Not sure there are staff as such other than a porter on the door , bar staff and the odd cleaner . Why would there be .
Lol re drug doggy .

Benjispruce · 06/10/2019 18:18

Why would there be? I’m thinking that the students are not quite used to independent living and college still feels like school where if something gets out of hand, staff will step in.

ifonly4 · 06/10/2019 18:30

DD phoned at 11pm last night to say hello, forgetting that I go to bed early Sat night as I start work early Sun morning[hmm. Asked her if she was in the pub as I could hear lots of background noise and she's been there a few times with a large group of 18 she's in with. Apparently lots of them were in her room, along with her new roommate (transferred rooms this week). She assured me her new roommate didn't mind the visitors!!

Trewser · 06/10/2019 18:43

Dd has a cleaner who she's befriended. No other staff. They are on their own!

Benjispruce · 06/10/2019 18:47

Eek!Confused

HotGingerPudding2 · 06/10/2019 18:53

Indeed Benjispruce I would have thought the requirement is self evident. Not quite sure why the use of sniffer dogs is a cause for “lol”.

My daughter’s halls has a large Wardennial staff comprising a Warden and team of Assistant Wardens who are Phd students in the main. They perform a first line pastoral role and can refer students to other university support services. They are also the first contact point in the event of an emergency. They are separate from residential services.

MrKlaw · 06/10/2019 19:12

Heh - DS totally needed a cheese grater immediately for cooking tuna pasta bake. Maybe he’ll listen to his parents occasionally :p

bigTillyMint · 06/10/2019 19:15

@HotGingerPudding2, that sounds good re the Pastoral support. Which is very sadlyblacking in many unis.

Benjispruce · 06/10/2019 19:23

@MrKlaw I’m so pleased. We had the same with DD when she needed safety pins for her toga. I smugly pointed out that there were some in the sewing kit that I’d packed. The same sewing kit she had scoffed at when packing. Wink

Piggywaspushed · 06/10/2019 20:09

It has just taken about an hour of moral support via WhatsApp and texting but DS has bought train tickets to come home next Friday. Now he just has to manage to find the station and to do the actual train journey, changing trains twice. I can't see how this could possibly go wrong...

Mustbetimeforachange · 06/10/2019 20:11

I feel your pain, piggy, but once he's done it...

justasking111 · 06/10/2019 20:14

Mine is doing the train thing next weekend. He will not pay the extra money to meet up with friends in Manchester so they can all come home together. Tight bugger, so he will arrive about midnight which means me staying up to collect him. I will be a basked case.

Benjispruce · 06/10/2019 20:15

Is it his first time on a train alone @Piggywaspushed?
DD has been getting trains to gigs since she was 16. I’m realising how independent and capable she is of late. She was in Amsterdam with a friend in September when the friend ran out of funds and they decided to come home early. She reorganised the flights online, cancelled their hostel that night and went straight to the airport from a club at 4am!Grin

Benjispruce · 06/10/2019 20:17

@justasking111 he can get a cab can’t he?
Time to remove your backpacks people!!!

Piggywaspushed · 06/10/2019 20:21

Yes, first time alone. A lot if this independence thing arises from where you live but also circle of friends. Kids I teach go into London, Brighton a fair amount and to the exciting lights of Luton. But they live in a town with a direct train. DS can't get to that town by public transport. He has been on a train lots of times but never without DH

Benjispruce · 06/10/2019 20:24

He’ll be just fine.Wink

MarchingFrogs · 06/10/2019 20:38

DD is coming back from Birmingham next Saturday, at least as far as London to meet up.with some friends. And to cadge a late lunch off us, if we would like to traipse up to Euston to meet her (please)?

minesawine · 06/10/2019 20:41

Just booked a train home for my DS, Nottingham to London for 25th October, roughly half way between start of term and xmas break. I cant wait and have booked the day off to cook his favourite meals, disappointed when he said he will be out catching up with his mates, but happy with 2 days in his own bed. Wont see him again until December so it will be such a treat

Alicatz66 · 06/10/2019 20:44

I think they will all surprise you !! My DS managed a flight to Boston .. changing at Dublin when he was 17 because his half sister paid for him to visit her... he said as he was on his own he paid a lot more attention to what he was doing ... and also that I'm the only thing that makes him stressy !! ..

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/10/2019 20:44

Student shenanigans....

Mustbetimeforachange · 06/10/2019 20:45

Mine doesn't seem to have any plans to come home, although I'm sure that will change!

Ragwort · 06/10/2019 20:55

Our DS is coming home in a couple of weeks but made it clear he wanted use of my car and would be staying with his girlfriend’s family Shock, he did say he would join us for Sunday lunch ....

bigTillyMint · 06/10/2019 20:57

We are stopping by to see DS at half-term as part of our hols. It'll only have been 3 weeks, but it'll be good to see him! Then 7 weeks till he comes home for xmas!Shock

Ragwort · 06/10/2019 20:58

That takes me back to my uni days DrMadeline, we used to nick road signs Blush.

MrKlaw · 06/10/2019 21:55

Mine will probably come back for the weekend during Reading week (whenever that is) when the accommodation will be quiet with people spending the week at home (well those doing humanities/heavy reading courses)
