Ha @JennyWreny!!! They could be as identifying an item in our DC's kit as the MN scarf is to us!

How do you find out about the Ikea student discount? I can't see anything on either of the store sites nearish to us, but I might not be looking in the right place.

@simbobs here is the info. You might need to cross reference with your 'local' IKEA website too.

Thank you. If you go into the T&C it shows the participating stores, which seems to be pretty much all of them. Free meatballs..? Got to be worth a trip. I'm sure I can make up the difference with candles and "stuff". Now to get him on the move.

Doesn't seem to include the Wembley store

An exciting morning in our household - dd passed her driving test then dropped her phone down the stairs texting her friends and rendered it unusable... Mixed emotions for her today!!

She is in the process of choosing modules for her course and we have done a big Asda homeware shop so has a lot of what she needs - our nearest IKEA is 2 hours away so what we'd save in equipment we would spend in fuel. We will go to the Cardiff IKEA on moving in day to get anything we have missed.

Well done to your DD @PhannyMcNee but a total PITA that she ruined her phone!

DS doesn't see the point adding his current halifax account to SFE for maintenance loan because he'd only have to change it to HSBC if they ever pull their finger out and open his student account.

It takes 5 minutes to type some details in! How about having an account ready so your maintenance loan isn't delayed?? We're covering accommodation but still - get your ass in gear

DS denies all knowledge of 'choosing modules', but given that there is a different reading list for different modules, and the books cost a bomb, he has conceded that it would be as well to find out.

Put this together for DS. He’d rather this than a biscuit jar!

I'm liking the look of that jar of goodies @blametheparents.

DS doesn't seem to have a reading list for geography - is that likely?

I think some of our DC's reluctance to do some of these admin tasks is because it makes the whole 'going off to university' gig that bit more real.

Apparantly Bath doesn't have pre-reading lists which is a relief and they don't have timetables available until end of next week. So we haven't missed them.

I expect you'll get reading lists first week of term. DS has a few Maths department sessions during freshers week which will be admin and setup like that I expect.

@blametheparents nice jar - although DS would prefer he had one filled with those lindor round chocs (expensive tastes).

Also I've added the Bath campus Amazon locker to my amazon address book ready for emergency supplies (although they have a post room for regular incoming parcels but locker is convenient too)

No all courses have reading lists. It all seems to be coming together too quickly for my ds, I think, suddenly too real. I'm not sure how much he really wants to go now. Part of the problem is that a lot of his really good friends will still be here, as they are 1 yr behind him at 6th Form College - or only just starting in the case of his gf, so he is going to have to meet people he really likes very early on to stop him coming home weekends. His bf is going to the same uni so hopefully that will help.

I have seen posters from 'not in the UK' so I - if I may - will join, too.
DD has her place, her campus card and is sitting here trying to get to grips with the online time tabeling / lecture choosing system. She's got ADHD so patience is not one of her virtues.
I'll try and steer her to the students' help desk, where she'll get explantions from 'real people' ...

Well done Benji's dd
Hope she gets a hat trick!
Dd's further maths went up 2 marks on one paper so 2 marks is more than possible.

You're most welcome @Prokupatuscrackedatus, We're all in the same boat aren't we? The whole register in advance made possible by 21st Century technology just seems to make for more stress at the home end. I cannot remember so much to do ahead of going off to university many moons ago. It's navigating the different websites/portals too - not as straightforward or as intuitive as one might think.

DS cooked a full roast with his dad. His dad is convinced that the flat sharers will never take it in turn to cook a meal which would be cheaper, we shall see.

He is not taking a clothes airer says it will make his room damp. I said well you can always buy things like rugs, etc. when you get there and need extra stuff.

Nice to see other “not in the UK” posters too. But as a PP said it doesn’t matter where you are it’s the same stress everywhere.
Saw two rooms today and 5 tomorrow. It’s a very busy university city but I’m still shocked at what shitty rooms people let out. And a bathroom for 5 people that hardly had space to turn round in. Oh it’s so frustrating but I made it better by eating good Indian food that you can’t get where we live

Oh yes, when I went (more than 30 years ago) it was all on paper or in person.
But then - I can fill out the student loan/grant forms online now, so they won't look as if my cat has filled them in.

@justasking111, I was convinced the same when DD moved into her 2nd year shared house with the 3 boys and 2 girls she was in her halls flat with. This was the halls party flat....

They did a cooking and washing up rota and ate together all last year, and are planning to do the same this year Shock so it can happen, even in the most unlikely circumstances Grin

And it is so much cheaper, plus they eat nice meals as they only have to cook once a week.

Report
Mustbetimeforachange · 05/09/2019 20:28

Neither of mine have shared cooking, which I think is a shame. Occasional joint meals but nothing regular. We did it & it was great. The trouble is these days there are a lot more convenience foods & people are in their rooms watching Netflix.
