I booked a delivery slot a few weeks ahead and it only cost 50p. I was able to book a slot that would normally be school pick up time (3-4pm) so it's unpopular and therefore cheap. DS doesn't have any classes on a Wednesday, but as they are sharing, then as long as one of the 5 are in to accept the delivery and put it away then that will be fine. Their nearest shop is about 10-15 walk which is fine, but it's just not a great shop. Probably better for people who can cook, in that the raw meat and veg looked fine, it just didn't have a great selection of convenience food or stuff that DC is more familiar with.

Ginfordinner · 15/09/2019 22:18

Wow. A lot of updates since I last looked.
Commiserations to your DD DrMadelineMaxwell
Great news Benjispruce
I can see DD struggling with all the late night revelry as well Piggywaspushed. She is finding that she can't drink very much without being sick, and having CFS means that she really struggles with very late nights.

Re cooking - DD was brought up from being a baby on a TV diet of cookery programmes. I always used to have Saturday Kitchen on from when she was tiny. She watches a lot of YouTube cookery videos and loads on Facebook. I hope she isn't sharing a flat with Neanderthals who will be rude about her not eating meat.

His room is on the 7th floor with broken lift. Sun was shining straight in, window could only be opened for about 1 cm, so it was absolutely boiling in there. Was pouring down with sweat.... DH though it was a health hazard

It sounds like it! Could he order some black out blinds in the mean time, you know the sort that you just clip to the window? Poor boy, thank goodness we're going into A/W. Ds has black out curtains, I kind of though that would be standard in student accommodation. Hope he can sort something out. And SEVEN floors with no lift?Shock

Benji phew! What a relief!

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2019 22:28

Eleanor, hope your DD is OK.

I think a lot of young uns don't know what uni 'means'. We go on about the course and studying, and entering adulthood and then they turn up and hear about parties and drinking. I think, unless you have led a certain teen lifestyle it can be a conflictual experience.

Witchend · 15/09/2019 22:30

@Benjispruce
Hurrah! So pleased for you both.

Shimy · 15/09/2019 22:33

Fantastic news @Benjispruce.

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 22:43

Thanks all. Smile

Whilst I know when the time comes I am going to miss DS1 but this has been the longest summer ever. Still nearly two more weeks to go, he is extremely bored at MacDonald’s all his mates are enjoying freshers or about to start lessons tomorrow. He just feels in limbo waiting, we have had every conversation going about university, he’s been packed for about two weeks. The waiting is definitely increasing his nerves. Especially messages from people who assume he is already started.

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 22:47

I know Property still 2 weeks here too. DD is ready to go, her job is finished as they were having a refit, so not an awful lot to do with most friends at uni o going next weekend. Perhaps she’ll tidy her room Hmm

Propertyfaux · 15/09/2019 22:50

tidying the room will be the last minute washing load. Not sure what I will find in there when he leaves

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 22:51

Oh just to update MrKlaw DD got her £100 from HSBC today. Still awaiting PIN.
Good timing after her shopping spree today.

property I know the feeling. DH declared a mug amnesty last night. I tried not to count but it took her 2 trips.

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 22:54

I’m sure there is Cheese, I would think it would be a requirement.

Propertyfaux · 15/09/2019 23:01

I think university is quite a supportive place for trans, I am worried about women’s right but am very supportive of my DCs friends who are trans. It must be hard to hear the criticisms but the younger generation do seem to be trying to be inclusive as possible and your child will find their tribe and will hopefully be a protective shield.

DS1 dropped at Bournemouth today, brand new accommodation all very lovely.
Can’t believe how much accommodation there is, I hadn’t realised Bournemouth University was that big, my DS is at the Arts University which is quite small.
I had forgotten how lovely Bournemouth is, it was looking great in the sunshine.
I’m so happy for DS, I think he’s going to have a great time, I even managed to not cry.
I wasn’t as impressed with the terrible traffic or the 5 hours (instead of 3) it took to get home!!

Propertyfaux · 15/09/2019 23:24

University should be good they will have an established lgbt support groups with their own society.

Propertyfaux · 15/09/2019 23:27

Bournemouth is lovely and not far from bigger cities. The traffic isn’t too bad normally outside of summer.

Itscoldouthere · 15/09/2019 23:34

I think the traffic was due to the number of students being dropped off and of course the sunshine.
I went to uni in Bournemouth but it was a long time ago and I’d forgotten how nice it was.
DS halls have a sky loung and outside terrace on the 16th floor with amazing sea views, they are so lucky.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/09/2019 06:17

Great news for your DD @Benjispruce

What a PITA for your DS @hopelesschildren - climbing up seven floors with lots of kit would be awful. And nothing worse than not being able to fling open a window (always an issue I find with Travelodges) - can't stand having no fresh air.

Online food orders do seem like a good way to go for those living far away/steep incline walk from decent supermarkets.

@Itscoldouthere, your DS's room sounds fab - and does the sky lounge!

Late night revelry will take a bit of getting used to for some, DS included. He only every stays up into the wee small hours to watch NFL (but that's from the comfort of his bed).

@EleanorReally hope your DD feels more positive today - presumably she'll have some lectures/seminars etc...to do which will focus her?

@Blametheparents, glad to hear your DS is on the mend, albeit slowly. Hopefully he will just take it easy for the first few days he's at university (does he go this coming weekend?) - although easier said than done with it being freshers' week!

OP posts:
EleanorReally · 16/09/2019 06:22

Thank you.
DD was disappointed that lectures were starting at the same week as freshers.
but good idea that it will focus her.
it is not all fun fun fun
and reading this page has given me an idea about visiting her rather than her popping home for a weekend

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/09/2019 06:39

Yes, that's why DS didn't opt for the full week's freshers' wristband - he couldn't see how he would do the learning/admin stuff if he'd been partying all night too for a whole week. He is generally early to bed. Of course all that might change once he arrives!

We plan to visit DS at some point midway through this first term.

Bulletin from my now empty nest......trouble free drop off, a bit of a tearful farewell but DD has dived straight in with her flatmates (who she has been “chatting” with for a while now - massive benefit of social media). She says it hasn’t sunk in yet that this isn’t just a temporary stay, I predict some homesickness to come. This week brings various induction talks and general admin plus a few freshers events before lectures start next week

I will in the meantime try to enjoy the sound of silence........😉

Benjispruce · 16/09/2019 07:11

Wow, how cool is a sky lounge with sea view at Bournemouth ? Lucky lot.
