 14:36

@Witchend, Another men eh? Yep! That's why I insisted on going this time.

Benjispruce · 29/09/2019 14:37

Terrible weather on A1 now queuing.
There was a lad on DD’s floor who said he was from India, lived in Russia but had been boarding in England. Made our M1/A1 trip seem trivial.

bigTillyMint · 29/09/2019 14:44

@Sunshineboo, in DDs and DGodDs experience, it was November before they started making plans and both found houses in Jan. It has worked out really well for them, but I agree, it is so soon.

@Benjispruce, we must be ahead of you!

Ginfordinner · 29/09/2019 14:51

We are in Yorkshire and it has been a constant deluge all day here.

Flyingarcher · 29/09/2019 14:55

Well, he is stuffed full of food and he is just off to do his shift at the supermarket and then we will drop him down tonight, late, with a bag of food so he eats properly. He has had quite a few classes and has heavy duty homework to do before Tuesday so I just want to make sure he eats! He seems to love it though and is obviously out and about having a great social life.

Accommodation still haven't given him a chair or a bedside table and the DSA people didn't turn up with the equipment so he has got to go do some more adulting next week to sort it out.

Piggywaspushed · 29/09/2019 15:16

DS gets no phone signal at his accommodation which is very frustrating. he has now sorted his internet banking out so now he will have to phone Tesco Mobile in case they can help. The adult world is all a bit much.

Benjispruce · 29/09/2019 15:24

DD has just sent me a photo of her with Henry from GBBO! Grin

Benjispruce · 29/09/2019 15:32

Not sure what he made of her cake but she’s thrilled she talked to him. Smile

bigTillyMint · 29/09/2019 15:33

Lol Benjispruce, you will have to be my informant - nowt from DS Grin

Mustbetimeforachange · 29/09/2019 15:37

Piggy that's poor about no mobile signal. Tesco uses O2 so should be pretty good coverage

bigTillyMint · 29/09/2019 15:39

@Piggywaspushed, DD had a problem in her house last year, more to do with the router not being strong enough? Could that be it?

FrameyMcFrame · 29/09/2019 15:47

Dd has moved in.
She's having a great time so far.., I'm happy and relieved. Been getting updates all last night and today, she's made friends with her flatmates and they went to freshers events... there was lots of drinking. Seems like a nice crowd!

Sorry butI did have some tears once I made it to the car. If that makes me a backpack parent then GREAT!!!

I think its fair enough to feel emotional, we have achieved what we set out to do and it hasn't been easy!!
I feel Like I need to sleep for a year. But unfortunately got to get back to normal, work and parenting DS
Good luck to all who are doing today.

Ginfordinner · 29/09/2019 15:48

I feel Like I need to sleep for a year.

That's how we felt. when we got back to the house we both crashed in front of the TV.

bigTillyMint · 29/09/2019 16:00

Yes I feel a bit drained too.
But plenty of time for relaxing as DH drives home - 6hours Hmm

FrameyMcFrame · 29/09/2019 16:03

I was so glad DH was able to drive home!

Looking around yesterday there were lots of weary parents.

Serin · 29/09/2019 16:20

Witchend, your post of 14.04 almost made me cry it resonated so much.
You say beautiful things Flowers

MrKlaw · 29/09/2019 16:23

@Piggywaspushed if can’t fix the signal, consider a network like EE/Vodafone that support WiFi calling
