The backpack naysayers would have a fit at my parenting!! But if it weren't for you he would never have got there and it's only by being there that he will learn independence. You are the mummy bird literally pushing her fledgling out of the nest - it's actually the most admirable form of parenting because in many ways it's the hardest thing to do.

Mine has had his interview, they will let him know. He is a a yeah, no, texter so no idea how things are going. His DB phoned him last night I got more out of him today.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 15/09/2019 20:15

Ds can't cook apart from beans, eggs every which way and toasty sandwiches, bacon and sauages etc. He'll have to learn from YouTube as I'm a bloody brilliant cook and he won't let me show him the basics at all. More fool him Hmm

EleanorReally · 15/09/2019 20:25

we dropped off, and came back today with food and were met with tears and a request to be taken home Sad
she was over tired, had built it up too much and was let down.
and we left stuff at home by mistake.
speaking to her tonight however and she was much happier, thank goodness Smile

I remember hauling groceries from that Bath Sainsbury's to my various rooms and houses in Bath. If only delivery had been available then! We sometimes shared a taxi if a few of us needed groceries.

drsausage · 15/09/2019 20:34

DH just sent me photos of DD's room with her stuff mostly unpacked. I see she STILL hasn't put her laundry away Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/09/2019 20:36

I'm doing a on-line delivery order for DS2 (Controlling mother alert!!) I offered as the local supermarket is a bit shit and I already have an account with Sainsburys. The delivery is costing 50p. He is consulting with his flat mates and getting a list to me (I filled the basket with stuff to hold the slot but will change the order when I get the list). I'll do an order every few weeks for the next couple of months and then get him to set up his own account. I suggested that they order anything heavy/bulky and anything that the local shop doesn't have and then they just need to pop out for milk and bread and fresh stuff. They seem to be working pretty well together though for a group of 4 blokes and a woman. 2 of them are still 17, 2 are only just 18 and I think the woman is maybe 19.

FrameyMcFrame · 15/09/2019 20:38

Jeez the backpack thread Confused

FrameyMcFrame · 15/09/2019 20:39

Piggy, glad to hear all was good withDS!!
Good luck to all DC starting this weekend.

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2019 20:52

I don't think we are out of the woods yet but we'll see. I think he will find Freshers Week tough . I expect it will be noisy and he may feel left out. They are all heading out to the party that is on tonight.

I am not sure he could get his head round things that end at 3.30 am. Hopefully, he'll manage to see it's all marketing.

I did look at his fresher's week leaflet and the drinks are outrageously cheap : I thought all of that had been ended but obviously not!

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2019 20:54

I mean this is the point really, isn't it wax ? DS was 18 less than a month ago. Adult is not really a suitable description for him yet. Someone on the other thread called them nascent adults (might even have been you!) and that seems bang on.

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 20:59

DD has had her twin room swapped for a private room!!!GrinGrinGrin Oh I can’t tell you the relief! Thanks for all the finger crossing, it worked and I will sleep tonight!

bigTillyMint · 15/09/2019 21:03

@Benjispruce yay!!! That's great news - must have been all our finger crossing that did it! I bet she's made up Smile

drsausage · 15/09/2019 21:03

Woohoo Benji!

hopelesschildren · 15/09/2019 21:05

Just come back from dropping off ds. Initially quite keen to move in, but after he saw his room, I think he was less happy. His room is on the 7th floor with broken lift. Sun was shining straight in, window could only be opened for about 1 cm, so it was absolutely boiling in there. Was pouring down with sweat.... DH though it was a health hazard.

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 21:07

Yes yes yes I know! She had an email at 1pm but only just read it as she’s been out shopping all day.

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/09/2019 21:07

It wasn't me piggy but I agree. DS2 does seem to be doing okay, but I don't think I need to stop supporting and helping him now that he's been 18 for 4 weeks. If he doesn't need or want me then I'm sure he'll tell me or ignore me. Given that his maximum loan barely covers his rent, DH and I are sacrificing quite a lot to enable him and his brother to go to Uni and hopefully not come out too much in debt. DHs entire salary is going on uni room rental or travel and an allowance for food and we'll have this for another 4 years yet (DS1 is on year 2 of a 5 year course and DS2 just started a 4 year course). We hope that they'll be able to contribute a bit more themselves as time goes on though and we've said that we can only do it if we remain in a strong financial position.

Neither DH and I or them have any likelihood of any inheritance or any rich relatives so it's pretty much down to us and as both DH and I were brought up in poverty, we'd like better for our DC. If that's a crime then lock me up now.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/09/2019 21:09

Hooray Benj. Fab news.

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2019 21:19

Great news benji

Not such good news hopeless. Apparently, DS's halls are popular because the windows open wide. We have these limiters at school and it is sweltering. Maybe a trip to Argos for a few fans?

The lift will have to be fixed , surely?

Excellent post wax .

Decorhate · 15/09/2019 21:21

@Benjispruce Fantastic news!
@Atreus Yes delivery would probably be the way to go ultimately. Older dd claims there is no need to cook during Freshers Week due to the amount of free pizza available!

GinandManic · 15/09/2019 21:50

Sounds a bit like my daughter's room hopelesschildren. Which halls is tour son in.

Luckily my daughter packed a small fan that plugs into her laptop which might help.

MrKlaw · 15/09/2019 21:53

Delivery feels like a waste of money but if a flat groups together that’s not so bad

Decorhate · 15/09/2019 21:59

Not a waste of money if it costs less than the bus or taxi!

MrKlaw · 15/09/2019 22:01

DW said he can just walk :) but obv will check distances. If they’re just buying for themselves the bags shouldn’t be too heavy?

Jo4Laurie · 15/09/2019 22:07

@LillianGish how true! And it feels very hard just now! Thank goodness for the support on this forum.
